TwitterWith a market capitalization of approximately 54 billion euros as of the end of Februrary 2023, the largest company on the Milan Stock Exchange was Enel, the world’s second largest electricity company. This is followed by Stellantis, with a market capitalization of over 53 billion euros. Italy’s most recognizable companies Italy is home to some of the most recognizable brands in the world. One of the largest companies on the Milan Stock Exchange is the luxury carmaker Ferrari – although high share price is perhaps based more on their brand identity than their underlying sales, given Ferrari’s global revenue is many times lower than the revenue of the world’s largest car manufacturers. Also among Italy’s largest companies is drinks manufacturer Campari. Aside from their titular liqueur, Campari’s brands also include well-known alcoholic drinks like Frangelico, Grand Marnier and Wild Turkey. The Milan Stock Exchange Otherwise known as the Borsa Italiana, the Milan Stock Exchange was recently acquired by Euronext, who are the fourth largest stock exchange operator in the world. Taken alone, the listed companies on the Borsa Italiana have a total market capitalization of around 607.3 billion euros. Two main markets comprise the Borsa Italiana:
the Mercato Telematico Azionario (MTA), which is the segment for mid- and large-size companies; and the AIM Italia, which was established in 2009 to cater for high growth small and medium enterprises needing more flexibility around the reporting and governance requirements.

This dataset provides a comprehensive and clean historical view of the Italian stock market, specifically focusing on the companies within the FTSE MIB and FTSE Italia Mid Cap indices. It was created as the foundational asset for a quantitative finance project aimed at developing and backtesting factor-based investment strategies. The data has undergone a rigorous quality assurance process to remove outliers and logical inconsistencies.
The dataset is composed of three separate CSV files, linked by security_id and date:
1. securities_master.csv
The master file containing the list of all securities in the investment universe.
* id: Unique integer identifier for each security (Primary Key).
* ticker: The unique stock ticker (e.g., ENI.MI).
* company_name: The full name of the company.
* sector: The business sector of the company.
* index_name: The index the stock belongs to (FTSE MIB or FTSE Mid Cap).
2. daily_prices.csv
Contains the full daily price history for each security since 2002-01-01.
* id: Unique integer identifier for the price record.
* security_id: Foreign Key linking to the id in securities_master.
* price_date: The trading date in YYYY-MM-DD format.
* open, high, low, close: Standard OHLC prices, adjusted for dividends and splits.
* volume: The number of shares traded.
3. macro_data.csv
Provides the macroeconomic context with daily frequency (using forward-fill for lower frequency data).
* data_date: The date in YYYY-MM-DD format.
* [Other columns]: Contains various indicators like vix_close, btp_10y_yield, btp_bund_spread, eu_gdp_growth, it_inflation_rate, etc.
The data was collected programmatically using Python libraries (yfinance, pandas-datareader) from trusted sources (Yahoo Finance, FRED). A multi-step data cleaning and validation process was applied to ensure quality and consistency.
The primary challenge for this dataset is to build a portfolio selection model that can consistently outperform the FTSE MIB index on a risk-adjusted basis. What factors (Momentum, Volatility, Macro) are most predictive for the Italian market?

A dataset that tracks the daily trend of over 400 stocks in the Italian stock market.
The stocks span a diverse range of industries and super-sectors, as per the industry classification benchmark (ICB).
Any stock is tracked minute by minute from market opening time (09:00 am) to closing time (06:00 pm) on workdays.
The tracking consists of the following four features: ask price, ask size, bid price and bid size.
The aim of the dataset is to train models predicting the optimal buying and selling points of any stock, which will require the definition of models robust to the diverse forms of concept drift often present in such volatile time series.
The AZP v1 dataset was presented during our talk on adversarial training and validation at ODSC west 2023.
For more information on the dataset and how we have used it for stock market forecasting see the attached presentation.
