    Tempe is among Arizona's most educated cities, lending to a creative, smart atmosphere. With more than a dozen colleges, trade schools, and universities, about 40 percent of our residents over the age of 25 have Bachelor's degrees or higher. Having such an educated and accessible workforce is a driving factor in attracting and growing jobs for residents in the region.The City of Tempe is a member of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC), and with the membership, staff tracks collaborative efforts to recruit business prospects and locations. The Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC) is a performance-driven, public-private partnership. GPEC partners with the City of Tempe, Maricopa County, 22 other communities, and more than 170 private-sector investors to promote the region’s competitive position and attract quality jobs that enable strategic economic growth and provide increased tax revenue for Tempe. This dataset provides the target and actual job creation numbers for the City of Tempe and the Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC). The job creation target for Tempe is calculated by multiplying GPEC's target by twice Tempe's proportion of the population. It also includes and distinguishes both Wage and Salary employees from Proprietors who own their own unincorporated businesses and handle taxation chiefly as personal income.     The City of Austin’s “DTI 2060 Population and Employment Forecast” is a long-range, small-area population and employment forecast produced by the Demographics and Data Division in the Planning Department in conjunction with representatives from multiple City departments making up the DTI Work Group. DTI stands for Delphi, Trends, and Imagine Austin, and the "DTI 2060 Population and Employment Forecast” is an update to the "Population Projections 2040". The DTI work group produced population and employment forecasts within each polygon in the study area for the year 2025 and the decades from 2030 to 2060, using the year 2020 as the baseline and half of 2010’s migration trends. Potential population and employment growth were forecast within Imagine Austin activity centers and along mixed-use corridors using City staff knowledge of the trends within current development patterns and practices. The DTI 2060 forecast incorporates urban-centric future growth and development and accounts for widely-dispersed, low-density suburban development.

    Description

    In the years since Michael Porter's paper about the potential competitiveness of inner cities there has been growing evidence of a residential resurgence in urban neighborhoods. Yet, there is less evidence on the competitiveness of inner cities for employment. We document the trends in net employment growth and find that inner cities gained over 1.8 million jobs between 2002 and 2011 at a rate comparable to suburban areas. We also find a significant number of inner cities are competitive over this period—increasing their share of metropolitan employment in 144 out of 281 MSAs. We also describe the pattern of job growth within the inner city, finding that tracts that grew faster tended to be closer to downtown, with access to transit, and adjacent to areas with higher population growth. However, tracts with higher poverty rates experienced less job growth, indicating that barriers still exist in the inner city.

Tempe is among Arizona's most educated cities, lending to a creative, smart atmosphere. With more than a dozen colleges, trade schools, and universities, about 40 percent of our residents over the age of 25 have Bachelor's degrees or higher. Having such an educated and accessible workforce is a driving factor in attracting and growing jobs for residents in the region.The City of Tempe is a member of the Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC), and with the membership, staff tracks collaborative efforts to recruit business prospects and locations. The Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC) is a performance-driven, public-private partnership. GPEC partners with the City of Tempe, Maricopa County, 22 other communities, and more than 170 private-sector investors to promote the region’s competitive position and attract quality jobs that enable strategic economic growth and provide increased tax revenue for Tempe. This dataset provides the target and actual job creation numbers for the City of Tempe and the Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC). The job creation target for Tempe is calculated by multiplying GPEC's target by twice Tempe's proportion of the population.
