These data, adjusted for seasonal variations and working days (CVS-CJO), show the number of jobseekers registered at the end of the month at Pôle emploi.
The ages used for the different series are the average ages during the quarter (average age of the job seeker over the 3 months considered).
None of the data in this file has been the subject of an application for labelling with the Authority for Public Statistics.
Full documentation on data on registered jobseekers and vacancies collected by Pôle emploi is available on the Dares website (see document Methodological documentation - Jobseekers).
The data are taken from the files of the Monthly Labour Market Statistics (MLTS) of Dares and Pôle emploi.
In addition to labour market developments, data on jobseekers can be affected by a number of factors: changes to the rules on compensation or support for jobseekers, procedural changes, incidents. A document presents the main procedural changes and incidents affecting the statistics of jobseekers since 2011 (see document Incidents and procedural changes).
Certain precautions are necessary for the interpretation of the monthly series on jobseekers. Consult the documentation (See How to interpret statistics? - Jobseekers)
Since 2022: Number of jobseekers in categories A and BC and reasons for leaving In January 2022, the month-end update procedure for jobseekers was improved for young people under 26 years of age. This was extended to young people under the age of 30 in February 2022. The new update form was introduced in stages during 2022 for jobseekers aged 30 or over in the various regions (see document Incidents and procedural changes). This development has a lasting downward impact on the number of jobseekers in category A, in return for a slight increase in departures from the lists at the time of the transition to the updated version, and a lasting increase in categories B and C linked to the better declaration of hours of reduced activity and a slight increase in departures from the lists at the time of the transition of the region to the updated version.
In total, switching to the new update form would lead to a cumulative decrease of 105 000 jobseekers in category A between January and November 2022, increasing the number of jobseekers in categories B and C by 90 000 and exits by 15 000. The evolution of the update form also leads to a lasting change in the distribution of outflows by reason. In particular, with the new discounting script, there are more outflows due to non-discounting, while re-employment is reported less often: the share of discount defaults in outflows increases by 6 points and the share of re-employment decreases by 6 points.
In 2023, roughly 2.2 million people were looking for employment registered under the PESO Employment Information System (PEIS) of the labor department in the Philippines. This was just slightly higher than in the previous year.
Employment situation in the Philippines
The Philippines has a predominantly young population, with working-age individuals totaling about 77 million in 2022. In that same year, the employment rate stood at 94.6 percent, with over half of the employed population working in the services industry. However, as the country experienced long periods of lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, unemployment and underemployment slightly increased. Most importantly, the number of job vacancies registered under the PESO Employment Information System (PEIS) in that year was just a third of the total number of registered job seekers in the Philippines.
PESO Employment Information System (PEIS) – more information
To improve the local labor and employment situation in the Philippines, the Department of Labor and Employment created a database that shows information on job vacancies and the active workforce supply of registered job seekers. Through this free multiservice facility, applicants can request a job match based on their skills, while employers can fill in their vacancies by browsing through a database of qualified applicants. In 2023, about 35,000 employers registered on the platform, looking mostly for production workers and call center agents.

We use online job application data to study the relationship between search intensity and search duration. The data allow us to control for job seeker composition and the evolution of available job openings over the duration of search. We find that, within an individual search spell, search intensity declines continuously. We also find that longer-duration job seekers search more intensely throughout their search. They tend to be older, male, nonemployed, and live in areas with weaker labor markets. Our findings contradict standard assumptions of labor search models. We discuss how to reconcile the theory with our evidence.

Could we significantly reduce US unemployment by helping job seekers move closer to jobs? Using data from the leading employment board CareerBuilder.com, we show that, indeed, workers dislike applying to distant jobs: job seekers are 35 percent less likely to apply to a job 10 miles (mi.) away from their zip code of residence. However, because job seekers are close enough to vacancies on average, this distaste for distance is fairly inconsequential: our search and matching model predicts that relocating job seekers to minimize unemployment would decrease unemployment by only 5.3 percent. Geographic mismatch is thus a minor driver of aggregate unemployment.
