    Description

Abstract The objective of this work was to identify scientific journals that were discontinued in the Scientific Electronic Library Online Brazil Collection and to analyze the motivations expressed in the editorials. The methodology involved identifying the characteristics of the 75 journal titles, and the editorials of the year of discontinuation and the subsequent one were analyzed using the content analysis technique. The results show 75 journals from all areas of knowledge, 52 published editorials on the subject, from which 156 texts were identified. Scientific Electronic Library Online uses two categories of generic reasons: finished (40 titles), the titles have been changed, with 38 remaining at the base, and interrupted indexing (35 titles) that were taken off the base, but the volumes already indexed were maintained. In the finished category, five main motivations were identified: internationalization and / or international visibility (62.5%), modernization (5.0%), change of publishing entity (5.0%), change of publishing entity and internationalization (2.5%), absorbed by another journal (2.5%), unidentified motivations (22.5%). In the interrupted indexing category, we identified three main motivations: internationalization and or international visibility, partnership with an international commercial publisher (34.0%), delay in launching new issues (14.4%), against Scientific Electronic Library Online internationalization policy (2,9%), unidentified motivations (48.7%). The large number of reasons not identified in editorials shows the need to increase transparency in the management of journals. Internationalization, the main motivation found, promoted by Scientific Electronic Library Online criteria and seems to have been understood in several ways in the editorials. While the majority remained at the base, 12 titles that entered into partnerships with international commercial publishers were identified and left Scientific Electronic Library Online.

    Description

This dataset is a comprehensive, journal-level collection of metadata for 47,625 active journals that publish using the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. It covers the period from 2020 to 2023 and aggregates information from multiple sources, including the PKP Beacon, ISSN.org, DOI resolution services, and bibliographic indices such as OpenAlex, DOAJ, and Scopus. The dataset not only captures the basic journal identifiers and descriptive metadata but also a rich set of indicators that support multifaceted analysis of scholarly publishing practices. Key characteristics of the dataset include:  Identifiers and Journal Metadata:  – Primary and secondary ISSNs validated against the official registry.  – Journal titles as registered within OJS, with standardization measures applied (e.g., transliteration and phonetic comparisons).  – A consolidated country of publication determined through multiple sources such as ISSN records, DOAJ listings, and IP-address based geolocation.   Publication Activity:  – Annual record counts for the years 2020 through 2023 along with cumulative document counts.  – Detailed measures of scholarly output per journal that allow evaluation of publication volume, which serves as a proxy for journal activity and editorial engagement.   Indexing and DOI Usage:  – Indicators showing whether a journal is indexed in key bibliographic databases like OpenAlex, Scopus, and DOAJ.  – Variables indicating whether the journal assigns Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) through registration agencies (with specific fields for Crossref, DataCite, Medra, JALC, Airiti, etc.).  – Matched counts of DOIs verified against external resolvers, highlighting the reliability and completeness of a journal's metadata.   Economic and Regional Context:  – Data on the country’s income group and GDP per capita, which serve as proxies for the resource environment and infrastructural capacity available to each journal.  – The total number of JUOJS identified per country, providing a measure of the national landscape of scholarly publishing.   Digital Presence and Repository Characteristics:  – Web visibility metrics provided by Open PageRank scores for both the individual journal’s webpage and its hosting repository’s endpoint.  – The size of the OJS repository (i.e., the number of journals hosted on the same installation), offering insight into shared infrastructure and editorial scale.   Linguistic and Disciplinary Classification:  – Automated language detection results and aggregated language proportions, highlighting the degree to which journals publish in English versus non‑English languages.  – A machine-learning derived subject classification assigning each journal to a main scholarly discipline, which enables discipline-specific analysis. Designed for bibliometric and scientometric research, the dataset enables users to explore the relationships between a journal’s editorial practices, its digital identifier usage, national and economic contexts, and its likelihood of being indexed in inclusive scholarly databases. The extensive metadata and derived metrics support complex analyses, such as classification modeling to identify determinants of indexing in OpenAlex and factors associated with the adoption of Crossref DOIs. The dataset is contributes to exploring trends in global scholarly communication and assess structural disparities in the digital dissemination of knowledge.

    Description

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Increased frequency of retractions has recently been observed, and retractions are important events that deserve scientific investigation. This study aimed to characterize cases of retraction within general and internal medicine in a high-profile database, with interest in the country of origin of the article and the impact factor (IF) of the journal in which the retraction was made. DESIGN AND SETTING: This study consisted of reviewing retraction notes in the Thomson-Reuters Web of Knowledge (WoK) indexing database, within general and internal medicine. METHODS: The retractions were classified as plagiarism/duplication, error, fraud and authorship problems and then aggregated into two categories: "plagiarism/duplication" and "others." The countries of origin of the articles were dichotomized according to the median of the indicator "citations per paper" (CPP), and the IF was dichotomized according to its median within general and internal medicine, also obtained from the WoK database. These variables were analyzed using contingency tables according to CPP (high versus low), IF (high versus low) and period (1992-2002 versus 2003-2014). The relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated for plagiarism/duplication. RESULTS: A total of 86 retraction notes were identified, and retraction reasons were found for 80 of them. The probability that plagiarism/duplication was the reason for retraction was more than three times higher for the low CPP group (RR: 3.4; 95% CI: [1.9-6.2]), and similar results were seen for the IF analysis. CONCLUSION: The study identified greater incidence of plagiarism/duplication among retractions from countries with lower scientific impact.

    Description

This table shows the list of journals selected in the research entitled "Citation patterns, the Matilda effect and gender bias in communication & media Studies scientific output in Ibero-America (1980-2022)". This article analyses diachronically the role of women in the field of communication & media Studies in Ibero-America by studying the presence or absence of women in the bibliography of a selection of articles taken from 60 communication academic journals in nine countries (Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru) between 1980 and 2022. This study measures the degree of visibility of female scientists and their contribution and compares it statistically to that of their male counterparts by quantifying from a gender perspective the citation patterns of authors of the 484 scientific articles included in the study. The findings showed that the visibility of the female researchers-authors increased over time. Furthermore, an over-citation of publications by male researchers was also found. Last, in one of the periods analysed, in the years between 1996-2010, gender homophily was found, i.e. female researchers tended to cite more women than men during this period.

    Description

This is dataset about Serbian papers published in journals indexed in Web of Science collections in the period 2003-2021
We used as "serbian" countries: Serbia, Serbia and Montenegro, Yugoslavia

The terms Serbian researcher and Serbian paper used in this dataset are defined as follows:
Serbian researcher is a researcher affiliated with a Serbian institution,
Serbian paper is a paper with at least one Serbian researcher in the list of authors.
This means that a paper published by a researcher with non-Serbian nationality (i.e. German) working at a Serbian institution is taken into account in the analysis of Serbian papers described in this paper.

Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science (WoS) database was used for data acquisition. We searched Serbian papers in two WoS collections - Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) and the Social Science Citation Index (SSCI). The search query executed over those collections on 18th of January, 2022.
    CU=(%Serbia% OR %Serbia and Montenegro% OR %Yugoslavia%) AND PY=[2003-2021]

We also analyzed the number of articles of Serbian researchers published in journals with an unstable impact factor (IF), i.e. journals which didn’t have an IF before 2008, and had one in some subperiod of 2008-2015, i.e. lost their IF until 2015. The majority of those journals stopped being indexed in Web of Science as a ban for losing the quality or having predatory journal behavior. We found 143 such journals and their ISSNs by using the JCR (Journal citation reports in the period 2007 - 2015).

    Description

The aim of this paper is to present an assessment of the positioning of "diamond" open access (OA) journals, understanding by positioning their indexing in Web of Science and Scopus, the two indexes of academic journals that form the reference framework for the evaluation of publications, as well as of the articles and the academic performance of their authors. The intention that aims to justify this work is to promote the choice of diamond open access journals as publication journals by those authors who base their journal selection criteria on the currently predominant scheme for scientific evaluation and recognition, which is based on WoS/Scopus citation indicators. Although there is abundant literature and controversy on the biases, inconveniences and distortions caused by the unilaterally quantitative evaluation procedure and filtered by bibliometric indicators, this work aims to favor the perception of diamond OA journals in order to counteract the "Gold" open access publication based on article processing charges. The source of information for the identification and retrieval of information on OA diamond journals worldwide is the Directory of Open Access Journals. To process the information, a database was created, which is available online and whose function is to update its contents annually in order to support authors in the selection of journals for publication, with the double characteristic of international indexing and the absence of APCs.

    Description

Abstract Indicators of scientific production are generally used in the evaluation of the academic community. As a quality parameter, the bibliographic databases are used for the selection of the most important scientific journals, a relevant role in the evaluation process. On the other hand, when the analysis is restricted to the indexed production, there is a risk of disqualifying production in journals that are not indexed. Qualis aims to address this issue by enabling areas to value non-indexed journals, even as they do not always consider the volume of articles published in these journals. This paper presents an exploratory analysis of the dispersion of the scientific production of 260,663 researchers with doctorate level registered in the Lattes Platform. For the determination of the national panorama, we considered all the full papers they published in scientific journals between 1998 and 2016. This panorama includes analyzes divided by the researchers’ knowledge areas, the publications’ countries, as well as the indexation of the publications in the different journals. Internationalization trends were observed, as well as the importance of national journals as vehicles for the publication of a significant part of the scientific production in some areas. Additionally, we observed the limitation of studies that do not consider scientific production in non-indexed journals, or studies restricted to Scopus and/or Web of Science databases that do not consider Scientific Electronic Library Online.
