An academic journal or research journal is a periodical publication in which research articles relating to a particular academic discipline is published, according to Wikipedia. Currently, there are more than 25,000 peer-reviewed journals that are indexed in citation index databases such as Scopus and Web of Science. These indexes are ranked on the basis of various metrics such as CiteScore, H-index, etc. The metrics are calculated from yearly citation data of the journal. A lot of efforts are given to make a metric that reflects the journal's quality.

This is a comprehensive dataset on the academic journals coving their metadata information as well as citation, metrics, and ranking information. Abstract

This dataset provides information on Open Access (OA) journals listed in the ROAD (Directory of Open Access Scholarly Resources) and their presence in various indexing and reference databases, including Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), DOAJ, Sherpa, OpenAlex, and Top Factor. The data support analyses of the accessibility and indexing of OA journals across multiple scholarly platforms.

Data Structure

The dataset includes the following columns:

• leader: Unique identifier for the journal (e.g., ISSN or eISSN).
• iso3_code: ISO 3 code representing the country of the journal's publisher.
• issn: ISSN/EISSN identifier for the journal.
• field_981_a: The discipline of the journal.
• in_scopus: Binary flag (0/1) indicating whether the journal is indexed in Scopus.
• in_wos: Binary flag (0/1) indicating whether the journal is indexed in Web of Science (WoS).
• in_doaj: Binary flag (0/1) indicating whether the journal is listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).
• in_sherpa: Binary flag (0/1) indicating whether the journal is listed in Sherpa Romeo.

Version 1: Description

This dataset contains a list of journals that publish data articles, code, software articles and database articles.

The search strategy in DOAJ and Ulrichsweb was the search for the word data in the title of the journals.

This single journal study investigated the predatory journal landscape in the information systems field, by analysing the International Journal of Applied Information Systems (IJAIS). The IJAIS was viewed from a bibliometric and citation perspective. The bibliometric study examined article productivity, authorship patterns and collaboration. An analysis was performed of 728 articles published in 11 volumes and 104 issues of IJAIS in the period 2012 to 2017. The citation study analysed citations to IJAIS papers in Scopus and Web of Science. A cited reference search was conducted in Scopus and Web of Science, and IJAIS papers cited in the list of references or works cited in Scopus or Web of Science papers were retrieved. Results of the bibliometric study revealed that the average number of articles per volume in IJAIS was 62. 1837 authors contributed to this journal. The journal displays a collaborative authorship pattern with 627 (86.13%) articles that were co-authored, compared to 101 (13.87%) that were single authored. The citation study showed that 751 Scopus papers cite IJAIS, of which 18 were review papers, compared to 153 Web of Science papers that cite IJAIS of which 9 were review papers. Of the 728 IJAIS articles published, 198 (27.2%) papers were cited in Scopus and Web of Science combined.

Context

The following shortlist of diamond open-access journals was compiled to increase awareness of alternative scholarly publication models among the six departments of the Faculty of Science at Utrecht University. The list is relevant to the six disciplines at the Faculty of Science: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Information and Computing Sciences, Physics, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. For this purpose, a "diamond journal" is defined as a journal indexed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) that does not charge an article processing charge (APC).

Contents and Results

The Excel file titled “Diamond_journals_faculty_of_science_UU” contains the list of selected diamond journals based on the following criteria: they allow submissions in English, have a plagiarism screening policy, possess an electronic ISSN number, and accept submissions in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Information and Computing Sciences, Physics, and Pharmaceutical Sciences. In this shortlist, 355 journals meet the criteria. Out of these 355 journals, only 29 have received a DOAJ seal, 150 journals are indexed in Scopus, and 94 journals are indexed in Web of Science.

The raw CSV data has been included under the name "Raw_DOAJ_journal_metadata_2023_07_25".

Limitations

The compilers of this shortlist are aware that some current diamond journals could change their status to non-diamond by charging article processing fees at a later stage. Since the journal record is not always updated by the publishers, we strongly recommend the users double-check the latest open access status directly on the journal's homepage (journal URLs are provided in the Excel file). The same applies for Scopus and WOS indexations.

Introduction: These datasets contain information about journals in the eight regions of the world based on United Nations SDG classification (Central& Southern Asia, Europe, Eastern &South Eastern Asia, Latin America, North Africa& Western Asia, Oceania, North America and Sub-Saharan Africa) that are indexed in Web of Science/Scopus and are available in Ulrich periodical directory. The datasets were created by matching Ulrich journal information with journal information from Web of Science and Scopus.

Data Creation: A single Web of Science master journal list was created for SSCI, SCI, AHCI and ESCI by combining and removing duplicate records from their lists; the Web of Science master journal contained 21,908 unique journals. Only active scholarly journals from Scopus were included in this study; i.e. duplicates, all inactive sources, trade journals, book series, monographs and conference proceedings were removed. 26,029 active journals of the 43,013 sources in Scopus were included. Journal lists from 239 countries were collected from Ulrich comprehensive periodical directory and analyzed by region. After removal of duplicates, this generated a database of 83,429 unique active academic journals. To compile regional and global datasets, duplicate journals in the regional and global levels, respectively, were removed. The master journal lists created from Web of Science, Scopus and Ulrich were transferred to an SQL database for querying. Journal matching was carried out in two steps. Firstly, the ISSN numbers of journals in Web of Science and Scopus were used to match journal records to Ulrich. In the second step, the remaining journals were then matched using their titles, and these matches were manually verified to reduce the chances of false positives. Using these two steps, we were able to match 20,255 (92.46%) of the journals in Web of Science, and 23,349 (89.70%) of the academic journals from Scopus, with Ulrichsweb journal list.

This dataset is a comprehensive, journal-level collection of metadata for 47,625 active journals that publish using the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform. It covers the period from 2020 to 2023 and aggregates information from multiple sources, including the PKP Beacon, ISSN.org, DOI resolution services, and bibliographic indices such as OpenAlex, DOAJ, and Scopus. The dataset not only captures the basic journal identifiers and descriptive metadata but also a rich set of indicators that support multifaceted analysis of scholarly publishing practices. Key characteristics of the dataset include:  Identifiers and Journal Metadata:  – Primary and secondary ISSNs validated against the official registry.  – Journal titles as registered within OJS, with standardization measures applied (e.g., transliteration and phonetic comparisons).  – A consolidated country of publication determined through multiple sources such as ISSN records, DOAJ listings, and IP-address based geolocation.   Publication Activity:  – Annual record counts for the years 2020 through 2023 along with cumulative document counts.  – Detailed measures of scholarly output per journal that allow evaluation of publication volume, which serves as a proxy for journal activity and editorial engagement.   Indexing and DOI Usage:  – Indicators showing whether a journal is indexed in key bibliographic databases like OpenAlex, Scopus, and DOAJ.  – Variables indicating whether the journal assigns Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) through registration agencies (with specific fields for Crossref, DataCite, Medra, JALC, Airiti, etc.).  – Matched counts of DOIs verified against external resolvers, highlighting the reliability and completeness of a journal's metadata.   Economic and Regional Context:  – Data on the country’s income group and GDP per capita, which serve as proxies for the resource environment and infrastructural capacity available to each journal.  – The total number of JUOJS identified per country, providing a measure of the national landscape of scholarly publishing.   Digital Presence and Repository Characteristics:  – Web visibility metrics provided by Open PageRank scores for both the individual journal’s webpage and its hosting repository’s endpoint.  – The size of the OJS repository (i.e., the number of journals hosted on the same installation), offering insight into shared infrastructure and editorial scale.   Linguistic and Disciplinary Classification:  – Automated language detection results and aggregated language proportions, highlighting the degree to which journals publish in English versus non‑English languages.  – A machine-learning derived subject classification assigning each journal to a main scholarly discipline, which enables discipline-specific analysis. Designed for bibliometric and scientometric research, the dataset enables users to explore the relationships between a journal’s editorial practices, its digital identifier usage, national and economic contexts, and its likelihood of being indexed in inclusive scholarly databases. The extensive metadata and derived metrics support complex analyses, such as classification modeling to identify determinants of indexing in OpenAlex and factors associated with the adoption of Crossref DOIs. The dataset is contributes to exploring trends in global scholarly communication and assess structural disparities in the digital dissemination of knowledge.

This dataset was compiled as part of a study on Barriers and Opportunities in the Discoverability and Indexing of Student-led Academic Journals. The list of student journals and their details is compiled from public sources. This list is used to identify the presence of Canadian student journals in Google Scholar as well as in select indexes and databases: DOAJ, Scopus, Web of Science, Medline, Erudit, ProQuest, and HeinOnline. Additionally, journal publishing platform is recorded to be used for a correlational analysis against Google Scholar indexing results. For further details see README.
