    Description

    This year marks the 45th anniversary of the F-3 tornado that roared through downtown Kalamazoo shortly after 4:00 PM on May 13, 1980. This tornado killed 5 people and injured many more. 47 homes, 2 factories, and 22 other buildings were destroyed. Significant damage to 2 churches, 253 homes, 156 businesses, and 4 factories also occurred. Approximately 1,200 people were left homeless as a result of this tornado (Grazulis, 1993). President Jimmy Carter declared Kalamazoo County a federal disaster area.
