    Description

The 2022 cartographic boundary KMLs are simplified representations of selected geographic areas from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). These boundary files are specifically designed for small-scale thematic mapping. When possible, generalization is performed with the intent to maintain the hierarchical relationships among geographies and to maintain the alignment of geographies within a file set for a given year. Geographic areas may not align with the same areas from another year. Some geographies are available as nation-based files while others are available only as state-based files. School Districts are single-purpose administrative units within which local officials provide public educational services for the area's residents. The Census Bureau obtains the boundaries, names, local education agency codes, grade ranges, and school district levels for school districts from state officials for the primary purpose of providing the U.S. Department of Education with estimates of the number of children in poverty within each school district. This information serves as the basis for the Department of Education to determine the annual allocation of Title I funding to states and school districts. The cartographic boundary files include separate files for elementary, secondary and unified school districts. The generalized school district boundaries in this file are based on those in effect for the 2021-2022 school year, i.e., in operation as of January 1, 2022.

The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. The primary legal divisions of most states are termed counties. In Louisiana, these divisions are known as parishes. In Alaska, which has no counties, the equivalent entities are the organized boroughs, city and boroughs, municipalities, and for the unorganized area, census areas. The latter are delineated cooperatively for statistical purposes by the State of Alaska and the Census Bureau. In four states (Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia), there are one or more incorporated places that are independent of any county organization and thus constitute primary divisions of their states. These incorporated places are known as independent cities and are treated as equivalent entities for purposes of data presentation. The District of Columbia and Guam have no primary divisions, and each area is considered an equivalent entity for purposes of data presentation. The Census Bureau treats the following entities as equivalents of counties for purposes of data presentation: Municipios in Puerto Rico, Districts and Islands in American Samoa, Municipalities in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and Islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The entire area of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas is covered by counties or equivalent entities. The boundaries for counties and equivalent entities are as of January 1, 2017, primarily as reported through the Census Bureau's Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS).

County subdivisions are the primary divisions of counties and their equivalent entities for the reporting of Census Bureau data. They include legally- recognized minor civil divisions (MCDs) and statistical census county divisions (CCDs), and unorganized territories. For the 2010 Census, the MCDs are the primary governmental and/or administrative divisions of counties in 29 States and Puerto Rico; Tennessee changed from having CCDs for Census 2000 to having MCDs for the 2010 Census. In MCD States where no MCD exists or is not defined, the Census Bureau creates statistical unorganized territories to complete coverage. The entire area of the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Island Areas are covered by county subdivisions. The boundaries of most legal MCDs are as of January 1, 2019, as reported through the Census Bureau's Boundary and Annexation Survey (BAS). The boundaries of all CCDs, delineated in 20 states, are those as reported as part of the Census Bureau's Participant Statistical Areas Program (PSAP) for the 2010 Census.

    Description

The Kansas Cartographic Database (KCD) is an exact digital representation of selected features from the USGS 7.5 minute topographic map series. Features that are captured include: county boundaries, township boundaries, section corners, major transportation, railroads, and principle hydrology. Major transportation and principle hydrology are defined as those features that are found on the official USGS 1:500,000 state map. It represents the general hydrologic and transportation network in Kansas. More detailed hydrology (all streams and lakes) is available but has not been converted to Arc/Info. This can be requested through KGS. The data was captured using in-house software titled GIMMAP. It was imported into Arc/Info using the generate format and then cleaned or built. It was designed to be a cartographic database for use on state and county map production.

These shapefiles includes surficial geology, contacts, fault, and marker bed layers providing the legend for the surficial geology layer. Original data from 1940's-1960's. This database was developed to create a usable dataset of Kansas counties where no new mapping has taken place. It shows locations of geologic outcrops, contacts, and geologic structures in Kansas counties. This geologic data is that of the original geologic map and is the interpretation of the map's author. New information not included in this data may prove the interpretation to be incorrect. In addition, stratigraphic nomenclature used on the original map may not agree with current usage.Data is from the Kansas Geological Survey - Cartographic Services and its predecessors. The surficial geology layers display attributed polygons representing intervals in the stratigraphic sequence identified and mapped at the surface of the county. In the contacts layers of the database, contacts corresponding to the boundaries between adjacent geologic polygons on the map are represented by attributed line features. Marker bed layers include distinctive beds of rock strata that are easily distinguishable and observable over large horizontal distances. The surface expression of structural geologic features such as faults or the axis of a fold, syncline, or anticline are represented by attributed line features in the faults layers. Not all counties will have layers for all these features. Counties included are: Allen, Barton, Brown, Cheyenne, Clay, Cloud, Cowley, Decatur, Ellsworth, Franklin, Gove, Graham, Grant, Greeley, Harper, Haskell, Jackson, Kingman, Kiowa, Lane, Lincoln, Linn, Logan, Marshall, Meade, Miami, Mitchell, Nemaha, Ottawa, Pratt, Rawlins, Reno, Rice, Rush, Scott, Seward, Sheridan, Sherman, Stanton, Stevens, Sumner, Thomas, Trego, Wallace, Wichita

    Description

The Kansas County Databases of the U.S. Public Land Survey System (PLSS) provide, for each of the 105 counties in Kansas, high quality digital representations of basic Kansas land divisions first established by the PLSS, primarily between the years of 1854 and 1877. They are derived from data contained in PLSS databases of the USGS 24K Digital Line Graph (DLG) series and data from the Kansas Cartographic Database (KCD) developed by the Kansas Geological Survey. All of the data is derived from USGS 7.5 minute quadrangles. Only minimal edge matching was performed between DLG databases. Features represented in the county databases include the basic point, line and area features established in the original Public Land Surveys of Kansas. Currently lacking from this collection is a complete representation of Indian land boundaries surveyed in Kansas as part of the original PLSS while those Indian lands were still excluded from the public lands. The data from the KCD was captured using in-house KGS software, GIMMAP (Geodata Interactive Management, Mapping and Production). Using Arc Macro Language (AML) files, DLG"s for individual quadrangles covering each county were imported into Arc/Info using the "dlgarc" command. The individual DLG"s were then merged and cleaned to form the county databases. This procedure was only possible after the original USGS DLG"s were reformatted to establish uniform numbers and sequences of attributes for all nodes, areas, and lines in the original USGS DLG"s.The full Kansas geospatial catalog is administered by the Kansas Data Access & Support Center (DASC) and can be found at the following URL: https://hub.kansasgis.org/

Contour lines were generated at 2 foot intervals by county using Kansas LiDAR Bare Earth DEMs collected from 2015 through 2018. The source LiDAR Bare Earth DEM tiles are 1 meter resolution USGS QL2 data. A contouring script developed by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources was adapted to create Kansas contours at every 2 feet, 10 feet at a time. Contour lines were then simplified using a 2 foot tolerance, and lines less than 100 feet were removed. There is a identifier in the attribute table for 10 foot contour lines. Generalization of the contours lines over water bodies and roads will have a triangular appearance due to their lack of elevation data.In steep terrain, it is possible that the individual contours lines may cross each other. Due to the processing steps of creating individual lines and then merging lines into a single file, overlaps may exist and have not been and will not be fixed. For more detailed information on the Kansas LiDAR project areas: LinkPresentation at the 2023 Kansas Association of Mappers conference: LinkThe full Kansas geospatial catalog is administered by the Kansas Data Access & Support Center (DASC) and can be found at the following URL: https://hub.kansasgis.org/

    Description

The 2005 Kansas Land Cover Patterns (KLCP) Mapping Initiative was a two-phase mapping endeavor that occurred over a three-year period (2007-2009). Note that while the processing occurred during the 2207-2009 period, all satellite data used in the project was acquired in 2005. Concurrent with mapping the state of Kansas, the Kansas River Watershed was also mapped. The Kansas River Watershed extends into southern Nebraska and includes a portion of eastern Colorado. During Phase I a Modified Level I map was produced. In Phase II a series of maps, Modified Level II through IV, were produced. All KLCP 2005 map products were produced at four spatial extents: the state of Kansas plus a 300 meter buffer, a DEM-derived watershed boundary of the Kansas River, the Kansas River watershed boundary plus a 1,000 meter buffer, and a combined dataset of the state of Kansas plus 300 meter buffer and the watershed plus 1,000 meter buffer. These extents are annotated in the file names with the extentions k, w, wb, and kwb respectively.

The goal of Phase II was to map subclasses for grassland and cropland, classes which were mapped during Phase I. For the Level II map, cool- and warm-season grasslands were mapped along with Spring Crop, Summer Crop, Alfalfa, Fallow, and Double-Crop classes. For the Level III map, the Summer Crop subclasses Corn, Soybean, and Sorghum were mapped, and the Spring Crop class was reassigned to Winter Wheat. In the Level IV map, irrigation status was mapped and added to the Level III crop type map.The Kansas Land Cover Patterns Level IV map contains twenty-four land use/land cover classes and has a positional accuracy and spatial resolution appropriate for producing 1:50,000 scale maps. The minimum map unit (MMU) varies by land cover class and ranges from 0.22 to 5.12 acres.

In general, the mapping methodology used a hybrid, hierarchical classification of multi-temporal, multi-resolution imagery to develop modified Anderson Level II through Anderson Level IV land cover maps of the Kansas River Watershed and the State of Kansas. More specifically, multi-seasonal Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) imagery from the 2004 and 2005 growing season was used to map the grassland subclasses (cool- and warm-season grasslands). while MODIS NDVI time-series imagery from the 2005 growing season was used to map cropland subclasses.

The land use/land cover classes in the Level IV map are coded hierarchically to allow aggregation of land use and land cover classes as needed by the end-user. For example, a user can aggregate the Level IV map classes to a Level III classification by ignoring or eliminating the last digit of each land use/land cover class. Likewise, a Level II and Level I map can be created from the Level IV map by eliminating the last two and three digits, respectively, from each Level IV land use/land cover class.

A formal accuracy assessment found the Level II, Level III, and Level IV maps to have overall accuracy levels of 86.3%, 82.0%, and 74.3%, respectively. User and Producer (per-class errors of commission and omission) accuracies vary by land cover class and users are encouraged to reference the reported accuracy levels in the final report and/or metadata when using the Kansas Land Cover Patterns map series. Digital versions of the map, metadata, and accuracy assessment can be accessed from the Data Access Support Center (http://www.kansasgis.org/) or the Kansas Applied Remote Sensing Program (http://www.kars.ku.edu/).

This database was developed as part of the Core Database for the State of Kansas. It is suited for county-level and watershed-level analysis that involve land use and land cover.
