    Description

The vertical land change activity focuses on the detection, analysis, and explanation of topographic change. These detection techniques include both quantitative methods, for example, using difference metrics derived from multi-temporal topographic digital elevation models (DEMs), such as, light detection and ranging (lidar), National Elevation Dataset (NED), Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (IFSAR), and qualitative methods, for example, using multi-temporal aerial photography to visualize topographic change. The geographic study area of this activity is Perry County, Kentucky. Available multi-temporal lidar, NED, SRTM, IFSAR, and other topographic elevation datasets, as well as aerial photography and multi-spectral image data were identified and downloaded for this study area county. Available mine maps and mine portal locations were obtained from the Kentucky Mine Mapping Information System, Division of Mine Safety, 300 Sower Boulevard, Frankfort, KY 40601 at http://minemaps.ky.gov/Default.aspx?Src=Downloads. These features were used to spatially locate the study areas within Perry County. Previously developed differencing methods (Gesch, 2006) were used to develop difference raster datasets of NED/SRTM (1950-2000 date range) and SRTM/IFSAR (2000-2008 date range). The difference rasters were evaluated to exclude difference values that were below a specified vertical change threshold, which was applied spatially by National Land Cover Dataset (NLCD) 1992 and 2006 land cover type, respectively. This spatial application of the vertical change threshold values improved the overall ability to detect vertical change because threshold values in bare earth areas were distinguished from threshold values in heavily vegetated areas. Lidar high-resolution (1.5 m) DEMs were acquired for Perry County, Kentucky from U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service Geospatial Data Gateway at https://gdg.sc.egov.usda.gov/GDGOrder.aspx#. ESRI Mosaic Datasets were generated from lidar point-cloud data and available topographic DEMs for the specified study area. These data were analyzed to estimate volumetric changes on the land surface at three different periods with lidar acquisitions collected for Perry County, KY on 3/29/12 to 4/6/12. A recent difference raster dataset time span (2008-2012 date range) was analyzed by differencing the Perry County lidar-derived DEM and an IFSAR-derived dataset. The IFSAR-derived data were resampled to the resolution of the lidar DEM (approximately 1-m resolution) and compared with the lidar-derived DEM. Land cover based threshold values were applied spatially to detect vertical change using the lidar/IFSAR difference dataset. Perry County lidar metadata reported that the acquisition required lidar to be collected with an average of 0.68 m point spacing or better and vertical accuracy of 15 cm root mean square error (RMSE) or better. Description

The KyFromAbove initiative is focused on building and maintaining a current basemap for Kentucky that can meet the needs of its users at the state, federal, local, and regional level. A common basemap, including current color leaf-off aerial photography and elevation data (LiDAR), reduces the cost of developing GIS applications, promotes data sharing, and add efficiencies to many business processes. All basemap data acquired through this effort is being made available in the public domain. KyFromAbove acquires aerial imagery and LiDAR during leaf-off conditions in the Commonwealth. The imagery typically ranges from 6-inches to 3-inches in resolution and is available from the kyfromabove Amazon S3 bucket in a Cloud Optimized GeoTiff format. LiDAR data acquired by the program is USGS Quality Level 2 (QL2). Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) at a 2-foot resolution, point cloud data in an LAS format, spot elevations in a geopackage format, and contours in a geopackage format are also available from the kyfromabove Amazon S3 bucket. KyFromAbove LiDAR and imagery data resources are managed in a Kentucky-specific 5000x5000 foot grid (FIPS:1600) (EPSG:3089). Description

These data are bathymetry (lake bottom elevation) in XYZ format (Easting, Northing, Elevation), generated from the May 30–June 1, 2023, bathymetric survey of Buckhorn Lake, Kentucky, from the dam to CR-1475 (19.5 miles total reach length). Hydrographic data were collected using a RESON 210 kHz NaviSound single-beam echosounder (SBES) with a Hemisphere A222 integrated global navigation satellite system (GNSS) smart antenna. The SBES and GNSS antenna were mounted on a marine survey vessel, and data were collected as the survey vessel traversed the lake along planned survey lines. A total of 380 survey lines were oriented approximately perpendicular to the primary flow direction at generally 250-foot or 500-foot spacing. Data collection software (HYPACK) integrated and stored the depth and position data from the SBES and GNSS antenna in real time. Water-surface elevations were measured at the boat ramp at the dam twice a day (before and after surveying) with a Trimble R8 survey-grade integrated GNSS system with real-time kinematic (RTK) observations to convert measured bathymetric depths to elevations referenced to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88). RTK observations were made using the Kentucky Continually Operating Reference System (KYCORS) network operated by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Data processing required computer software to extract the bathymetric data from the raw data files and to compile and map the information. The final comma-delimited file contains columns of Easting and Northing in feet North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83) Kentucky State Plane Single Zone (FIPS code 1600), and Elevation in feet NAVD 88. This dataset was collected in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Louisville District.

    Description

These data are bathymetry (river bottom elevation) in XYZ format (Easting, Northing, Elevation), generated from the September 17–18, 2020, survey of the Kentucky Dam tailwater from just downstream from Kentucky Dam to approximately 1,500 feet upstream from the I-24 bridge (about 1 mile total length). Bathymetric data were collected using an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) with an integrated global navigation satellite system (GNSS) smart antenna. The ADCP and GNSS antenna were mounted on a marine survey vessel, and data were collected as the survey vessel traversed the tailwater along planned survey lines. There was typically one reciprocal pair (two passes) of data collected per line. There was a total of 53 survey lines equally spaced 100 feet apart and oriented approximately perpendicular to the primary flow direction. Data collection software integrated and stored the depth and position data from the ADCP and GNSS antenna in real time. Water-surface elevations were measured at each planned line throughout the survey area with a survey-grade integrated GNSS system with real-time kinematic (RTK) observations in order to convert measured bathymetric depths to elevations referenced to NAVD 88. RTK observations were made using the Kentucky Continually Operating Reference System (KYCORS) network operated by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Data processing required computer software to extract the bathymetric data from the raw data files and to summarize and map the information.

    Description

Terrain data, as defined in FEMA Guidelines and Specifications, Appendix N: Data Capture Standards, describes the digital topographic data that was used to create the elevation data representing the terrain environment of a watershed and/or floodplain. Terrain data requirements allow for flexibility in the types of information provided as sources used to produce final terrain deliverables. Once this type of data is provided, FEMA will be able to account for the origins of the flood study elevation data. (Source: FEMA Guidelines and Specifications, Appendix N, Section N.1.2).

Description

This web map leverages the KyFromAbove 5 foot Digital Elevation Model (DEM) ArcGIS Server Image Service and provides a 5K tiling grid with embedded links for downloading individual DEM tiles from Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase3 collection periods. Each of the Phase1 DEM tiles are provided in an ERDAS Imagine (IMG) format and is zipped up with its associated metadata file in XML format. Phase2 and Phase3 DEM tiles are provided in a GeoTIFF format. The Phase1 data resource was derived from the ground class within KyFromAbove point cloud data and has a 5-foot point spacing. The Phase2 and Phase3 data was derived from the ground class within KyFromAbove point cloud data and has a 2-foot point spacing. DEM data specifications adopted by the KyFromAbove Technical Advisory Committee can be found here. More information regarding this data resource can be found on the KyFromAbove website.
