Offenses against individuals constituted the main type of crime reported to the police in Kenya as of 2022. There were some 22,500 records of this type recorded by the Kenyan police, excluding penal code offenses, offenses against morality, traffic offenses, offenses involving police officers, and those involving tourists. In the same year, 14,718 cases of stealing were officially reported. In total, Kenya recorded over 88,000 reported crimes in 2022.
According to the organized crime index, human trafficking and cyber-dependent crimes were the most prevalent criminal markets in Kenya in 2023, obtaining eight index points each. Overall, the region of East Africa had the highest level of criminality on the continent as of 2023.
As of 2020, nearly 70,000 crime cases were reported to the police in Kenya. This represented a decrease from 93.4 thousand registrations in the previous year and the first decline since 2015. Offenses against people were the most reported crime, followed by stealing.

Most victims of trafficking in persons on the continent are girls and women, who are predominantly victims of forced labor and sexual exploitation. Other common forms of criminality in Africa are financial crimes, as well as arms trafficking, which include the illegal trade of unauthorized small arms, ammunition, and explosives. Terrorism across Africa In recent years, terrorism has spread at particularly high levels in some African countries. Nigeria, headquarter of the Boko Haram terrorist group, has been facing high levels of crime, violence, and poor national security, and ranked among the highest 10 countries in the global terrorism index in 2022. However, Nigeria and Niger have seen improvements between 2020 and 2022, with the hot spot area in the region moving more towards the border area between Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. Furthermore, terrorism tends to have adverse effects on the economy. For example, the economic impact of terrorist acts between 2007 and 2019 in Nigeria amounted to around 142 billion U.S. dollars.
The number of economic crimes reported to the police in Kenya decreased to 3,488 in 2020. In the previous year, there were 4,786 registrations of this kind, the highest since 2010. Economic crimes included fraud and currency forgery.
As of 2020, some 3,111 homicides were reported to the police in Kenya, increasing from 2,971 in the previous year. The number kept a slow upward trend starting in 2016. Overall, more than 69 thousand reported crimes were registered within the Kenyan police in 2020.
As of 2022, a total of 5,850 kilograms of dangerous drugs were seized by police in Kenya. In the period observed, the highest amount of confiscated harmful drugs recorded was in 2021 at over 13,000 kilograms.
As of 2022, a total of 235 illegal firearms were recovered by police in Kenya, with rifles accounting for almost 82 percent. During the observed period, the amount of unlawful firearms seized was highest in 2019, with a summation of 884.
In 2021, the cases of violence against children in Kenya were over 147,000. This made 2021 the year with the highest number of reported violence cases among the years under review. Conversely, in 2017, there was the lowest number of cases, approximately 36,000. Since 2017, the number of cases has steadily increased.
In 2021, there were 1,976 reported cases of child trafficking in Kenya. This was a decrease from the year before, when approximately 2,500 cases were reported. During the years under review, the number of child trafficking cases was close to or above 2,000, with the exception of the year 2017, when there were below 1,000 reported cases.
In 2021, boys were reported to make up a higher number of victims of crime against children in Kenya. The number of violence cases against boys was over 74,000, while it was approximately 73,000 for girls. However, in the previous years under review, girls made up a slightly higher share of victims of violence against children.
As of 2022, a total of 3,879 ammunition rounds were recovered by police in Kenya. In the period observed, the highest amount of seized ammunition was recorded in 2019 at close to 12,000 rounds. The country has implemented a disarmament program in an effort to curb violence brought on by banditry and local conflicts.
As of 2021, the total number of drug and psychotropic substance arrests recorded by the Kenyan police amounted to over 4,700 cases. The number of Bhang related arrests were among the highest, with roughly 4,600, accounting for about 96.8 percent of the arrests made.
In the year 2021, the category with the highest number contraband goods cases recorded by police in in Kenya was cigarette packets, which amounted to around 60,900 cases. Contraband rice bags (25 kilograms) ranked second, with roughly 10,200 reported cases.
In 2021, there was a reported number of 996 cases of girls and 980 boys who were victims of child trafficking in Kenya. For the years under review, there were slightly more reports of girls being trafficked than boys, with the exception of 2017 when there were 440 reported cases of boys being trafficked compared to 368 cases of girls.
As of 2021, the total number of kidnapping cases recorded by the Kenyan police amounted to 58 cases. The highest number of cases was in Nairobi, with 16 kidnapping cases. Rift Valley followed close behind, with 14 reported incidences.
