    Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the 20 years data of U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP) 2000 - 2023. To measure the variables, namely (a) population and (b) population change in ( absolute and as a percentage ), we initially analyzed and tabulated the data for each of the years between 2000 and 2023. Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the Kern County population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Kern County across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    Key observations

In 2023, the population of Kern County was 913,820, a 0.32% decrease year-by-year from 2022. Previously, in 2022, Kern County population was 916,751, an increase of 0.44% compared to a population of 912,709 in 2021. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2023, population of Kern County increased by 250,333. In this period, the peak population was 916,751 in the year 2022. The numbers suggest that the population has already reached its peak and is showing a trend of decline. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP).

    Description

The Kern River deer herd includes primarily California mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus californicus), but some Inyo mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus inyoensis) associate with California mule deer on the summer range. The population size peaked at 11,000 individuals in 1949, but in recent decades numbers have decreased to an estimated 3,500 deer in 1995 and 2,000 deer in 2001. The population size estimate is now, conservatively, approximately 4,000 individuals owing primarily to habitat expansion by the 2001 McNally Fire (California Department of Fish and Wildlife unpublished data). The Kern River herd winters in Sequoia National Forest north of Johnsondale and east of Slate Mountain. In the spring, they migrate northward to an area by Redrocks Meadows and along the Kern Canyon ridgeline to their summer range in Sequoia National Park. The herd’s annual range spans the watersheds of the Kern and Little Kern rivers in eastern Tulare County. Elevations range from 2,500 ft on the southern slopes of the winter range to over 11,000 ft on the northern summer range. Telemetry data over the past two decades show considerable mixing between this herd and the Manache herd on their summer ranges. Further research may support the hypothesis that these herds are actually sub-herds of a larger population. These mapping layers show the location of the migration routes for mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) in the Kern River population in California. They were developed from 69 migration sequences collected from a sample size of 27 animals comprising GPS locations collected every 2 hours.

    Description

The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. Face refers to the areal (polygon) topological primitives that make up MTDB. A face is bounded by one or more edges; its boundary includes only the edges that separate it from other faces, not any interior edges contained within the area of the face. The Topological Faces Shapefile contains the attributes of each topological primitive face. Each face has a unique topological face identifier (TFID) value. Each face in the shapefile includes the key geographic area codes for all geographic areas for which the Census Bureau tabulates data for both the 2020 Census and the annual estimates and surveys. The geometries of each of these geographic areas can then be built by dissolving the face geometries on the appropriate key geographic area codes in the Topological Faces Shapefile.

    Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To measure the three variables, namely (a) male population, (b) female population and (b) total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages. Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the data for the Kern County, CA population pyramid, which represents the Kern County population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. It lists the male and female population for each age group, along with the total population for those age groups. Higher numbers at the bottom of the table suggest population growth, whereas higher numbers at the top indicate declining birth rates. Furthermore, the dataset can be utilized to understand the youth dependency ratio, old-age dependency ratio, total dependency ratio, and potential support ratio.

    Key observations

    • Youth dependency ratio, which is the number of children aged 0-14 per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Kern County, CA, is 37.0.
    • Old-age dependency ratio, which is the number of persons aged 65 or over per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Kern County, CA, is 18.0.
    • Total dependency ratio for Kern County, CA is 54.9.
    • Potential support ratio, which is the number of youth (working age population) per elderly, for Kern County, CA is 5.6.

    Description

The U.S. Geological Survey collected groundwater samples from 33 wells used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies in Kern County, California in 2022. The wells were sampled for the Kern County Domestic-Supply Aquifer Study Unit of the State Water Resources Control Board Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) Program Priority Basin Project’s assessment of the quality of groundwater resources used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies. The study unit was defined by the extent of the Kern County subbasin of the San Joaquin Valley groundwater basin. The study unit was divided into 40 grid cells and one or two domestic or small system well were sampled in to represent 29 of the grid cells; the remaining 11 grid cells had no accessible wells. Groundwater levels were measured in 11 of 33 wells. Table 1 contains sample and site information. Groundwater samples were analyzed for field water-quality parameters, microbial indicators, volatile organic compounds, pesticides and pesticide degradants, nutrients, major ions and trace elements, hexavalent chromium, perchlorate, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), stable isotopes, and groundwater age tracers. Results from these analyses are reported in Tables 2 through 8. Tables 9 and 10 report results from quality control samples. This data release contains two supplementary tables that define abbreviations (Table 11) and provide additional context for the information presented in Tables 1 through 10 (Table 12). A zipfile is included containing geospatial data (study unit boundaries, grid cell boundaries, site locations) as shapefiles.
