    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the Kings County population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Kings County across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    Key observations

In 2023, the population of Kings County was 2.56 million, a 1.09% decrease year-by-year from 2022. Previously, in 2022, Kings County population was 2.59 million, a decline of 1.82% compared to a population of 2.64 million in 2021. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2023, population of Kings County increased by 95,471. In this period, the peak population was 2.72 million in the year 2020. The numbers suggest that the population has already reached its peak and is showing a trend of decline. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP).

    Description

For more information about this layer please see the GIS Data Catalog. This layer was originally created to support the STAR Rating System objective EE-4: Equitable Services & Access Community Level Outcomes for King County. Three demographics are combined into one attribute to determine King County services access analysis by census tract. Each demographic: English proficiency, people of color, and household income, was applied to census tracts separately. This demographic information is based on the 2016 - 2020 American Community Survey from the Census Bureau. The demographic was sorted into five classes using the Natural Breaks classification. Then each class was given a score: 1 for the first class, 2 for the second class, 3 for the third class, etc. Next, each census tract received a score based on the class it was in: 1 if it was in the first class, 2 if it was in the second class, 3 if it was in the third class, etc. So each census tract will have a score for English proficiency (ESL_Score), a score for people of color (RE_Score), and a score for household income (Income_Score). These scores were added up (TotalScore) and an evenly weight average was determined (WeightedTotal333333). Thus each score for the census tracts represents a combination of demographics where lower scores mean a wealthier, less diverse community and higher scores mean more diverse, less wealthy community.

Male and Female Population Under 5 Years, Male and Female Population over 85 years, Male and Female Total Population for Age Groups, Male and Female Population Between 5 and 9 years, Male and Female Population Between 10 and 14 years, Male and Female Population Between 15 and 19 years, Male and Female Population Between 20 and 24 years, Male and Female Population Between 25 and 29 years, Male and Female Population Between 30 and 34 years, Male and Female Population Between 35 and 39 years, and 9 more
    Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To measure the three variables, namely (a) male population, (b) female population and (b) total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages. Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the data for the Kings County, CA population pyramid, which represents the Kings County population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. It lists the male and female population for each age group, along with the total population for those age groups. Higher numbers at the bottom of the table suggest population growth, whereas higher numbers at the top indicate declining birth rates. Furthermore, the dataset can be utilized to understand the youth dependency ratio, old-age dependency ratio, total dependency ratio, and potential support ratio.

    Key observations

    • Youth dependency ratio, which is the number of children aged 0-14 per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Kings County, CA, is 34.0.
    • Old-age dependency ratio, which is the number of persons aged 65 or over per 100 persons aged 15-64, for Kings County, CA, is 15.9.
    • Total dependency ratio for Kings County, CA is 49.9.
    • Potential support ratio, which is the number of youth (working age population) per elderly, for Kings County, CA is 6.3.
