The Kenai Peninsula Borough established a 50-foot Habitat Protection District for the Kenai River in 1996. In May of 2020, the KPB Assembly amended the existing 50-foot Habitat Protection District to include 24 additional salmon streams on the Peninsula.In January of 2012, additional anadromous streams (those on the west side of the Cook Inlet, to include Kalgin Island) were included in the ordinance.
