This dataset contains Illumina MiSeq sequencing reads produced during a community-initiated study of marine microbial diversity in La Jolla, California. The three collection sites, all popular swimming beaches, are notable for their differences in human activity and marine wildlife. 16S V4 rDNA sequencing of planktonic bacteria followed by diversity analysis in Qiime2 showed that La Jolla Cove and the La Jolla Children's Pool have significantly higher OTU diversity than La Jolla Shores. All three sites have distinct taxonomic composition. No evidence of pathogenic bacteria was found. This study is an example of low-budget, community-driven science that uses state-of-the-art DNA sequencing methods to advance our understanding of coastal environments.

High-throughput sequencing of ocean biomes has revealed vast eukaryotic microbial diversity, asignificant proportion of which remains uncharacterized. Here we use a temporal approach tounderstanding eukaryotic diversity at the Scripps Pier, La Jolla, California, USA, via high-throughput amplicon sequencing of the 18S rRNA gene, the abundances of both Synechococcusand Synechococcus grazers, and traditional oceanographic parameters. We also exploit ourability to track OTUs temporally to evaluate the ability of 18S sequence-based OTU assignmentsto meaningfully reflect ecological dynamics. The eukaryotic community is highly dynamic interms of both species richness and composition, though proportional representation of higher-order taxa remains fairly consistent over time. Synechococcus abundance fluctuates throughoutthe year. This study has resulted in a temporal dataset of eukaryotic 18S sequences that cover a wide range of taxa and offers insights into the pier microbial community and how it changes with time.

The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) have undertaken a project to explore ways of advancing implementation of ecosystem- based management in the Arctic marine environment through invited expert workshops. The first workshop, held in Washington, D.C. on 16-18 June, 2010, explored possible means to advance policy decisions on ecosystem-based marine management in the Arctic region. Twentynine legal and policy experts from around the region participated in the June workshop. The report and recommendations of the June policy workshop can be found here: Workshop report The second workshop, the subject of this report, was held at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California on 2-4 November, 2010. The La Jolla workshop utilized criteria developed under auspices of the Convention on Biological Diversity to identify ecologically significant and vulnerable marine areas that should be considered for enhanced protection in any new ecosystem-based management arrangements. A list of participants, the meeting agenda and other relevant documents are attached as appendices to this repor, see: Workshop report

The basic goal of the University of Colorado Geothermal Research Program has been to assess, characterize and model the myriad of physical processes occurring in the geothermal environment. While developing an understanding of the fundamental nature of these phenomena we can construct a comprehensive model of the structure of a given geothermal system. Such a result should prove useful in the interpretation of surface geophysical measurements and for the general development of a geothermal field. Our studies spanning the range from heat and mass transfer process in hydrothermal convection anomalies to the possible appearance of dilatancy due to large rates of liquid withdrawal, are carried out by a diverse group of engineers, geophysicists geologists, seismologists and experts in computation. Much of the effort has been carried out with the cooperation of the geothermal group at Systems, Science and Software, La Jolla, California. The following summary of activities provides an extremely brief description of the ongoing research programs, their purpose and when appropriate, the results obtained.
