The labor market engagement index provides a summary description of the relative intensity of labor market engagement and human capital in a neighborhood. This is based upon the level of employment, labor force participation, and educational attainment in a census tract (i). Formally, the labor market index is a linear combination of three standardized vectors: unemployment rate (u), labor-force participation rate (l), and percent with a bachelor’s degree or higher (b), using the following formula:
Where means and standard errors are estimated over the national distribution. Also, the value for the standardized unemployment rate is multiplied by -1.
Interpretation
Values are percentile ranked nationally and range from 0 to 100. The higher the score, the higher the labor force participation and human capital in a neighborhood.

This table contains yearly figures on the attachment of people to the labour market for the special municipalities Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba (the Caribbean Netherlands). The population of 15 to 74 years of age (excluding the institutionalized population) is divided into the employed labour force and the non-employed labour force. The employed labour force is subdivided on the basis of whether they want to work more or not. The non-employed labour force is subdivided into the unemployed and those not in the labour force. Those not in the labour force are subdivided based on the search and availability criteria. A division by sex, age and level of education is available.

Too little people were wrongly assigned to the group who wants to work more hours. This is corrected in this version of the table. The figures about the highest level of education have been revised. The revision concerns people who attended common years of education (avo). Where they previously had an intermediate level of education, they now receive a low level of education, following the format used for the European Netherlands.

Due to changes in the research design and the questionnaire of the LFS, the figures for 2021 are not automatically comparable with the figures up to and including 2020. The key figures in this table have therefore been made consistent with the (non-seasonally adjusted) figures in the table Arbeidsdeelname, kerncijfers seizoengecorrigeerd (see section 4), in which the outcomes for the period 2013-2020 have been recalculated to align with the outcomes from 2021. When further detailing the outcomes according to job and personal characteristics, there may nevertheless be differences from 2020 to 2021 as a result of the new method.

Statistics Norway established the Labor Force Survey (LFS) in 1972, and it has been conducted quarterly ever since. The LFS measures the population's participation in the labor market and provides comprehensive information on unemployment, employment, people outside the labor force, temporary employees, underemployed and other subgroups that are not captured by register-based statistics. This makes the LFS one of the most important sources of information about conditions in the Norwegian labor market.
Right from the start, the aim has been to ensure that the survey is comparable with similar surveys internationally. Today, the LFS is designed in accordance with the EU's statistical regulations to ensure consistent and comparable European statistics. The LFS data contains long time series, and although there have been some breaks in the time series due to changes in the questionnaire and data collection, the most central variables have been continuously included since the start. This makes it possible to present time series data for the employed, unemployed and people outside the labor force all the way back to 1972.
The annual datasets include annual and two-year variables and are only asked to individuals interviewed for the 2nd and 6th time. In even-numbered years, questions about education and health are included. This dataset includes questions related to the Learning Conditions Monitor.
