    Description

The labour force participation rate is the percentage of economically active population aged 15-64 on the total population of the same age. According to the definitions of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) for the purposes of the labour market statistics people are classified as employed, unemployed and outside the labour force. The economically active population (also called labour force) is the sum of employed and unemployed persons. Persons outside the labour force are those who, during the reference week, were neither employed nor unemployed. The MIP Scoreboard indicator is the three-year change in percentage points, with an indicative threshold of -0.2 pp. In the table, values are expressed also as percentage of total population. The data source is the quarterly EU Labour Force Survey (EU LFS). The survey covers the resident population in private households.

    Description

Statistics Norway established the Labor Force Survey (LFS) in 1972, and it has been conducted quarterly ever since. The LFS measures the population's participation in the labor market and provides comprehensive information on unemployment, employment, people outside the labor force, temporary employees, underemployed and other subgroups that are not captured by register-based statistics. This makes the LFS one of the most important sources of information about conditions in the Norwegian labor market.

This module collects information on receiving a pension, whether individuals combine work and pension, as well as the reasons for working or not. The purpose of the module is to map labour market participation among individuals aged 50 to 74.

The annual variables in the LFS are asked to individuals during the 2nd and 6th interview rounds.

In the LFS, individuals can be exempted from interviews starting from the 3rd round if, for example, they are retirees and no longer working. This is because the primary purpose of the LFS is to analyse the active labour market. Responses from the 2nd interview for those exempted are carried forward into subsequent rounds (passive sample). The consequence of this approach, particularly for this pensions module, is an undesirably high sample loss among retirees. Therefore, Statistics Norway impute for this module.

Stratified nearest neighbour imputation was used. For 2023, the stratification was specially tailored to impute responses to questions about pensions and labour market participation for individuals aged 50 to 74. The 2023 stratification is based on sex, age groups (15-49, 50-69, 70-89), marital status, and registered disability.

The imputation process involves copying all responses from the 2nd interview for 2-year and 8-year variables from a donor within the same stratum, with the smallest age difference (nearest neighbour), to a recipient in the passive sample when they would have been interviewed for the 6th time.

    Description

In 2024, around **** percent of the male population and **** percent of the female population aged 15 years and above in Japan were in the workforce nationally. The labor force participation rate among women reached the highest share since 1973. Female employment rate Japan’s employment rate, the share of people who are employed among the total population aged 15 years and above, rose to **** percent in the same year. It was mainly a higher share of ***** in employment that contributed to the overall increase in the employment rate in 2024. Despite the female employment rate reaching an all-time high, a significantly larger share of women, over **** of female employees, were in non-regular employment, such as part-time and temporary work. Distinctive work patterns of women shaped by Japan’s labor market and corporate culture are one of the reasons for its gender gap when it comes to equal economic participation. Women’s work patterns One of these work patterns is the M-shaped curve of female labor participation. The curve reflects the trend that female labor force participation peaks in the age group of ** to **-year-olds and then falls, as women drop out of the workforce upon life events such as marriage and childbirth, only to reenter the workforce at a later stage. This curve has gradually flattened in recent years, as fewer women left the workforce in their ********. However, the so-called L-shaped curve of women in regular employment suggests that instead, fewer women stay in regular employment. The percentage of women working in regular full-time jobs peaks in the age bracket of ** to **-year-olds and then declines steadily. This makes women less likely to enter leadership positions.

    Measurement technique
The labor force participation rate is calculated by expressing the number of persons in the labor force as a percentage of the population of a given age group. The labor force is the sum of the number of persons employed and the number of unemployed. Labor force surveys are typically the preferred source of information for determining the labor force participation rate. Such surveys can be designed to cover virtually the entire noninstitutional population of a given country, all branches of economic activity, all sectors of the economy and all categories of workers, including the self-employed, contributing (unpaid) family workers, casual workers and multiple jobholders. In addition, such surveys generally provide an opportunity for the simultaneous measurement of the employed, the unemployed and persons outside the labor force in a coherent framework. Population censuses are another major source of data on the labor force and its components. The labor force participation rates obtained from population censuses, however, tend to be lower, as the vastness of the census operation inhibits the recruitment of trained interviewers and does not typically allow for detailed probing on the labor market activities of the respondents. The series is part of the "ILO modeled estimates database," including nationally reported observations and imputed data for countries with missing data, primarily to capture regional and global trends with consistent country coverage. Country-reported microdata is based mainly on nationally representative labor force surveys, with other sources (e.g., household surveys and population censuses) considering differences in the data source, the scope of coverage, methodology, and other country-specific factors. Country analysis requires caution where limited nationally reported data are available. A series of models are also applied to impute missing observations and make projections. However, imputed observations are not based on national data, are subject to high uncertainty, and should not be used for country comparisons or rankings.
