The Health Survey for England is an annual survey of the health of the population. It has an annually repeating core accompanied by different topic modules each year. Time-series dataset of the demographic characteristics of the UK ethnic minority populations and religious groups up to 2006, to study ethnic and religious demographic diversity and its impact upon future population size, age-structure and the ethnic and religious composition of the UK population. This dataset is compiled from various existing data sources: 2001 Census, Labour Force Survey (LFS) and International Passenger Survey (IPS) data. In the absence of vital statistics by ethnic groups, indirect methods were used to estimate vital rates, including the ‘Own Child’ method applied to LFS household data to derive fertility estimates of ethnic and religious groups. Building on previous work, fertility rates of ethnic groups were produced up to 2006, distinguishing between UK-born and foreign-born populations. Migration rates were based on ONS International Migration Statistics (using IPS data), LFS and census data and projected on various assumptions. The results served population projections to mid-century and beyond of the main ethnic minority populations, including mixed populations, and using cohort-component methods. Furthermore, estimates of fertility rates for the major religious (and non-religious) groups were produced. Datasets include: (1) Calculated fertility estimates for all women aged 15 to 49 in the UK, by 5 years age group, by ethnic group, religion and place of birth (UK/non-UK), based on LFS data; (2) Data on mixed children by ethnic group of the mother; (3) Data on country of birth by ethnic group (all populations); (4) Data on immigration flow by country of origin. This project aims to analyse ethnic and religious demographic diversity, to investigate the potential for convergence of trends over time and its impact upon future population size, age-structure and the ethnic and religious composition of the UK population. Existing statistical sources (especially the 2001 Census, the Labour Force Survey (LFS) and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Longitudinal Survey) will be used to produce time-series of the demographic characteristics of the ethnic minority populations and religious groups up to 2006. The Centre on the Dynamics of Ethnicity (CoDE), led by the University of Manchester with the Universities of St Andrews, Sussex, Glasgow, Edinburgh, LSE, Goldsmiths, King's College London and Manchester Metropolitan University, designed and carried out the Evidence for Equality National Survey (EVENS), with Ipsos as the survey partner. EVENS documents the lives of ethnic and religious minorities in Britain during the coronavirus pandemic and is, to date, the largest and most comprehensive survey to do so.EVENS used online and telephone survey modes, multiple languages, and a suite of recruitment strategies to reach the target audience. Words of Colour coordinated the recruitment strategies to direct participants to the survey, and partnerships with 13 voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations[1] helped to recruit participants for the survey.The ambition of EVENS was to better represent ethnic and religious minorities compared to existing data sources regarding the range and diversity of represented minority population groups and the topic coverage. Thus, the EVENS survey used an 'open' survey approach, which requires participants to opt-in to the survey instead of probability-based approaches that invite individuals to participate following their identification within a pre-defined sampling frame. This 'open' approach sought to overcome some of the limitations of probability-based methods in order to reach a large number and diverse mix of people from religious and ethnic minorities.EVENS included a wide range of research and policy questions, including education, employment and economic well-being, housing, social, cultural and political participation, health, and experiences of racism and discrimination, particularly with respect to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Crucially, EVENS covered a full range of racial, ethnic and religious groups, including those often unrepresented in such work (such as Chinese, Jewish and Traveller groups), resulting in the participation of 14,215 participants, including 9,702 ethnic minority participants and a general population sample of 4,513, composed of White people who classified themselves as English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish, and British. This publication compiles statistics from data sources across the Criminal Justice System (CJS), to provide a combined perspective on the typical experiences of different ethnic groups. No causative links can be drawn from these summary statistics. For the majority of the report no controls have been applied for other characteristics of ethnic groups (such as average income, geography, offence mix or offender history), so it is not possible to determine what proportion of differences identified in this report are directly attributable to ethnicity. Differences observed may indicate areas worth further investigation, but should not be taken as evidence of bias or as direct effects of ethnicity.
In general, minority ethnic groups appear to be over-represented at many stages throughout the CJS compared with the White ethnic group. The greatest disparity appears at the point of stop and search, arrests, custodial sentencing and prison population. Among minority ethnic groups, Black individuals were often the most over-represented. Outcomes for minority ethnic children are often more pronounced at various points of the CJS. Differences in outcomes between ethnic groups over time present a mixed picture, with disparity decreasing in some areas are and widening in others.

British Election Study Ethnic Minority Survey, 2010 is a distinct survey with a separate sample and fieldwork to that of the main BES. While the main BES survey is a source of robust data at the national level, it cannot provide substantial interview numbers for some subgroups. In particular it has not been possible to conduct a thorough investigation of the political views and behaviours of Britain's ethnic minority populations through the main survey alone. A boost of ethnic minority respondents was carried out as part of the 1997 BES (SN 3891) but nothing since that point. As a result of this the ESRC agreed to fund a survey of ethnic minorities to be conducted immediately after the 2010 general election. The primary focus was on the five main ethnic minority groups - people of Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Black Caribbean and Black African background. However, the research was intended to be complementary to the main BES and a large number of items are shared between the two surveys to enable comparative analysis. With an increasingly diverse, ageing population in Britain, this research seeks to investigate the complexities of retirement behaviour and pensions in relation to ethnicity. The main aims will include: examining the extent and nature of private pension saving among ethnic minorities; identifying differences in post-retirement incomes of various ethnic minority groups; analysing the disparity in terms of the labour market and demographic variables. It will also explore the attitudes and the key strategies used by ethnic minority groups in relation to retirement, and their attitudes to saving. Methodologically, the research project will incorporate a mixed methods approach - major existing datasets such as the Family Resources Survey, English Longitudinal Study of Ageing and Quarterly Labour Force Survey will identify differences in post-retirement incomes between ethnic minority groups. In addition focus groups and interviews will be conducted with individuals from ethnic minority groupings including Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Black Africans, Black Caribbeans and a white British control group. By investigating the current attitudes to, and patterns of saving among the ethnic minority working groups and pensioners the research will comment on the adequacy of current pension policy in addressing the needs of this particular sector of society. The research comprised of data from both large datasets such as the FRS and qualitative data derived from 15 focus groups of both male and female participants from ethnic minority backgrounds, aged between 25-75.
