    Description

ABSTRACT This article seeks to show two interconnected phenomena in China. The first is a historical process that took place in the past 40 years involving institutional and qualitative changes in the state-controlled portion of the Chinese economy. Such changes have brought about new and superior forms of economic planning, based on which a higher stage of development pattern has emerged. We call this new development pattern "New Projectment Economy" and it synthesizes a series of state capacities built over time. The second phenomenon relates to how the state capacities created in the past decades have allowed the country to show adaptive flexibility and rapid efficiency in the containment of Covid-19 crisis internally and thus explain China's successful response in the fight against the coronavirus. Such phenomena, pari passu, show China's potential and projection as an international political actor.

    Description

A Country Economic Memorandum (CEM) is a diagnostic instrument toanalyze key constraints to growth, support policy dialogue with the government, and inform engagement with different stakeholders. During February 2023 and March 2024, a CEM was conducted for Solomon Islands, titled ‘Solomon Islands: Country Economic Memorandum – Unlocking New Sources of Economic Growth’. The CEM examines key barriers to sustainable economic development, with a focus on challenges of economic geography, obstacles to private sector activity, and constraints in four key sectors with high growth potential (i.e., agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and labor mobility). The CEM provides actionable policy recommendations to help overcome the identified barriers and unlock new sources of economic growth.

    Description

This thesis explores the devastating economic consequences that a hypothetical World War III could have on the global economy. Unlike the previous world wars, this conflict would unfold in a highly globalized, digitally interconnected world—meaning the economic damage would be even more widespread and severe.Drawing from history, the paper analyzes past wars like World War I and II, highlighting how those events caused GDP contractions, hyperinflation, destruction of infrastructure, and long-term debt. It uses these precedents to build realistic scenarios for what could happen if WWIII breaks out today. The study models short-term disruptions like stock market crashes, currency collapse, and trade blockades; medium-term issues like mass unemployment and inflation; and long-term impacts such as technological regression and widespread economic stagnation. The thesis provides regional assessments as well—evaluating how countries like the U.S., China, and nations in Europe and the Global South would fare in different war scenarios, from limited conflicts to full-scale nuclear exchanges. It also discusses secondary effects like energy and food shortages, famine, and the collapse of consumer demand in non-essential sectors.Importantly, the paper doesn’t stop at doom and gloom. It outlines strategic policy responses such as emergency fiscal controls, global debt restructuring, a possible new Bretton Woods system, and a modern-day Marshall Plan to help rebuild economies post-war.In conclusion, the research emphasizes that preventing World War III is not just a matter of global peace, but an absolute economic necessity. Even the strongest economies could collapse, and recovery could take decades—if at all. The thesis serves as both a warning and a call for proactive international diplomacy, economic safeguards, and collective accountability.

The 2006 Second Edition TIGER/Line files are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the Census TIGER database. The geographic coverage for a single TIGER/Line file is a county or statistical equivalent entity, with the coverage area based on the latest available governmental unit boundaries. The Census TIGER database represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts. However, each county-based TIGER/Line file is designed to stand alone as an independent data set or the files can be combined to cover the whole Nation. The 2006 Second Edition TIGER/Line files consist of line segments representing physical features and governmental and statistical boundaries. This shapefile represents the County Economic Census for Luna County stored in the 2006 TIGER Second Edition dataset.

    Description

The State of Veracruz-Llave, commonly known as Veracruz, is the third-largest Mexican state in terms of population, with 7 million, but growing only 1.05 percent per year, which is below the national rate of 1.85 percent. The population of the state is predominantly urban (59 percent) and young (44 percent is 19 years old and younger). Veracruz's indigenous population is the third largest of any Mexican state, and represents close to 10 percent of the state total. Veracruz is one of the poorest states in Mexico. It still is the fifth-largest state in terms of GDP. There are four problems from an economic and social development point of view: (a) inadequate access to communications and public services in rural areas, (b) low productivity of the labor force, (c) low diversification of industries in the northern and southern regions of the state, and (d) lack of a coordinated strategy among government agencies. The following policies address these problems: 1. Develop a coordinated strategy, under the umbrella of the state's six-year development plan, which would support economic growth while improving the ability of the poor to participate in it. 2. Invest in physical capital such as roads and water. Roads are strategic for economic and social development of rural regions. Nevertheless, the authorities need to find a balance between providing overly costly infrastructure to villages, and providing too little, so that the residents have no access to the transport system. Shortage of water in rural areas seriously harms the well being of the population. 3. Invest in human capital, in particular, improve the provision of technical training to rural areas, and improve the quality and relevance of basic and secondary education. In the global economy, workers need the capacity to learn quickly and take advantage of current information and emerging technologies. 4. Analyze the labor market in Veracruz, with a study of its relationship with economic development. 5 . Create a strategic plan for economic development that emphasizes diversifying into high-value industries, including in the northern and southern regions. The state can do little for the oil sector except to lobby for the energy reform, since it is by constitution controlled at the federal level. World market conditions offer little hope for a major comeback in sugarcane and coffee.
