    Description

    Journals & Ranking

    An academic journal or research journal is a periodical publication in which research articles relating to a particular academic discipline is published, according to Wikipedia. Currently, there are more than 25,000 peer-reviewed journals that are indexed in citation index databases such as Scopus and Web of Science. These indexes are ranked on the basis of various metrics such as CiteScore, H-index, etc. The metrics are calculated from yearly citation data of the journal. A lot of efforts are given to make a metric that reflects the journal's quality.

    Journal Ranking Dataset

    This is a comprehensive dataset on the academic journals coving their metadata information as well as citation, metrics, and ranking information. Detailed data on their subject area is also given in this dataset. The dataset is collected from the following indexing databases: - Scimago Journal Ranking - Scopus - Web of Science Master Journal List

    The data is collected by scraping and then it was cleaned, details of which can be found in HERE.

    • Rank: Overall rank of journal (derived from sorted SJR index).

    • SJR-index: A citation index calculated by Scimago.

    This file contains metadata from the 40 most impactful journals in the field of distance education, selected through a rigorous bibliometric analysis using the SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) indicator provided by SCImago. Two main criteria guided the selection: the first targeted journals ranked in Q1 and Q2 in the specific category of "e-learning" within the social sciences and education area, highlighting publications that demonstrate high impact and relevance in the academic community according to the selected indicator. The second criterion was based on keyword searches in the journal titles, selecting those that include terms like e-learning, online, Distance Education, Technology Learning, Communications in Information, and Information Education and their variants (e.g., plural), also positioned in Q1 or Q2.

    The metadata, extracted from the Scopus database, covers publications from the period 2018 to 2022 and includes vital information such as document type, authors' names, article title, journal name, publication year, pages, volume, and issue number. Additionally, each article is identified by a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) and URLs for direct access to the full text online, along with abstracts and keywords. These elements together provide a comprehensive and accessible view of the articles, facilitating bibliometric analyses and related academic research.

    This compilation serves as an essential resource for researchers and educators interested in understanding the dynamics and development of the field of distance education, offering a solid foundation for future investigations and the formulation of evidence-based educational policies.

    Description

    Data set for the study published in the journal El Profesional de la información (vol. 29, num. 4) and devoted to the analysis of the creation or title changes of scientific journals in the information and documentation (ID) area in the period 2013-2018. Based on the total of 62 such journals identified through ISSN Portal and UlrichsWeb, the following are described: characteristic aspects such as country, language, type of publisher, and access model; presence in bibliographic databases, citations, or journal directories; survival and volume of articles published; annual number of citations to articles according to Google Scholar; thematic scope declared by the editors; and finally, the justification given by the editors for the change of title or the creation of a new journal. Among the main conclusions regarding newly created titles, the leading role of academic publishers in expanding national university systems and open-access titles stands out. In general, new publications generate few articles per year, have little presence in databases, and receive few citations. Title changes were found only in journals published by commercial publishers. In both cases, journals with a general thematic scope predominate and a significant number of journals did not justify their creation or change of title.

    Description

    This is a CSV file containing a listing of the top 60 articles published in the Journal of Digital Scholarship in the Humanities (JDSH, preciously LLC), as exported from the Altmetric Explorer tool on11 April 2017. The sheet has been manually annotated adding columns to indicate each article entry's corresponding License (column E) and Access Type (column F). License and Access Type data was crosschecked manually by accessing each article online individually. The file also contains data obtained from the Open Access Button API. The article DOIs as obtained from the Altmetric Explorer were run through the Open Access Button API on 15 May 2017 in order to discover if any of the published articles had open versions available. Any resulting links when available, were added to column O. Columns O and P also include additional information, when available, about the type of content available via the Open Access Button. Joe McArthur from the Open Access Button ran the first initial search for open surrogates of this dataset through the Open Access Button API. Ernesto Priego then manually crosschecked each entry and limited the final dataset to the top 60 articles (of 82). Please note that the Altmetric data for the JDSH is likely to have changed by now, though not too significantly. Altmetric scores have not been included in this file but the order of the entries correspond to the order in the data initially exported from the Altmetric Explorer (from most mentions to fiewer mentions, with a minimum of 1 mention). This dataset is part of the author and collaborator's ongoing research on open access and institutional repository uptake in the digital humanities. The data included in this file allows users to quickly quantify the number of JDSH articles published with open licenses, number of currently 'free', paywalled or open access articles. The data shared here also allows users to see which of the articles and/or their metadata (according to the Open Access Button API) have been deposited in institutional repositories. The data presented is the result of the specific methods employed to obtain the data. In this sense this data represents as much a testing of the technologies employed as of the actual articles' licensing and open availability. This means that data in columns L-P reflect the data available through the Open Access Button API at the moment of collection. It is perfectly possible that 'open surrogates' of the articles listed are available elsewhere through other methods. As indicated above data in columns E-F was obtained and added manually. Article DOI's were accessed manually from a computer browser outside/without access to university library networks, as the intention was to verify if any of the articles were available to the general public without university library network/subscription credentials.This deposit is part of a work in progress and is shared openly to document ongoing work and to encourage further discussion and analyses.

    This study estimates the effect of data sharing on the citations of academic articles, using journal policies as a natural experiment. We begin by examining 17 high-impact journals that have adopted the requirement that data from published articles be publicly posted. We match these 17 journals to 13 journals without policy changes and find that empirical articles published just before their change in editorial policy have citation rates with no statistically significant difference from those published shortly after the shift. We then ask whether this null result stems from poor compliance with data sharing policies, and use the data sharing policy changes as instrumental variables to examine more closely two leading journals in economics and political science with relatively strong enforcement of new data policies. We find that articles that make their data available receive 97 additional citations (estimate standard error of 34). We conclude that: a) authors who share data may be rewarded eventually with additional scholarly citations, and b) data-posting policies alone do not increase the impact of articles published in a journal unless those policies are enforced.

    Background This bibliometric analysis examines the top 50 most-cited articles on COVID-19 complications, offering insights into the multifaceted impact of the virus. Since its emergence in Wuhan in December 2019, COVID-19 has evolved into a global health crisis, with over 770 million confirmed cases and 6.9 million deaths as of September 2023. Initially recognized as a respiratory illness causing pneumonia and ARDS, its diverse complications extend to cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, renal, hematological, neurological, endocrinological, ophthalmological, hepatobiliary, and dermatological systems. Methods Identifying the top 50 articles from a pool of 5940 in Scopus, the analysis spans November 2019 to July 2021, employing terms related to COVID-19 and complications. Rigorous review criteria excluded non-relevant studies, basic science research, and animal models. The authors independently reviewed articles, considering factors like title, citations, publication year, journal, impact factor, authors, study details, and patient demographics. Results The focus is primarily on 2020 publications (96%), with all articles being open-access. Leading journals include The Lancet, NEJM, and JAMA, with prominent contributions from Internal Medicine (46.9%) and Pulmonary Medicine (14.5%). China played a major role (34.9%), followed by France and Belgium. Clinical features were the primary study topic (68%), often utilizing retrospective designs (24%). Among 22,477 patients analyzed, 54.8% were male, with the most common age group being 26–65 years (63.2%). Complications affected 13.9% of patients, with a recovery rate of 57.8%. Conclusion Analyzing these top-cited articles offers clinicians and researchers a comprehensive, timely understanding of influential COVID-19 literature. This approach uncovers attributes contributing to high citations and provides authors with valuable insights for crafting impactful research. As a strategic tool, this analysis facilitates staying updated and making meaningful contributions to the dynamic field of COVID-19 research. Methods A bibliometric analysis of the most cited articles about COVID-19 complications was conducted in July 2021 using all journals indexed in Elsevier’s Scopus and Thomas Reuter’s Web of Science from November 1, 2019 to July 1, 2021. All journals were selected for inclusion regardless of country of origin, language, medical speciality, or electronic availability of articles or abstracts. A total of 5940 articles were accessed, of which the top 50 most cited articles about COVID-19 and Complications of COVID-19 were selected through Scopus. Each article was reviewed for its appropriateness for inclusion. The articles were independently reviewed by three researchers (JRP, MAM and TS) (Table 1). Differences in opinion with regard to article inclusion were resolved by consensus. The inclusion criteria specified articles that were focused on COVID-19 and Complications of COVID-19. Articles were excluded if they did not relate to COVID-19 and or complications of COVID-19, Basic Science Research and studies using animal models or phantoms. Review articles, Viewpoints, Guidelines, Perspectives and Meta-analysis were also excluded from the top 50 most-cited articles (Table 1). The top 50 most-cited articles were compiled in a single database and the relevant data was extracted. The database included: Article Title, Scopus Citations, Year of Publication, Journal, Journal Impact Factor, Authors, Number of Authors, Department Affiliation, Number of Institutions, Country of Origin, Study Topic, Study Design, Sample Size, Open Access, Non-Original Articles, Patient/Participants Age, Gender, Symptoms, Signs, Co-morbidities, Complications, Imaging Modalities Used and outcome.

    This study consists of data files that code the data availability policies of top-20 academic journals in the fields of Business & Finance, Economics, International Relations, Political Science, and Sociology. Journals that were ranked as top-20 titles based on 2003-vintage ISI Impact Factor scores were coded on their data policies in 2003 and on their data policies in 2015. In addition, journals that were ranked as top-20 titles based on most recent ISI Impact Factor scores were likewise coded on their data polices in 2015. The included Stata .do file imports the contents of each of the Excel files, cleans and labels the data, and produces two tables: one comparing the data policies of 2003-vintage top-20 journals in 2003 those journals' policies in 2015, and one comparing the data policies of 2003-vintage top-20 journals in 2003 to the data policies of current top-20 journals in 2015.

    Abstract The objective of this work was to identify scientific journals that were discontinued in the Scientific Electronic Library Online Brazil Collection and to analyze the motivations expressed in the editorials. The methodology involved identifying the characteristics of the 75 journal titles, and the editorials of the year of discontinuation and the subsequent one were analyzed using the content analysis technique. The results show 75 journals from all areas of knowledge, 52 published editorials on the subject, from which 156 texts were identified. Scientific Electronic Library Online uses two categories of generic reasons: finished (40 titles), the titles have been changed, with 38 remaining at the base, and interrupted indexing (35 titles) that were taken off the base, but the volumes already indexed were maintained. In the finished category, five main motivations were identified: internationalization and / or international visibility (62.5%), modernization (5.0%), change of publishing entity (5.0%), change of publishing entity and internationalization (2.5%), absorbed by another journal (2.5%), unidentified motivations (22.5%). In the interrupted indexing category, we identified three main motivations: internationalization and or international visibility, partnership with an international commercial publisher (34.0%), delay in launching new issues (14.4%), against Scientific Electronic Library Online internationalization policy (2,9%), unidentified motivations (48.7%). The large number of reasons not identified in editorials shows the need to increase transparency in the management of journals. Internationalization, the main motivation found, promoted by Scientific Electronic Library Online criteria and seems to have been understood in several ways in the editorials. While the majority remained at the base, 12 titles that entered into partnerships with international commercial publishers were identified and left Scientific Electronic Library Online.

    John Ioannidis and co-authors [1] created a publicly available database of top-cited scientists in the world. This database, intended to address the misuse of citation metrics, has generated a lot of interest among the scientific community, institutions, and media. Many institutions used this as a yardstick to assess the quality of researchers. At the same time, some people look at this list with skepticism citing problems with the methodology used. Two separate databases are created based on career-long and, single recent year impact. This database is created using Scopus data from Elsevier[1-3]. The Scientists included in this database are classified into 22 scientific fields and 174 sub-fields. The parameters considered for this analysis are total citations from 1996 to 2022 (nc9622), h index in 2022 (h22), c-score, and world rank based on c-score (Rank ns). Citations without self-cites are considered in all cases (indicated as ns). In the case of a single-year case, citations during 2022 (nc2222) instead of Nc9622 are considered.

    To evaluate the robustness of c-score-based ranking, I have done a detailed analysis of the matrix parameters of the last 25 years (1998-2022) of Nobel laureates of Physics, chemistry, and medicine, and compared them with the top 100 rank holders in the list. The latest career-long and single-year-based databases (2022) were used for this analysis. The details of the analysis are presented below: Though the article says the selection is based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a percentile rank of 2% or above in the sub-field, the actual career-based ranking list has 204644 names[1]. The single-year database contains 210199 names. So, the list published contains ~ the top 4% of scientists. In the career-based rank list, for the person with the lowest rank of 4809825, the nc9622, h22, and c-score were 41, 3, and 1.3632, respectively. Whereas for the person with the No.1 rank in the list, the nc9622, h22, and c-score were 345061, 264, and 5.5927, respectively. Three people on the list had less than 100 citations during 96-2022, 1155 people had an h22 less than 10, and 6 people had a C-score less than 2.
    In the single year-based rank list, for the person with the lowest rank (6547764), the nc2222, h22, and c-score were 1, 1, and 0. 6, respectively. Whereas for the person with the No.1 rank, the nc9622, h22, and c-score were 34582, 68, and 5.3368, respectively. 4463 people on the list had less than 100 citations in 2022, 71512 people had an h22 less than 10, and 313 people had a C-score less than 2. The entry of many authors having single digit H index and a very meager total number of citations indicates serious shortcomings of the c-score-based ranking methodology. These results indicate shortcomings in the ranking methodology.

    This project was about analyzing policies of two thousand journals within the framework of eight TOP standards:
    data citation, transparency of data, material, code and design and analysis, replication, plan and study pre-registration,
    and two effective interventions: “Registered reports” and “Open science badges”.

    # MATERIALS & METHODS
    We downloaded the TOP Factor (v33, 2022-08-29 3:12 PM) metric from the https://osf.io/kgnva/files/osfstorage/5e13502257341901c3805317
    website and analyzed its content with an in-house R script (in this repo):

    2) SCRIPT: Figure2a_b_TOP_impl_journal_statistist_0_1_piechart_barplot.R
    In order to get statistics about implementation of the TOP guidelines across discipline-specific journals,
    we extracted information about journal’s disciplines from the Scopus content database.
    We downloaded SCOPUS content coverage from the https://www.elsevier.com/solutions/scopus/how-scopus-works/content?dgcid=RN_AGCM_Sourced_300005030 (existJuly2022.xlsx)
    and used the first Sheet.
    We identified match between those 2 tables:

    P values represent a widely used, but pervasively misunderstood and fiercely contested method of scientific inference. Display items, such as figures and tables, often containing the main results, are an important source of P values. We conducted a survey comparing the overall use of P values and the occurrence of significant P values in display items of a sample of articles in the three top multidisciplinary journals (Nature, Science, PNAS) in 2017 and, respectively, in 1997. We also examined the reporting of multiplicity corrections and its potential influence on the proportion of statistically significant P values. Our findings demonstrated substantial and growing reliance on P values in display items, with increases of 2.5 to 14.5 times in 2017 compared to 1997. The overwhelming majority of P values (94%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 92% to 96%) were statistically significant. Methods to adjust for multiplicity were almost non-existent in 1997, but reported in many articles relying on P values in 2017 (Nature 68%, Science 48%, PNAS 38%). In their absence, almost all reported P values were statistically significant (98%, 95% CI 96% to 99%). Conversely, when any multiplicity corrections were described, 88% (95% CI 82% to 93%) of reported P values were statistically significant. Use of Bayesian methods was scant (2.5%) and rarely (0.7%) articles relied exclusively on Bayesian statistics. Overall, wider appreciation of the need for multiplicity corrections is a welcome evolution, but the rapid growth of reliance on P values and implausibly high rates of reported statistical significance are worrisome.

Journals & Ranking

An academic journal or research journal is a periodical publication in which research articles relating to a particular academic discipline is published, according to Wikipedia. Currently, there are more than 25,000 peer-reviewed journals that are indexed in citation index databases such as Scopus and Web of Science. These indexes are ranked on the basis of various metrics such as CiteScore, H-index, etc. The metrics are calculated from yearly citation data of the journal. A lot of efforts are given to make a metric that reflects the journal's quality.

Journal Ranking Dataset

This is a comprehensive dataset on the academic journals coving their metadata information as well as citation, metrics, and ranking information. Detailed data on their subject area is also given in this dataset. The dataset is collected from the following indexing databases: - Scimago Journal Ranking - Scopus - Web of Science Master Journal List

The data is collected by scraping and then it was cleaned, details of which can be found in HERE.
