Links between occupations are indicated by arrows The size of a node indicates the relative involvement in that occupational sector (larger node means more people are involved). The direction of the arrows indicates the priority of ranking. Thus an arrow into an occupation indicates that the occupation was ranked lower than the occupation the arrow came from. The thickness of the arrows corresponds to the proportion of households being engaged in the, by themselves, higher ranked occupation that are also engaged in the lower ranked occupation. The proportion of the node that is shaded represents the proportion of people that ranked that occupation as a primary occupation.

Mobile accounts for approximately half of web traffic worldwide. In the last quarter of 2024, mobile devices (excluding tablets) generated 62.54 percent of global website traffic. Mobiles and smartphones consistently hoovered around the 50 percent mark since the beginning of 2017, before surpassing it in 2020. Mobile traffic Due to low infrastructure and financial restraints, many emerging digital markets skipped the desktop internet phase entirely and moved straight onto mobile internet via smartphone and tablet devices. India is a prime example of a market with a significant mobile-first online population. Other countries with a significant share of mobile internet traffic include Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya. In most African markets, mobile accounts for more than half of the web traffic. By contrast, mobile only makes up around 45.49 percent of online traffic in the United States. According to the Information Community for the Assessment of the Circulation of Media (IVW), the average paid circulation of weekly papers was around **** million copies in 2023. This was a slight decrease compared with the previous year and back to the level of 2021. Since 1995, however, the general trend has shown a decrease in the number of weekly papers circulated. Are newspapers dying out? It is not just in Germany that newspaper sales are decreasing, the same is true in the U.S. which has seen a consistent decrease since 2010. Life for most people is relatively fast-paced, and so perhaps sitting down with a broadsheet and coffee is no longer conducive to the lifestyles that people lead. A good share, however, still trust the media to provide them with reliable information, so media companies must find new formats to do so. A popular option is to read the newspaper online, most newspaper companies now offer a subscription system in which the subscribers pay a fixed fee and can access exclusive newspaper content on the internet. In the second quarter of 2024, the New York Times Media Group made around ****** million U.S. dollars from subscriptions alone, showing that there is room for lucrative profits in the sector. When people in Germany were asked about their online newspaper subscription habits, around ** percent of respondents stated that they actually took out additional news subscriptions. This perhaps indicates there is still a bright future for newspapers and journalism, but it will just have to take on a new form. Social media news For some, social media is a convenient alternative method to access the news. There is still a large discrepancy, however, between countries that favor social media as a news source and those that do not. In countries such as Kenya, Nigeria and Thailand, ** percent or more of adults used social media platforms to keep themselves apprised of current events; in Germany, this figure was only ** percent in 2024. Despite this, around ** percent of 16- to 29-year-olds in Germany said that social networks gave them the quickest access to updates about what is going on in the world. ** percent of them believed that it gave them the ability to influence politics. Therefore, although it may appear that Germans are not reliant on social media for the news, perhaps the younger generations will continue to turn towards online sources for their news consumption. Although modern methods of obtaining the news may be more convenient, there are constant questions about the trustworthiness of these sources because it is often unclear where the information comes from. As AI becomes more developed and intelligent, it is more difficult to separate reliable from unreliable information on social media.
As of February 2025, Nigeria had 107 million internet users - the highest number reported all over Africa. Meanwhile, Egypt ranked second with over 96 million users. The majority of web traffic in leading digital markets in Africa originated from mobile devices - in Nigeria, one of the countries with the largest number of internet users worldwide, 86.2 percent of web traffic was generated via smartphones and roughly 13.3 percent via PC devices. This is due in part to the fact that mobile connections are much cheaper and do not require the infrastructure that is needed for traditional desktop PCs with fixed-line internet connections. Anticipating remarkable growth: Africa's internet user surge and projected milestones The projected trend for Africa indicates a consistent rise in internet users from 2024 to 2029. It will have a collective addition of 337.3 million users (equivalent to a growth of 51.79 percent). Following fifteen successive years of growth, the user count is anticipated to reach a record high of 1.1 billion by 2029. Furthermore, the online penetration rate on the continent was 43 percent – which was below the global average, measured at around 68 percent. Moreover, Morocco boasted an impressive internet penetration of about 91 percent, securing its position as Africa's foremost country. Libya held the second position with a penetration rate of approximately 88 percent, followed closely by Seychelles at around 86.7 percent.
