The secondary school performance tables show:

    • attainment results for pupils at the end of key stage 4
    • key stage 2 to 4 progress measures in English and mathematics
    • information showing how the performance of deprived pupils compares against other pupils in the school
    • information which highlights any differences in the performance of low-attaining pupils, high-attaining pupils, and pupils performing at expected levels

Additional data on schools will be made available, which includes information on the expenditure of each maintained school open for the full 2011 to 2012 financial year. The expenditure data will take the form of spend-per-pupil statistics for a wide range of categories, including: funding and income, education staff spend and learning resources and curriculum spend.

The school-spend data will also contain information about the school (such as the proportion of pupils in the school eligible for free school meals), headline key stage 4 performance data and comparisons against the local authority and national averages, the numbers of teachers, teaching assistants and other school staff.

It also provides the pupil-to-teacher ratio and the mean gross salary of full-time teachers, information on the characteristics of the pupils attending the school and pupil absence data for each school.

The ICOSS (Impact of Competition on Secondary Schools) study, based in the Open University's Centre for Educational Policy and Management, is investigating the impact of competitive pressures on secondary schools in England. The Survey on School Competition, 1992-1997 is part of the study.
Secondary school headteachers from six local education authority (LEA) areas were surveyed on their perceptions of the degree of competition facing their school and its impact on pupil recruitment and school budgets since 1992, when national league tables of examination results were first published. The schools contacted comprised all grant-maintained (GM) and LEA maintained secondary schools (excepting special schools) in the six LEA areas.
LEAs were selected in order to include in the database a wide range of school types so as to provide an adequate basis for generalisation of results. The LEAs include county and metropolitan authorities to give urban and rural schools and a diversity of socio-economic backgrounds and school systems (i.e. a selective system and a concentration of GM schools in some of the LEA areas).
The survey was intended to give headteachers the opportunity to comment on the effects of educational policies which have had the aim of creating a more competitive climate and to contribute to the broader aims of the ICOSS study.
Further information about the ICOSS study may be found on the website:
    http://soe.open.ac.uk/CEPAM/research/ICOSS/index.htm .
    Main Topics:

The topics covered included: perceptions of competitive pressures, basic information about school, staffing and organisation, setting practices and curriculum options. Closed-ended questions also covered changes in the emphasis given to examinations, setting/banding and GCSE option choices. A section for free comment was also included.

Last update: April 2013 Was added to StatsWales: April 2013 Source: Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) Contact: post16ed.stats@wales.gsi.gov.uk The information in this table is taken from Performance Indicators in Higher Education in the UK available on the HESA web-site at www.hesa.ac.uk/pi. A Guide to Performance Indicators in Higher Education is also available at this web-site. The indicators are designed to provide reliable information on the nature and performance of the higher education sector in the UK. The performance indicators broadly cover access to higher education, non-continuation rates and outcomes. Indicators relate to higher education institutions in the individual countries of the UK. The Performance Indicators Steering Group (PISG) has led the development of these indicators. Members are drawn from the four higher education funding bodies for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (HEFCE, SHEFC, HEFCW, DEL); the Department for Education and Skills and other government departments, the Higher Education Statistics Agency, and universities and colleges through their representative bodies (Universities UK and SCOP) Since 2002/03 HESA has published the Performance Indicators on behalf of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) who published them previously. A number of changes were introduced for the 2002/03 publication; further details can be found at www.hesa.ac.uk/pi . The access indicators relate to students starting in 2004/05; the indicators of non-continuation (students who do not continue after their first year) and of non-completion (students who drop out and do not resume later or transfer elsewhere) relate to the cohort starting in 2003/04. The disability indicator covers all students, not just entrants, on undergraduate programmes in 2004/05. WIDENING ACCESS: PERCENTAGE OF YOUNG FIRST DEGREE ENTRANTS FROM STATE SCHOOLS OR COLLEGES. School type is taken from previous institution attended. All schools or colleges that are not denoted ‘independent’ are assumed to be state schools. This means that students from sixth-form or further education colleges, for example, are included as being from state schools.
