Where and when do French people read? It appears that most of people in France read at home. They were 97 percent to state that they usually read in the place they live. However, a lot of respondents also read during long journeys, during a flight or in a train. Reading appears to be one of the favorite leisure activities of people in France. Books seem to have a lot of benefits. Reading is a hobby, but French people also perceive it as a way to discover and learn new things. This, might explain why the most popular reading genre in the country was DIY, leisure and lifestyle books.

Total leisure time measures the average amount of time people spend on socializing, sports and exercise, games and puzzles, reading, television, music, radio and other recreational activities. These data represent IBISWorld estimates based on hours worked per day by all Canadians. Underlying population and labour force participation data is sourced from Statistics Canada.
The General Social Survey (GSS) program gathers data on social subjects in order to monitor changes in the living conditions and well being of Canadians over time and to provide immediate information on specific social policy issues of current or emerging interest. Cycle 19 of the GSS is the fourth cycle dedicated to the topic of time use - previous cycles were carried out in 1986, 1992 and 1998.
Although the 1978 survey contains some of the same data elements as the previous surveys, comparisons may be difficult. The reference period has changed from the 1975 survey and as the survey title suggests, the emphasis has been placed on the reading habits of Canadians. In addition, the language characteristics of the respondent have been expanded to include the language of the questionnaire used, the language first learned and still understood, language(s) read and language most often spoken at home. A description of the respondent's formal education was added due to its perceived impact on reading as a leisure activity. The respondent's reading habits were explored in considerable detail including questions on the books, magazines and newspapers read by the respondent. A section soliciting the opinions and motivating factors influencing the respondent's reading as a leisure activity was added to the 1978 survey.
