    Content TypeHosted Feature Layer
DescriptionNSW Local Government Area is a dataset within the Administrative Boundaries Theme (FSDF). It depicts polygons of gazetted boundaries defining the Local Government Area. It contains all of the cadastral line data or topographic features which are used to define the boundaries between adjoining shires, municipalities, cities (Local Government Act) and the unincorporated areas of NSW.

The dataset also contains Council Names, ABS Codes, Ito Codes, Vg Codes, and Wb Codes. Any changes that occur to the dataset should have a reference in the authority of reference feature class in the Land Parcel and Property.

Features are positioned in topological alignment within the extents of the land parcel and property polygons for each Local Government Area and are held in alignment, including changes resulting cadastral maintenance and upgrades.

AccuracyThe dataset maintains a positional relationship to, and alignment with, the Lot and Property digital datasets. This dataset was captured by digitising the best available cadastral mapping at a variety of scales and accuracies, ranging from 1:500 to 1:250 000 according to the National Mapping Council of Australia, Standards of Map Accuracy (1975). Therefore, the position of the feature instance will be within 0.5mm at map scale for 90% of the well-defined points. That is, 1:500 = 0.25m, 1:2000 = 1m, 1:4000 = 2m, 1:25000 = 12.5m, 1:50000 = 25m and 1:100000 = 50m. A program of positional upgrade (accuracy improvement) is currently underway. A program to upgrade the spatial location and accuracy of data is ongoing.

    Abstract

This dataset and its metadata statement were supplied to the Bioregional Assessment Programme by a third party and are presented here as originally supplied.

Local Land Services brings together agricultural production advice, biosecurity, natural resource management and emergency management into a single organisation. Department of Primary Industries' extension arm, Catchment Management Authorities (CMA) and Livestock Health and Pest Authorities (LHPA).

Eleven LLS regions, managed by 11 local boards cover NSW: Central Tablelands, Central West, Greater Sydney, Hunter, Murray, North Coast, Northern Tablelands, North West, Riverina, South East and Western regions.

Local Land Services regional boundaries were determined in 2013 following extensive community consultation. Each LLS region is a collation of Local Government Areas (LGA), with four exceptions where the LGA is split across two LLS regions. Those exceptions occur in Bogan, Carrathool, Hay and Jerilderie local council areas. www.lls.nsw.gov.au/our-regions/whats-my-region

LLS boundaries supercede the former CMA boundaries

LLS is an amalgamation of agricultural production advice, biosecurity, natural resource management and emergency management into a single organisation.

Initial source - Digitised from boundaries, shown on cronaflex master positives of NSW Department of Lands medium and large scale Standard Cadastral Map Series. These boundaries were derived from original gazetted descriptions. Subsequent digital data updated from Gazetted notifications

Local Government Areas - An area of contiguous land, the boundaries of which have been determined by the Governor by proclamation in the Government Gazette, which defines an area to be administered by a local government council

    Description

Please note this dataset is the most recent version of the Administrative Boundaries (AB). For previous versions of the AB please go to this url: https://data.gov.au/dataset/ds-dga-b4ad5702-ea2b-4f04-833c-d0229bfd689e/details?q=previous

Geoscape Administrative Boundaries is Australia’s most comprehensive national collection of boundaries, including government, statistical and electoral boundaries. It is built and maintained by Geoscape Australia using authoritative government data. Further information about contributors to Administrative Boundaries is available here.

This dataset comprises seven Geoscape products:

    • Localities
    • Local Government Areas (LGAs)
    • Wards
    • Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Boundaries
    • Electoral Boundaries
    • State Boundaries and
    • Town Points

Updated versions of Administrative Boundaries are published on a quarterly basis.

Users have the option to download datasets with feature coordinates referencing either GDA94 or GDA2020 datums.

Notable changes in the May 2025 release

    • Victorian Wards have seen almost half of the dataset change now reflecting the boundaries from the 2024 subdivision review. https://www.vec.vic.gov.au/electoral-boundaries/council-reviews/ subdivision-reviews.

      • There have been spatial changes (area) greater than 1 km2 to 66 wards in Victoria.
    • One new locality ‘Kenwick Island’ has been added to the local Government area ‘Mackay Regional’ in Queensland.

      • There have been spatial changes(area) greater than 1 km2 to the local government areas 'Burke Shire' and 'Mount Isa City' in Queensland.
    • There have been spatial changes(area) greater than 1 km2 to the localities ‘Nicholson’, ‘Lawn Hill’ and ‘Coral Sea’ in Queensland and ‘Calguna’, ‘Israelite Bay’ and ‘Balladonia’ in Western Australia.

    • An update to the NT Commonwealth Electoral Boundaries has been applied to reflect the redistribution of the boundaries gazetted on 4 March 2025.

    • Geoscape has become aware that the DATE_CREATED and DATE_RETIRED attributes in the commonwealth_electoral_polygon MapInfo TAB tables were incorrectly ordered and did not match the product data model. These attributes have been re-ordered to match the data model for the May 2025 release.

IMPORTANT NOTE: correction of issues with the 22 November 2022 release

    • On 28 November 2022, the Administrative Boundaries dataset originally released on 22 November 2022 was amended and re-uploaded after Geoscape identified some issues with the original data for 'Electoral Boundaries'.
    • As a result of the error, some shapefiles were published in 3D rather than 2D, which may affect some users when importing data into GIS applications.
    • The error affected the Electoral Boundaries dataset, specifically the Commonwealth boundary data for Victoria and Western Australia, including 'All States'.
    • Only the ESRI Shapefile formats were affected (both GDA94 and GDA2020). The MapInfo TAB format was not affected.
    • Because the datasets are zipped into a single file, once the error was fixed by Geoscape all of Administrative Boundaries shapefiles had to be re-uploaded, rather than only the affected files.
    • If you downloaded either of the two Administrative Boundary ESRI Shapefiles between 22 November and 28 November 2022 and plan to use the Electoral Boundary component, you are advised to download the revised version dated 28 November 2022. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Further information on Administrative Boundaries, including FAQs on the data, is available here or through Geoscape Australia’s network of partners. They provide a range of commercial products based on Administrative Boundaries, including software solutions, consultancy and support.

Note: On 1 October 2020, PSMA Australia Limited began trading as Geoscape Australia.

The Australian Government has negotiated the release of Administrative Boundaries to the whole economy under an open CCBY 4.0 licence.

Users must only use the data in ways that are consistent with the Australian Privacy Principles issued under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

Users must also note the following attribution requirements:

Preferred attribution for the Licensed Material:

What to Expect When You Download Administrative Boundaries

Administrative Boundaries is large dataset (around 1.5GB unpacked), made up of seven themes each containing multiple layers.

Users are advised to read the technical documentation including the product change notices and the individual product descriptions before downloading and using the product.

Please note this dataset is the most recent version of the Administrative Boundaries (AB). For previous versions of the AB please go to this url: https://data.gov.au/dataset/ds-dga-b4ad5702-ea2b-4f04-833c-d0229bfd689e/details?q=previous

    Coffs Harbour
    Description

This dataset represents fine-scale floristic vegetation mapping within the Coffs Harbour Local Government Area. Vegetation has been categorized into communities, classes and formations, with the composition of respective vegetation species identified. Mapping was conducted by vegetation mapping ‘experts’ (NSW Department of Environment and Heritage) between September 2009 and April 2012, and was based on 3-D PLANAR modelling, aerial photography interpretation, field floristic assessment, and PATN statistical analysis.

A nominal scale of use of 1:5,000 is recommended for dataset display and interpretation, as linework digitising was based on ADS40 (50cm resolution) and minimum polygon size of 0.2 ha, and was captured at screen scale of between 1:1000 and 1:1500.

The map is not to be used at a property level scale or for development applications where a scale of 1:1200 or greater may be required to determine the level variation of vegetation within a property. Furthermore, DAs still need to undergo the rigour of planning laws in NSW including local assessment of impacts on flora and fauna.

Overall thematic accuracy is reported at 66% (independent assessment), with OEH reviewed overall accuracy being 77% weighted by total area of each vegetation class.

The dataset is to be considered a standalone layer.

    Description

Vegetation mapping for Wyong Local Government Area undertaken by Stephen Bell and Colin Driscoll in 2008. A revision of existing mapping for Wyong LGA completed in 1999 and 2002. Extensive and detailed data collection and API has been undertaken in Olney, Ourimbah and Wyong State Forests and used to produce a new vegetation map broadly based on the NPWS (2000) classification scheme. In addition, previous mapping projects, including those for Jilliby State Conservation Area, have been incorporated with new API of unmapped areas to produce a single seamless vegetation layer for western Wyong, covering 50 native vegetation map units. VIS_ID 3807\r \r Map footprint supplied only. Contact Central Coast Council for access to the vegetation map.

    Description

Ward boundaries within the City of Sydney local government area (LGA) have shifted many times, dramatically affecting the number and character of people entitled to vote. The redrawing of ward boundaries was largely undertaken to redress imbalances as the demographic makeup of the City changed over time. The polygon layer represents the boundaries of each ward and table lists the corresponding assessment books. This data is part of the historic ward boundaries story map.

    Description

Vegetation map of Wyong Local Government Area - Extant Distribution. Vegetation survey, analysis and mapping has been undertaken for Wyong LGA on the Central Coast of NSW. Cluster analysis of 444 survey plots (0.04 ha in size) revealed notable differences in the vegetation of the area, governed principally by drainage, soil type and elevation. Forty-three (43) vegetation communities have been defined, and the composition, distribution and conservation status for each of these is examined, and placed into context with other vegetation classifications completed in the region over recent years. The report details a classification of the natural vegetation of Wyong Shire, and presents extant and pre-1750 maps for the area showing the distribution of each defined community. VIS_ID 738

    Description

The Department of Planning provides support to Local Government to enable evidence-based planning decisions. Biodiversity and Conservation Division collaborated with Cessnock City Council in 2021-2022 to deliver environmental map layers (Environmental Lands Study) that facilitate council’s review of their Local Environment Plan. This dataset is one of those and is a consolidated vegetation mosaic refined by an accurate and fine scale Woody Non-woody (WNW) layer to enhance the spatial accuracy of the data. An audit of existing vegetation products was conducted and 11 datasets were selected for inclusion based upon their quality, currency and level of supporting validation information. Vegetation units from all 11 datasets were translated to the Eastern NSW PCT Classification (Connolly et al., 2021) that is publicly available as of June 2022. The vegetation mosaic contains all original and legacy information from each of the 11 contributing datasets where that information existed. The vegetation mosaic also contains the original translations to the pre-June 2022 PCT's that was undertaken by Cockerill et al. (2013) Both classifications are now linked to DPE’s full floristic survey data (734 plots) that occur within the Cessnock LGA. These are referenced to ground truth data that also have associated Threatened Ecological Communities assigned.
