    Description

The NZ Elevation Survey Index dataset provides an index to all LiDAR derived elevation datasets found on the LINZ Data Service. Each record in the dataset provides both a geometry of the extent of the elevation survey, as well as useful metadata attributes. The extents are derived from the maximum extent of DEM and DSM coverage and consist of full NZTopo50 1k tiles, even where a tile is only partially covered with data. These extents only provide a rough indication of corresponding point cloud coverage which can be quite different for some elevation surveys.

Please refer to the NZ Aerial Surveys Data Dictionary for detailed metadata and information about this dataset.

The elevation data referenced by this dataset is available on the LINZ Data Service.

LINZ Data Service (LDS) Item Page - https://data.linz.govt.nz/layer/101290-nz-building-outlines/This dataset provides current outlines of buildings within mainland New Zealand captured from the latest aerial imagery.A building outline is a 2D representation of the roof outline of a building which has been classified from LINZ aerial imagery using a combination of automated and manual processes to extract and refine a building roof outline.Building outlines observed in aerial imagery larger than or equal to 10 square meters are captured in this dataset, and may include structures such as garages and large sheds.Data VintageThis dataset shows the most recent set of building outlines extracted from the LINZ aerial imagery available on the LINZ Data Service.Current coverage includes areas in Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu-Whanganui, Wellington, Tasman, Taranaki, West Coast, Marlborough, Canterbury, Southland and Otago. This dataset will be updated and expanded as new aerial imagery becomes available.Since aerial imagery is flown only every few years in each region of the country, building outlines only reflect those buildings observed at the date of this aerial imagery capture, and may not reflect buildings constructed after this time period. Please refer to the NZ Building Outlines Data Dictionary for detailed metadata and information about this dataset.Related Building Outlines DataNZ Building Outlines (All Sources) - contains all combinations of building outlines from multiple years of imagery that have existed since the beginning of this dataset, and the dates when each building outline existed in the associated aerial imagery.NZ Building Outlines Lifecycle - is related to the dataset above and stores the relationship between building outlines when one building is split into two or more building outlines, or when multiple building outlines are merged into a single outline. If you have any questions, please contact us at maps@linz.govt.nzPlease note: This layer is updated (if updates are available) daily at 12:00 NZST (23:00 UTC) from the LINZ Data Service. NZ Property Hybrid (pilot) provides the best available representation of property boundaries in New Zealand.

Three data sources have been combined to create this hybrid property boundaries layer:

    • Rating Units - These are the main data source, taken from the NZ Properties: Unit of Property layer. This layer uses District Valuation Roll data to identify rated properties and aggregates spatialised titles and untitled land associated with a Rating Unit into a single property.
    • Titles - Where there are no spatialised rating units, spatialised titles from the NZ Property Titles layer are included, if they are available.
    • Parcels – Where there are no rating units or spatialised titles, parcels from the NZ Primary Parcels layer are used to fill the in the remaining gaps.

NZ Property Hybrid (pilot) is updated on a weekly basis. For more information please refer to the NZ Property Hybrid (pilot) Data Dictionary

Please note: NZ Property Hybrid (pilot) is an interim solution while work continues to develop the NZ Properties: Unit of Property layer. For more information about NZ Properties: Unit of Property, please see the New Zealand Property Spine on the Toitū Te Whenua LINZ website.

    Description

This dataset provides river name lines for mainland New Zealand. It is part of a pilot to understand the benefit of combining river names and location, and making these openly available through the LINZ Data Service.

Unnamed rivers are also included in this dataset.

How this data can be used

Together with the NZ River Name Polygons (Pilot) dataset, these are the first openly available datasets with NZ river names attributed to geometry features (lines and polygons). This data can be used for searching for a named river and zooming to its extents, extracting geometries of a named river, creating digital cartographic products displaying river names, and analysing other features against named rivers (e.g. identifying buildings or properties within a specified distance of a particular river).

    Data vintage

The river names and extents in this dataset are based on the cartographic text shown on NZ Topo50 maps as of December 2018, and are an approximation and should not be taken as official. Further details are included in the 'Naming Extents Methodology' section in the 'Lineage' of this metadata. Please refer to the NZ River Name Lines and Polygons (Pilot) Data Dictionary for detailed metadata and information about this dataset.

    Related data

NZ River Name Polygons (Pilot) - contains larger rivers captured as polygon features instead of lines.

We recommend using the two river name datasets with the following NZ Topo50 layers for connectivity and visualisation of inland hydrographic features.

    Description

Please note: this dataset is now deprecated and replaced by NZ Suburbs and Localities in June 2023. This layer will be removed in one month.

The NZ Suburbs and Localities (Pilot) dataset describes the spatial extent and name of communities in urban areas (suburbs) and rural areas (localities) to help locate people and properties. It is based on the NZ Localities dataset which is maintained by Fire and Emergency NZ.

At this stage, NZ Localities continues to be maintained by Fire and Emergency NZ and published on the LINZ Data Service. Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) will establish a new dataset to replace NZ Localities in 2023. NZ Localities will continue to be available for a period of six months to allow for the transition to NZ Suburbs and Localities. Updates to both datasets will be limited to priority changes required by the Fire and Emergency Communications Centre during this transition.

While creating NZ Suburbs and Localities (Pilot), LINZ has taken the opportunity to restructure the data based on customer feedback. Our intention is to make the suburbs and localities data easier to understand and use.

The key changes introduced in NZ Suburbs and Localities (Pilot) are:

All suburb and locality names are now held in a single field, to replace the 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 1st order names New Zealand Geographic Board official place names have been adopted, including macrons. Additional name field, to hold alternative common or in-use names Each name field has a corresponding ascii field to provide the names without macrons or other special characters Territorial Authority has been added Small lakes and tarns have been removed A simple version of the data has been created to removed the related tables. A complex version of the data has three related tables to provide a one to many relationship for Territorial Authority, Additional Names and Adjacent Names. The complex version will be published once the data structure for the pilot has been confirmed Please refer to the "https://data.linz.govt.nz/document/24345-nz-suburbs-and-localities-migration-guidance/">NZ Localities Data Migration Guidance for more information.

LINZ Data Service (LDS) Item Page - https://data.linz.govt.nz/layer/105085-nz-coastline-mean-high-water/PurposeThe NZ Coastline – Mean High Water dataset is the first step towards improving the national coastline data for New Zealand. LINZ is currently working on a long-term project, “Coastal Mapping” to capture a range of national coastlines derived from LiDAR and bathymetry. This will enable us to generate coastlines, for example, for Mean High Water Springs, Chart Datum and Highest Astronomical Tide. The project is currently focused on capturing LiDAR and bathymetry data, and the timeframe for delivering the new coastlines will be established once the data capture has progressed.StatusThis dataset was created from LINZ Hydrographic and Topographic sources in August 2020 and will not be maintained in this form. This dataset will be replaced by a more accurate dataset in the future once data becomes available through the Coastal Mapping project.Data sources and preparationThe spatial coastline data (1:50,000 scale) is sourced from the Topo50 series where it is described as a line forming the boundary between the land and sea, defined by mean high water. The source polygon data has been broken up into line segments to enable a coastal classification to be attributed to each segment of coast. Coastal classification data is based on official Electronic Navigational Charts published by the New Zealand Hydrographic Authority. Not all segments have been assigned a coastal category. If you have any questions, please contact us at maps@linz.govt.nz

    Description

This provides a polygon coastline and islands layer which is based on the Topo50 products. It is a combination of the following layers:

This topographic coastline is the line forming the boundary between the land and sea, defined by mean high water.

Islands from the NZ Island Polygons layer that lie within the NZ Coastline and Chatham Islands areas (i.e. islands in lakes, rivers and estuaries) have been removed.

The GIS workflow to create the layer is:

    1. NZ Coastlines were converted from a polyline to a polygon using a polyline to polygon tool.
    2. The resulting coastal polygon was then used as an input into an erase tool and run against the NZ Island Polygon layer to remove all islands lying within the NZ Mainland and Stewart Island.
    3. This was then merged with the NZ Chatham Is island polygons (Topo, 1:50k) that have had the islands within the main island polygon removed, NZ Auckland Is Island Polygons (Topo, 1:50k), NZ Campbell Is / Motu Ihupuku Island, NZ Antipodes Is Island Polygons (Topo, 1:25k), NZ Kermadec Is Island Polygons (Topo, 1:25k), NZ Bounty Is Island Polygons (Topo, 1:25k) and NZ Snares Is / Tini Heke Island Polygons (Topo, 1:25k) layers using a merge tool.

For more detailed description of each layer refer to the layer urls above.

    Description

This layer provides all cadastral parcel polygons and some associated descriptive data that details the appellation (legal description), purpose, size and a list of titles that have an interest in the parcel.

NOTE: This layer contains primary and non-primary approved, current or historic linear parcels (see status flag descriptions for more information).

In conjunction with the Linear Parcels, this layer provides the easiest way to create a relationship with associated tables such as Parcel Title Association List, Parcel Statutory Actions List and Survey Affected Parcels List.

This layer contains spatial and non-spatial (without geometry) parcels. The Landonline system which manages the data maintains non-spatial parcels for many different reasons. The non-spatial parcels can only be accessed via WFS or as a full layer file download. No layer clips can be used. The most common reasons for non-spatial parcels are:

    1. Flats and unit survey plans will create non-spatial parcels for referencing property rights. This is because the Landonline system has not yet been designed to support the spatial definition of these plans.

    2. Titles which were not linked to a spatial parcel during the Landonline title conversion project created non-spatial parcel references. As titles are spatially linked many of these non-spatial parcels will be made historic or will be merged with the associated spatial parcel.

Parcels within this layer contain the following status flags:

    • Approved: The definition of a survey-defined parcel that has been processed and authorised as correct in terms of the survey network.

    • Current: A parcels that has been registered or the parcel is made current by a statutory action against a Legalisation plan.

    • Survey Historic: A parcel that has been extinguished from the primary cadastral network but still exists in live Title estates.

    • Historic: A parcel that has been extinguished from the primary cadastral network and no longer exists in live Title estates or has an current recorded statutory action. Typically this happens when a parcel is subdivided or merged, and new titles or actions are registered against the replacing parcels. Note: Only parcel made historic since the beginning of Landonline operations (2002) are included.See this page for the actual dates when Landonline operations started.

Polygons within this layer have a nominal accuracy of 0.1-1m in urban areas and 1-100m in rural areas. For more detailed information about parcel accuracies please refer to the Survey Boundary Marks layer which contains accuracies for each parcel node.

The originating data for parcel/title associations includes some non-official sources where the official data does not support a link. For more information see.
