Therefore, digital transformation was quickly enhanced to meet changing business and market requirements for both employees and customers during the pandemic.

    Description

The datasets come from two surveys of Jamaican businesses conducted between May and June 2020. Two sets of self-administered surveys were conducted using Survey Monkey. A very small sample of financial institutions was surveyed to gain perspective on the challenges facing financiers as a result of the pandemic, and their efforts to respond to such challenges. Nine financial institutions completed this survey, and the results were used to complement the information derived from the second and major survey. The second survey targeted non-financial businesses operating in Jamaica. The sample of firms was selected from a list of all registered Jamaican firms, obtained from the Companies Office of Jamaica. A stratified random sample was used based on firm type, region, and sector. Some firms may have also participated in the study through contact made by their respective affiliations, which were approached to endorse the study and encourage their members to engage. A total of 390 firms completed the second survey. A significant degree of representation was achieved across size, type and age of business, sector and location of operation. Good gender representation was also achieved.

    Greater London Authority
    Description

The data contained in this repository relates to London's Creative Enterprise Zones. It can be used to review job and business data for each CEZ, as well as several other creative areas across London.

    About the data

    Sectors

The data relates specifically to creative sector SIC codes (standard industrial classification) as defined by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). The list of SIC codes is provided in the repository below (activity_subsector_sic.csv).

    Sources

Job counts are from the ONS Business Register & Employment Survey. Job counts are estimated through a survey of a sample businesses throughout the country. The survey takes place annually in September. Job data is available from 2015 to 2023. The data only counts employees registered for PAYE; it generally does not include sole traders/freelancers.

Business counts are from the ONS UK Business Counts. The count is based on active businesses and takes place annually in March. Business data is available from 2015 to 2024. Freelancers/sole traders may be included in these counts if they are registered with Companies House (e.g. as a limited company) at an address within the relevant creative area.

Note that because of the difference in survey months, there may be a lag between job and business trends. For example, job counts taken in 2020 (September) will likely be lower than previous years because they will be affected by Covid-19 related job losses, whereas business counts taken in 2020 (March) will likely not show major fluctuation from previous years because the Covid-19 related impacts won't yet have registered.

Turnover and births & deaths information comes from ONS Interdepartmental Business Register (IDBR). Information is available from 2015 to 2023. Because of data suppression, it is only available down to local authority level. The data has been scaled to estimate the amount of turnover, births, and deaths per creative area. For example, if a borough has 500 creative businesses producing 50m turnover, we would average 100k turnover per business. If the creative area in that borough has 100 creative businesses, 100 x 100,000 in turnover = 10m throughout the creative area.

For CEZ across two or more authorities, we have used the sum of turnover/births/deaths in the composite authorities as the basis for calculation.

Note that subsector or activity counts for births/deaths may not add up to the figures in the total births/deaths data due to rounding.

As a result, data on turnover, births & deaths should be treated as broad estimates only.

    Geographies

Job counts and business counts relate to the best-fit middle super output areas (MSOAs) for the boundary of each Creative Enterprise Zone. The MSOAs have been agreed with CEZ managers.

Turnover and births & deaths have been scaled from local authority-level data to the MSOAs above.

The list of MSOAs is provided in the repository below (cez_msoas.csv).

    Guide to spreadsheets

The spreadsheets below provide various configurations of the job and business counts, turnover, and births & deaths data.

Breakdowns are provided for area and aggregate data:

    • Area data relates to individual creative areas (i.e. individual Creative Enterprise Zones and non-CEZ comparison areas)
    • Aggregate data relates to collections of creative areas (e.g. all CEZ areas, all comparator areas)

For both area and aggregate data, the following configurations are provided per year (listed from most general to most granular):

    • Headline data
    • Activities (i.e. consumption or production)
    • Subsectors (e.g. architecture, photography)
    • Activities x subsectors (e.g. consumption - screen and digital, production - screen and digital)
    • Specific subsectors by 5-digit SIC code (job and business counts only)

Guide to Creative Enterprise Zones data explorer

The data has been built into an interactive explorer for quick visualisation and analysis, which is available here. The explorer takes around five seconds to load initially and works best on a laptop or desktop (not mobile). Tips for using the explorer:

    • 2024 data is only available for business counts
    • Export any of the graphs as a .png using the small icon in the top-right of a graph
    • In the subsector graphs, single-click a legend item to remove it from the graph, or double-click a legend item to only show that item on the graph

    Description
The Business Insights and Conditions Survey (BICS, formerly the Business Impact of COVID-19 Survey) is a voluntary fortnightly survey of businesses developed to deliver timely indicators to help understand the impact of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). The scope of the survey has been expanded to explore other economic-related issues such as the European Union transition period (Brexit). The survey captures businesses responses on how their turnover, workforce, prices, trade and business resilience have been affected in the two week reference period.

The data should be treated with caution as results reflect the characteristics of those who responded and not necessarily the wider business population. Comparison of the proportions of businesses' trading status between waves should be treated with caution because of the voluntary nature of the survey, the difference in response rates and dependency on those businesses that only responded in particular waves. These data should not be used in place of official statistics. The survey was designed to give an indication of the impact of the coronavirus on businesses and a timelier estimate than other surveys. The latest publications from the survey can be found on the ONS Business Services webpage.

    Linking to other business studies
These data contain IDBR reference numbers. These are anonymous but unique reference numbers assigned to business organisations. Their inclusion allows researchers to combine different business survey sources together. Researchers may consider applying for other business data to assist their research.

    Latest edition information
For the 30th edition (July 2025), data and documentation for Wave 126 were added to the study.

    Description

What is the COVID-19 Economic Vulnerability Index? The COVID-19 Vulnerability Index (CVI) is a measurement of the negative impact that the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis can have on employment based upon a region's mix of industries. For example, accommodation and food services are projected to lose more jobs as a result of the coronavirus (in the neighborhood of 50%) compared with utilities and healthcare (with none or little expected job contraction). This updated dataset contains 116 jobs attributes including the 10 most likely jobs to be impacted for each county, the total employment and employment by sector. An attribute list is included below. An average Vulnerability Index score is 100, representing the average job loss expected in the United States. Higher scores indicate the degree to which job losses may be greater — an index score of 200, for example, means the rate of job loss can be twice as large as the national average. Conversely, an index score of 50 would mean a possible job loss of half the national average. Regions heavily dependent on tourism with relatively high concentrations of leisure and hospitality jobs, for example, are likely to have high index scores. The Vulnerability Index only measures the impact potential related to the mix of industry employment. The index does not take into account variation due to a region’s rate of virus infection, nor does it factor in local government's policies in reaction to the virus. For more detail, please see this description.MethodologyThe index is based on a model of potential job losses due to the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States. Expected employment losses at the subsector level are based upon inputs which include primary research on expert testimony; news reports for key industries such as hotels, restaurants, retail, and transportation; preliminary release of unemployment claims; and the latest job postings data from Chmura's RTI database. The forecast model, based on conditions as of March 23, 2020, assumes employment in industries in each county/region would change at a similar rate as employment in national industries. The projection estimates that the United States could lose 15.0 million jobs due to COVID-19, with over half of the jobs lost in hotels, food services, and entertainment industries.
