    Suburbs and Localities (SAL)

Previously known as State Suburbs (SSC).

Suburbs and Localities (SALs) are an approximation of the officially recognised boundaries of suburbs (in cities and larger towns) and localities (outside of cities and larger towns). There are 15,353 SALs covering the whole of Australia without gaps or overlaps. They are constructed from Mesh Blocks.

This layer provide some of the more commonly used variables from the General Community Profile information from the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2021 census. Data is available for Country, Greater Capital City Statistical Area (GCCSA), Local Government Area (LGA), Statistical Area Level 1 (SA1) and 2 (SA2), and Suburb and Localities (SAL) boundaries.

The General Community Profile contains a series of tables showing the characteristics of persons, families and dwellings in a selected geographic area. The data is based on place of usual residence (that is, where people usually live, rather than where they were counted on Census night). Community Profiles are excellent tools for researching, planning and analysing geographic areas for a number of social, economic and demographic characteristics.

To see the full list of attributes available in this service, go to the "Data" tab, and choose "Fields" at the top right.

Please note that there are data assumptions that should be considered when analysing the ABS Census data. These are detailed within the Census documents referenced above. These include:

Registered Marital Status In December 2017, amendments to the Marriage Act 1961 came into effect enabling marriage equality for all couples. For 2021, registered marriages include all couples. Core Activity Need for Assistance Measures the number of people with a profound or severe core activity limitation. People with a profound or severe core activity limitation are those needing assistance in their day to day lives in one or more of the three core activity areas of self-care, mobility and communication because of a long-term health condition (lasting six months or more), a disability (lasting six months or more), or old age. Number of Motor Vehicles Excludes motorbikes, motor scooters and heavy vehicles.

Please note that there are small random adjustments made to all cell values to protect the confidentiality of data. These adjustments may cause the sum of rows or columns to differ by small amounts from table totals.

    Statistical Area Level 2 (SA2)

Statistical Areas Level 2 (SA2s) are medium-sized general purpose areas built up from whole Statistical Areas Level 1 (SA1s). They generally have a population between 3,000 and 25,000.

Their purpose is to represent a community that interacts together socially and economically. SA2s represent suburbs within cities and catchments of rural areas. In remote and regional areas, SA2s have smaller populations and cover a larger area than those in urban areas.

    Using SA2s with Census data

Use SA2s if you are analysing and comparing Census data at a suburb level in urban areas over Census years. A variety of other ABS data is released at the SA2 level for comparison.

    Statistical Area Level 1 (SA1)

Statistical Areas Level 1 (SA1s) are designed to maximise the geographic detail available for Census of Population and Housing data while maintaining confidentiality.

SA1s are built from whole Mesh Blocks and have a population between 200 and 800 people. In remote and regional areas they generally have smaller populations than those in urban areas. SA1s are designed to represent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities as accurately as possible, particularly in remote areas.

    Using SA1s with Census data

Use SA1s to see how Census characteristics vary at a neighbourhood scale within larger areas such as Suburbs or Local Government Areas.

The process included the extraction of the themed features, and the translation of the data into a schema created by the Built Environment & Exposure Section, National Location Information Branch, Geoscience Australia (GA). In 2023 further FME processing was completed where the dataset was address matched using the original address provided and compared with the Geocoded National Address File (G-NAF) data. If no address match occurred GIS specialists attempted to find a relevant corresponding G-NAF address to join to, where possible. Data dictionary

    Description

The digital Suburb/Locality Boundaries and their legal identifiers have been derived from the cadastre data from each Australian state and territory jurisdiction and are available below

Suburb/Locality Boundaries are part of the PSMA Administrative Boundaries dataset built and maintained by PSMA Australia, using authoritative government data, sourced from the state and territory government mapping agencies and land registries of Australia as well as from the Australian Electoral Commission and Australian Bureau of Statistics.

The full PSMA Administrative Boundaries dataset contains boundaries in seven themes: Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) boundaries, electoral boundaries, state and territory boundaries, local government areas, suburbs/localities, wards and town points.

As at November 2019, users have the option to download datasets with feature coordinates referencing the new Geocentric Datum of Australia 2020 (GDA2020) in addition to datasets on the GDA94 datum.

For GDA2020 datasets, the name of the zip folder and the root folder (once extracted) include a reference to GDA2020. For GDA94 datasets, the zip and root folder names do not contain the datum name (i.e. they remain the same as previous releases).

For example, the zip and root folder for Administrative Boundaries downloaded in GDA2020 for November 2019 looks like this:

      • NOV19_AdminBounds_ESRIShapefileorDBFfile_GDA2020; or
      • NOV19_AdminBounds_MapInfoTABFormat_GDA2020

The zip and root folder for Administrative Boundaries in GDA94 for November 2019 looks like this:

      • NOV19_AdminBounds_ESRIShapefileorDBFfile; or
      • NOV19_AdminBounds_MapInfoTABFormat

Irrespective of the datum chosen, files within the respective folder use exactly the same naming structures.

For further information on Administrative Boundaries, including FAQs on the data, see: www.psma.com.au/products/administrative-boundaries or contact PSMA’s network of value added resellers and integrators that provide a range of commercial products based on Administrative Boundaries including software solutions, consultancy and support.

Local Government Areas cover incorporated areas of Australia. Incorporated areas are legally designated parts of a State or Territory over which incorporated local governing bodies have responsibility. The major areas of Australia not administered by incorporated bodies are the northern parts of South Australia, and all of the Australian Capital Territory and the Other Territories. Description

The digital Local Government Areas and their legal identifiers have been derived from the cadastre data from each Australian state and territory jurisdiction and are available below.

Local Government Areas are part of the PSMA Administrative Boundaries dataset built and maintained by PSMA Australia, using authoritative government data, sourced from the state and territory government mapping agencies and land registries of Australia as well as from the Australian Electoral Commission and Australian Bureau of Statistics.
