    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the data for the London, OH population pyramid, which represents the London population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. It lists the male and female population for each age group, along with the total population for those age groups. Higher numbers at the bottom of the table suggest population growth, whereas higher numbers at the top indicate declining birth rates. Furthermore, the dataset can be utilized to understand the youth dependency ratio, old-age dependency ratio, total dependency ratio, and potential support ratio.

    Key observations

    • Youth dependency ratio, which is the number of children aged 0-14 per 100 persons aged 15-64, for London, OH, is 30.2.
    • Old-age dependency ratio, which is the number of persons aged 65 or over per 100 persons aged 15-64, for London, OH, is 27.7.
    • Total dependency ratio for London, OH is 57.9.
    • Potential support ratio, which is the number of youth (working age population) per elderly, for London, OH is 3.6.

    FOCUSONLONDON2010:POPULATIONANDMIGRATION

London is the United Kingdom’s only city region. Its population of 7.75 million is 12.5 per cent of the UK population living on just 0.6 per cent of the land area. London’s average population density is over 4,900 persons per square kilometre, this is ten times that of the second most densely populated region.

Between 2001 and 2009 London’s population grew by over 430 thousand, more than any other region, accounting for over 16 per cent of the UK increase.

This report discusses in detail the population of London including Population Age Structure, Fertility and Mortality, Internal Migration, International Migration, Population Turnover and Churn, and Demographic Projections.

Population and Migration report is the first release of the Focus on London 2010-12 series. Reports on themes such as Income, Poverty, Labour Market, Skills, Health, and Housing are also available.

Male and Female Population Under 5 Years, Male and Female Population over 85 years, Male and Female Total Population for Age Groups, Male and Female Population Between 5 and 9 years, Male and Female Population Between 10 and 14 years, Male and Female Population Between 15 and 19 years, Male and Female Population Between 20 and 24 years, Male and Female Population Between 25 and 29 years, Male and Female Population Between 30 and 34 years, Male and Female Population Between 35 and 39 years, and 9 more
    Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To measure the three variables, namely (a) male population, (b) female population and (b) total population, we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the age groups. For age groups we divided it into roughly a 5 year bucket for ages between 0 and 85. For over 85, we aggregated data into a single group for all ages. Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the data for the London, KY population pyramid, which represents the London population distribution across age and gender, using estimates from the U.S.

    • Youth dependency ratio, which is the number of children aged 0-14 per 100 persons aged 15-64, for London, KY, is 40.2.
    • Old-age dependency ratio, which is the number of persons aged 65 or over per 100 persons aged 15-64, for London, KY, is 32.7.
    • Total dependency ratio for London, KY is 72.9.
    • Potential support ratio, which is the number of youth (working age population) per elderly, for London, KY is 3.1.

    Description

The youngest air passengers were found at Stansted and Luton Airport. Given that both airports are known as bases for low-cost carriers like Ryanair, easyJet and TUI Airways, this seems unsurprising. The share of those aged 45 years and older was similar for all three major London airports - Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton. Stansted being the only exception, where the share of older passengers was smallest.

    Heathrow busiest airport

Heathrow was the busiest airport in the United Kingdom. With roughly ** million passengers passing through in 2018, it also surpassed all other air travel hubs in Europe in 2017, pushing ahead of Frankfurt, Paris and Istanbul.

    Gender differences

In terms of gender distribution, Heathrow was the only airport with a noticeable difference in the gender of its passengers. In 2019, ** percent of passengers utilizing the airport had been male. Other London airports had reported an equal share of both genders.

The share of under 16s in the overall population of the United Kingdom was **** percent in 2023, compared with **** percent in 1971. Throughout this period, the share of under 16s in the overall UK population has declined significantly, with a brief uptick visible in the *****. Aging population in the UK In 2001, the median age of the UK population was **** years, with this increasing to **** by 2022. Among UK regions, South West England had the highest median age in 2022, at **** years, compared with just **** years in London, the regions with the lowest median age. In the future, it is expected that the median age of the UK population will continue to increase. By 2050, it will reach **** years, ** by 2075, and by the end of the century the median age will reach **** years. Challenges of an aging population As the average age of the population gets older, the UK will face numerous challenges in adapting to this demographic change. With fewer people in the labor market, the government will raise less revenue, and struggle with increased expenditure on pensions. The UK is by no means alone in facing this challenge, with several countries, particular in Southern Europe and East Asia, facing similar demographic challenges. In 2050, for example, it is expected that **** percent of the population of South Korea will be aged 65 or over.

From November 3rd to December 1st, 4000 Londoners took part in Talk London’s Annual London Survey (ALS) to share their views on what makes London a great place to live, and what aspects of life in the capital could do with some improvement. The London Survey aims to address three key questions: To what extent are Londoners satisfied with their quality of life, and what drives this satisfaction? What do Londoners think are the most important drivers of a successful place to live and work? What does the balance of satisfaction and rank of different aspects of London life mean for experience and enjoyment of the city, and how can this be improved? Technical Details Results are based on interviews with 3861 London residents aged 18+ Interviews were carried out online via the Talk London community between 3rd November and 1st December 2015. Participants were self-selecting, and outreach undertaken via a number of known databases. This achieved a non-representative sample of Londoners. The data was weighted by age, gender and ethnicity to reflect the London population according to ONS data. Robustness was maintained through achieving a minimum quota of responses from each demographic group. This is the second London Survey conducted through Talk London for City Hall.
