Managing funding pressures in the face of high demand from a growing and ageing population, increasingly complex care needs, reduced central government funding to local authorities and rising care costs has been a challenge for Social Services for the Elderly and People with Disabilities. Nonetheless, revenue is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 4.0% to £8.9 billion over the five years through 2025-26. The UK population is getting older – in 2023, there were 11 million people aged over 65 in England, according to Age UK. At the same time, the number of people living with disabilities has crept upwards. These factors boost the need for social care services.
