According to the 2021 Census, London was the most ethnically diverse region in England and Wales – 63.2% of residents identified with an ethnic minority group.

This statistic shows the distribution of ethnic groups of Inner London, United Kingdom (UK) at the time of the 2011 National Census. 'White' is the largest group, at 57.2 percent of the population, followed by 'Black / African / Caribbean / Black British,' and Asian / Asian British.'

Number of people belonging to a visible minority group as defined by the Employment Equity Act and, if so, the visible minority group to which the person belongs. The Employment Equity Act defines visible minorities as 'persons, other than Aboriginal peoples, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour.' The visible minority population consists mainly of the following groups: South Asian, Chinese, Black, Filipino, Latin American, Arab, Southeast Asian, West Asian, Korean and Japanese.

The ethnic group that the person completing the census feels they belong to. This could be based on their culture, family background, identity or physical appearance.

Respondents could choose one out of 19 tick-box response categories, including write-in response options.

From November 3rd to December 1st, 4000 Londoners took part in Talk London’s Annual London Survey (ALS) to share their views on what makes London a great place to live, and what aspects of life in the capital could do with some improvement. The London Survey aims to address three key questions: To what extent are Londoners satisfied with their quality of life, and what drives this satisfaction? What do Londoners think are the most important drivers of a successful place to live and work? What does the balance of satisfaction and rank of different aspects of London life mean for experience and enjoyment of the city, and how can this be improved? Technical Details Results are based on interviews with 3861 London residents aged 18+ Interviews were carried out online via the Talk London community between 3rd November and 1st December 2015. Participants were self-selecting, and outreach undertaken via a number of known databases. This achieved a non-representative sample of Londoners. The data was weighted by age, gender and ethnicity to reflect the London population according to ONS data. Robustness was maintained through achieving a minimum quota of responses from each demographic group. This is the second London Survey conducted through Talk London for City Hall.

The decision not to give a full release to the 2023-based projections was a consequence of problems with official population estimates used as inputs to the models; they are set to be updated later in 2025 once updated estimates are released by ONS.

These outputs were produced in April 2025 as part of the population and pupil projection services that the GLA offers to local authorities in London and are presented here to:

· Indicate the potential scale of impacts that recent updates and revisions to Long-Term International Migration (LTIM) estimates for the UK may have on the final projections.

· Demonstrate the results of a newly introduced methodology for projecting future fertility rates.

· Provide users an opportunity to give feedback on the updated set of projection variants being considered for inclusion in future releases.

· Be used as model inputs during the development of the GLA’s upcoming household projections.

A note providing an overview of the results of and background to these projections will be added in the coming weeks.

Occupation (current)

Classifies what people aged 16 years and over do as their main job. Their job title or details of activities they do in their job and any supervisory or management responsibilities form this classification. This information is used to code responses to an occupation using the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) 2020.

It classifies people who were in employment between 15 March and 21 March 2021, by the SOC code that represents their current occupation.

The lowest level of detail available is the four-digit SOC code which includes all codes in three, two and one digit SOC code levels.

Ethnic group

The ethnic group that the person completing the census feels they belong to. This could be based on their culture, family background, identity or physical appearance.
