    Description of R codes and data files in the repository

    This repository is imported from its GitHub repo. Versioning of this figshare repository is associated with the GitHub repo's Release. So, check the Releases page for updates (the next version is to include the unified version of the codes in the first release with the tidyverse).

    The raw input data consists of two files (i.e. will_INF.txt and go_INF.txt). They represent the co-occurrence frequency of top-200 infinitival collocates for will and be going to respectively across the twenty decades of Corpus of Historical American English (from the 1810s to the 2000s).

    These two input files are used in the R code file 1-script-create-input-data-raw.r. The codes preprocess and combine the two files into a long format data frame consisting of the following columns: (i) decade, (ii) coll (for "collocate"), (iii) BE going to (for frequency of the collocates with be going to) and (iv) will (for frequency of the collocates with will); it is available in the input_data_raw.txt.

    Then, the script 2-script-create-motion-chart-input-data.R processes the input_data_raw.txt for normalising the co-occurrence frequency of the collocates per million words (the COHA size and normalising base frequency are available in coha_size.txt). The output from the second script is input_data_futurate.txt.

    Next, input_data_futurate.txt contains the relevant input data for generating (i) the static motion chart as an image plot in the publication (using the script 3-script-create-motion-chart-plot.R), and (ii) the dynamic motion chart (using the script 4-script-motion-chart-dynamic.R).

    The repository adopts the project-oriented workflow in RStudio; double-click on the Future Constructions.Rproj file to open an RStudio session whose working directory is associated with the contents of this repository.

    The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates. To measure the three variables, namely (a) Population (Male), (b) Population (Female), and (c) Gender Ratio (Males per 100 Females), we initially analyzed and categorized the data for each of the gender classifications (biological sex) reported by the US Census Bureau across 18 age groups, ranging from under 5 years to 85 years and above.     About this dataset

    Context

    The dataset tabulates the population of Long Creek by gender across 18 age groups. It lists the male and female population in each age group along with the gender ratio for Long Creek. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population distribution of Long Creek by gender and age. For example, using this dataset, we can identify the largest age group for both Men and Women in Long Creek. Additionally, it can be used to see how the gender ratio changes from birth to senior most age group and male to female ratio across each age group for Long Creek.

    Description

    Nearly 9 million Americans live in extreme-poverty neighborhoods, places that also tend to be racially segregated and dangerous. Yet, the effects on the well-being of residents of moving out of such communities into less distressed areas remain uncertain. Moving to Opportunity (MTO) is a randomized housing experiment administered by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development that gave low-income families living in high-poverty areas in five cities the chance to move to lower-poverty areas. Families were randomly assigned to one of three groups: 1. The low-poverty voucher (LPV) group (also called the experimental group) received Section 8 rental assistance certificates or vouchers that they could use only in census tracts with 1990 poverty rates below 10 percent. The families received mobility counseling and help in leasing a new unit. One year after relocating, families could use their voucher to move again if they wished, without any special constraints on location. 2. The traditional voucher (TRV) group (also called the Section 8 group) received regular Section 8 certificates or vouchers that they could use anywhere; these families received no special mobility counseling. 3. The control group received no certificates or vouchers through MTO, but continued to be eligible for project-based housing assistance and whatever other social programs and services to which they would otherwise be entitled. Families were tracked from baseline (1994-1998) through the long-term evaluation survey fielding period (2008-2010) with the purpose of determining the effects of "neighborhood" on participating families. These particular files include data from the 3,273 adult interviews completed as part of the MTO long-term evaluation and are comprised of variables analyzed for the article "Neighborhood Effects on the Long-Term Well-Being of Low-Income Adults" that was published in the journal Science on September 21, 2012. Using data from the long-term evaluation, the article reports that moving from a high-poverty to lower-poverty neighborhood leads to long-term (10- to 15-year) improvements in adult physical and mental health and subjective well-being, despite not affecting economic self-sufficiency. Subjective well-being is more strongly affected by changes in neighborhood economic disadvantage than racial segregation, which is important because racial segregation has been declining since 1970, but income segregation has been increasing. The files submitted here contain all outcomes and mediators analyzed for the article as well as a variety of demographic and other baseline measures that were controlled for in the analysis.

    Description of Dataset This is a study of examples of Russian predicate adjectives in clauses with zero-copula present tense, where the adjective is a short form (SF) or a long form nominative (LF). The data was collected in 2022 from SynTagRus (https://universaldependencies.org/treebanks/ru_syntagrus/index.html), the syntactic subcorpus of the Russian National Corpus (https://ruscorpora.ru/new/). The data merges the results of several searches conducted to extract examples of sentences with long form and short form adjectives in predicate position, as identified by the corpus. The examples were imported to a spreadsheet and annotated manually, based on the syntactic analyses given in the corpus. For present tense sentences with no copula (Река спокойна or Река спокойная), it was necessary to search for an adjective as the top (root) node in the syntactic structure. The syntactic and morphological categories used in the corpus are explained here: https://ruscorpora.ru/page/instruction-syntax/. In order for the R code to run from these files, one needs to set up an R project with the data files in a folder named "data" and the R markdown files in a folder named "scripts". Method: Logistic regression analysis of corpus data carried out in R (R version 4.2.3 (2023-03-15)-- "Shortstop Beagle" Copyright (C) 2023 The R Foundation for Statistical Computing) and documented in an .Rmd file. Publication Abstract The present article presents an empirical investigation of the choice between so-called long (e.g., prostoj ‘simple’) and short forms (e.g., prost ‘simple’) of predicate adjectives in Russian based on data from the syntactic subcorpus of the Russian National Corpus. The data under scrutiny suggest that short forms represent the dominant option for predicate adjectives. It is proposed that long forms are descriptions of thematic participants in sentences with no complement, while short forms may take complements and describe both participants (thematic and rhematic) and situations. Within the “space of competition” where both long and short forms are well attested, it is argued that the choice of form to some extent depends on subject type, gender/number, and frequency. On the methodological level, the approach adopted in the present study may be extended to other cases of competition in morphosyntax. It is suggested that one should first “peel off” contexts where (nearly) categorical rules are at work, before one undertakes a statistical analysis of the “space of competition”.

    Description

    Bacterial wilt, caused by the plant pathogen Ralstonia solanacearum, occurs more severely in acidified soil according to previous reports. However, R. solanacearum cannot grow well in acidic environments under barren nutrient culture conditions, especially when the pH is lower than 5. With the worsening acidification of farmland, further determination of how R. solanacearum adapts to the long-term acidic environment is worthwhile. In this study, experimental evolution was applied to evaluate the adaptability and mechanism of the R. solanacearum experimental population responding to long-term acid stress. We chose the CQPS-1 strain as the ancestor, and minimal medium (MM medium) with different pH values as the culture environment to simulate poor soil. After 1500 generations of serial passage experiments in pH 4.9 MM, acid-adapted experimental strains (denoted as C49 strains) were obtained, showing significantly higher growth rates than the growth rates of control experimental strains (serial passage experiment in pH 6.5 MM, denoted as C65 strains). Competition experiments showed that the competitive indices (CIs) of all selected clones from C49 strains were superior to the ancestor in acidic environment competitiveness. Based on the genome variation analysis and functional verification, we confirmed that loss of function in the phcA gene was associated with the acid fitness gain of R. solanacearum, which meant that the inactivation of the PhcA regulator caused by gene mutation mediated the population expansion of R. solanacearum when growing in an acidic stress environment. Moreover, the swimming motility of acid evolution strains and the phcA deletion mutant was significantly enhanced compared to CQPS-1. This work provided evidence for understanding the adaptive strategy of R. solanacearum to the long-term acidic environment.

    Context

    The dataset illustrates the median household income in Long Branch, spanning the years from 2010 to 2023, with all figures adjusted to 2023 inflation-adjusted dollars. Based on the latest 2019-2023 5-Year Estimates from the American Community Survey, it displays how income varied over the last decade. The dataset can be utilized to gain insights into median household income trends and explore income variations.
