    DAY ~17,000 (January 1976 to December 2022)

This is a dataset that tracks relevant population statistics and employment rates per US state since 1976.

All data are official figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that have been compiled and structured by myself. Besides the 50 US states, the unemployment data of three other areas are also being tracked in order to increase the analytical potential of the dataset: the District of Columbia, the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Glendale metropolitan division, and New York City.

Why did I create this dataset? Employment continues to be a significant issue in America today and contributes to other predicaments such as the homelessness crisis. By uploading time-series data regarding American unemployment over the past four decades, I hope that the community is able to determine the various statistical trends offered. In my personal opinion, achieving a quantitative yet objective viewpoint of a subject such as unemployment is crucial to understanding the issues at hand.

    Data Sources

The primary data source used was the Bureau of Labor Statistics's official website, which publishes employment data pertaining to America. Considering the meticulous documentation of federal statistics by such a accredited government agency, no other authority is more equipped to provide insight on US unemployment.
    1. The Bureau of Labor Statistics's Economic News Release on (Monthly) State Employment and Unemployment - The Bureau of Labor Statistics has published monthly updates on unemployment rates since January 1976.
    2. The Bureau of Labor Statistics's State Employment and Unemployment Technical Note - The Bureau of Labor Statistics released a detailed overview of their unemployment data, the methodology behind their data, and the proper definitions and terminologies for the variables tracked. The guide mainly provided essential contextual knowledge needed to create a meaningful dataset.

    Description

The 2019 Hardship Index data is compiled from the 2019 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year average estimates. The Hardship Index methodology was developed by the Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute of Government to compare economic conditions of one place to another. The Index standardizes demographic and socio-economic variables, including unemployment, age dependency, education, income level, crowded housing, and poverty, and then averages them together, yielding a score on a scale of 0-100. Higher values indicate greater hardship. The index was calculated only in census tracts that had data for at least 5 of the 6 variables. For more information, see pages 27-28 of the 2013 Health Atlas, which is available as a PDF on the Los Angeles City Planning website, https://planning.lacity.gov.

    Description

Introduced in 1993, the Empowerment Zone (EZ), Enterprise Community (EC) , and Renewal Community (RC) Initiatives sought to reduce unemployment and generate economic growth through the designation of Federal tax incentives and award of grants to distressed communities. Local, Tribal, and State governments interested in participating in this program were required to present comprehensive plans that included the following principles: •Strategic Visions for Change, •Community-Based Partnerships, •Economic Opportunities, and •Sustainable Community Development.

Communities selected to participate in this program embraced these principles and led projects that promoted economic development in their distressed communities.

The EZ/EC initiative was implemented in the form of three competitions authorized by Congress in 1994 (round I), 1998 (round II), and 2001 (round III). These communities utilized HUD’s PERMS system to create Implementation Plans and develop Annual Reports, which can be publicly accessed here and overall, display extensive community and economic development impacts in these distressed communities.

The EC designation expired in 2004 and EZ and RC designations generally expired at the end of 2009. However, the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Re-authorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010, Pub. L. No. 111-312 extended the Empowerment Zone and DC Enterprise Zone designations to December 31, 2011.

Following the end of the EZ designation extension on December 31, 2011, the American Taxpayer Relief Act (ATRA) of 2012, signed into law by President Obama on January 2, 2013, provided for an extension of the Empowerment Zone designations until December 31, 2013. The ATRA of 2012 did not extend the designation of the DC Enterprise Zone.

For the EZ designation extension, IRS Notice 2013-38 issued on May 29, 2013 (see link under the “What’s New” heading on the left) explained a one step process stating that “any nomination for an Empowerment Zone that was in effect on December 31, 2009, is deemed amended to provide for a new termination date of December 31, 2013, unless the nominating entity sends written notification to the IRS by July 29, 2013.”

    Description

Abstract (en): Data on labor force activity for the week prior to the survey are supplied in this collection. Information is available on the employment status, occupation, and industry of persons 15 years old and over. Demographic variables such as age, sex, race, marital status, veteran status, household relationship, educational background, and Hispanic origin are included. In addition to providing these core data, the October survey also contains a special supplement on school enrollment for all persons surveyed aged 3 years old or older. This supplement includes the following items: current grade attending at public or private school, whether attending college full- or part-time at a two- or four-year institution, year last attended a regular school, and year graduated from high school. All persons in the civilian noninstitutional population of the United States living in households. The probability sample selected to represent the universe consists of approximately 57,000 households. The sample was located in 729 primary sampling units comprising 1,297 counties and independent cities with coverage in every state, the District of Columbia, and the sub-state areas of New York City and the Los Angeles-Long Beach metropolitan area. The codebook is provided as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using PDF reader software, such as the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided through the ICPSR Website on the Internet.

    Description

These data were prepared in conjunction with a project using Bureau of Labor Statistics data (not provided with this collection) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program data to examine the relationship between unemployment and violent crime. Three separate time-series data files were created as part of this project: a national time series (Part 1), a state time series (Part 2), and a time series of data for 12 selected cities: Baltimore, Buffalo, Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, New York City, Paterson (New Jersey), and Philadelphia (Part 3). Each data file was constructed to include 82 monthly time series: 26 series containing the number of Part I (crime index) offenses known to police (excluding arson) by weapon used, 26 series of the number of offenses cleared by arrest or other exceptional means by weapon used in the offense, 26 series of the number of offenses cleared by arrest or other exceptional means for persons under 18 years of age by weapon used in the offense, a population estimate series, and three date indicator series. For the national and state data, agencies from the 50 states and Washington, DC, were included in the aggregated data file if they reported at least one month of information during the year. In addition, agencies that did not report their own data (and thus had no monthly observations on crime or arrests) were included to make the aggregated population estimate as close to Census estimates as possible. For the city time series, law enforcement agencies with jurisdiction over the 12 central cities were identified and the monthly data were extracted from each UCR annual file for each of the 12 agencies. The national time-series file contains 82 time series, the state file contains 4,083 time series, and the city file contains 963 time series, each with 228 monthly observations per time series. The unit of analysis is the month of observation. Monthly crime and clearance totals are provided for homicide, negligent manslaughter, total rape, forcible rape, attempted forcible rape, total robbery, firearm robbery, knife/cutting instrument robbery, other dangerous weapon robbery, strong-arm robbery, total assault, firearm assault, knife/cutting instrument assault, other dangerous weapon assault, simple nonaggravated assault, assaults with hands/fists/feet, total burglary, burglary with forcible entry, unlawful entry-no force, attempted forcible entry, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, auto theft, truck and bus theft, other vehicle theft, and grand total of all actual offenses.

In 2023, the GDP of the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metropolitan area amounted to ****** billion chained 2017 U.S. dollars. The GDP of the United States since 1990 can be accessed here. Economic growth and unemployment in Chicago Economic growth in Chicago, measured by the growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), was significant in the years between 2001 and 2022. This growth occurred in a period of growth for cities nationally as seen by growth of other major American cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco. In contrast to Chicago’s growth, San Francisco’s growth rate demonstrated the effect of a new and booming industry. The influence of technology and internet companies saw San Francisco grow nearly ** percent in comparison to the ** percent growth in GDP achieved by Chicago. As a result, Chicago-Naperville-Elgin ranked third in Gross Metropolitan Product of the United States, by metropolitan area in 2022. The drop in GDP output in 2020 can be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic.
