The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. Face refers to the areal (polygon) topological primitives that make up MTDB. A face is bounded by one or more edges; its boundary includes only the edges that separate it from other faces, not any interior edges contained within the area of the face. The Topological Faces Shapefile contains the attributes of each topological primitive face. Each face has a unique topological face identifier (TFID) value. Each face in the shapefile includes the key geographic area codes for all geographic areas for which the Census Bureau tabulates data for both the 2020 Census and the annual estimates and surveys. The geometries of each of these geographic areas can then be built by dissolving the face geometries on the appropriate key geographic area codes in the Topological Faces Shapefile.

Los Angeles County Service Planning Areas (SPAs), updated in 2022. Los Angeles County is divided into eight SPAs for health care planning purposes.Updating SPA and Health District boundaries to align with new U.S. Census Bureau census tract boundaries is performed after every Decennial Census.How was this data created?The 2020 Census Tracts from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2021 TIGER/Line were used as building blocks for the SPA layer. The 2012 SPA layer was compared to the 2020 Census Tracts to provide preliminary information on the SPAs associated with each Census Tract and to determine where SPAs no longer aligned. For the 2022 SPA layer, boundaries were updated to align with the 2020 Census Tract boundary changes with consideration for maintaining effective service delivery. The Los Angeles County Waterworks Districts boundary layer was created by the GIS and Mapping Unit of the Waterworks Division from the legal descriptions of the initial formations of the Districts and updated with subsequent annexations (additions to) and detachments (subtractions from) of the Districts. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works provides the most current shapefiles representing city boundaries within Los Angeles County, and the shapefiles available in this download includes polygons and lines.

The Census Bureau (https://www.census.gov/) maintains census tract geographic boundaries for the analysis and mapping of demographic information across the United States. Every 10 years the Census Bureau provides opportunity to local government to review and update statistical areas boundary including census tract geography through Participants Statistical Areas Program (PSAP). Los Angeles County actively participated in PSAP program of 2010 and 2020 census and submit the update of census tract boundaries. There are little more Census Tracts within Los Angeles County in 2020 Census TIGER/Line Shapefiles, compared to 2010. The Census Bureau releases the results of census counts at different census geography including census tracts. This web map is crated to visualize the similarities and differences between Los Angeles County's 2010 and 2020 census tracts.

The City Official boundary extends six miles off the coast of Los Angeles County as required by the State of California official boundary for City's along the coast. The City Boundary provided here supports map cartography is the traditional view of Long Beach that highlights the Port of Long Beach and shore line. This is not the official City Limits and is commonly used to support map products for the Harbor and beach communities.

The CDP boundary usually is defined by the Census Bureau in cooperation with state, local or tribal officials. The boundaries are updated prior to each decennial census. These boundaries, which usually coincide with visible features or the boundary of an adjacent incorporated place or another legal entity boundary, have no legal status, nor do these places have officials elected to serve traditional municipal functions. CDP boundaries may change from one decennial census to the next with changes in the settlement pattern; a CDP with the same name as in an earlier census does not necessarily have the same boundary. CDPs must be contained within a single state and may not extend into an incorporated place. There are no population size requirements for CDPs. incorporated CDP data is download from Census Bureau's TIGER 2020 website (https://www2.census.gov/geo/tiger/TIGER2020/PLACE/) and extracted for Los Angeles County.
