The Los Angeles County Social Survey (LACSS) continues the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area Studies (LAMAS) and the Southern California Social Surveys (SCSS). The Los Angeles County Social Survey (LACSS) is part of a continuing annual research project supported by the Institute for Social Science Research at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). The LACSS 1995 was conducted between April and July 1995. Los Angeles County residents were asked questions concerning ethnic relations, social dominance, social distance, immigration, affirmative action, employment, and government. A split ballot methodology was utilized concerning the topics of immigration and affirmative action. Respondents were randomly selected to answer a series of questions from one of three ballots. In addition, a different series of social distance questions were asked depending on the respondent's ethnicity. Questionnaires were provided in both English and Spanish languages. Demographic information collected includes race, gender, religion, age, education level, occupation, birth place, political party affiliation and ideology, and origin of ancestry.

This dataset was used to analyze differences in impervious surface levels by race while also accounting for other sociodemographic factors and land use in Los Angeles County. Data was downloaded from the websites of the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Census Bureau, and Southern California Association of Governments. Due to redlining and disinvestment in neighborhoods of color, there are generally fewer green spaces and greater urban heat island effects in neighborhoods of color throughout the U.S., as documented in the environmental justice literature. Replacing impervious surfaces like concrete and asphalt with green stormwater infrastructure can help increase green space and reduce urban heat while also meeting local stormwater goals. This research supports existing findings and ties it to the local stormwater context in Los Angeles County. Based on the results of this research, local decision-makers should consider racial demographics when prioritizing where to remove impervious surface and replacing with green stormwater infrastructure.

This collection contains a cumulative datafile for The Los Angeles County Social Survey (LACSS) comprised of participants from years 1992 and 1994-1998. The LACSS continues the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area Studies (LAMAS) and the Southern California Social Surveys (SCSS). The Los Angeles County Social Survey (LACSS) is part of a continuing annual research project supported by the Institute for Social Science Research at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Each year a University of California researcher is given an opportunity to be principal investigator and to use a segment of the LACSS for his or her own research. Data for this collection represents the LACSS conducted between February 1992 and June 1998. No data was included for the year 1993. Fields ending in _yr1 were calculated for the original 2021-2022 SBLA report, while fields ending in _yr2 or without a year suffix were calculated for the 2023-2025 version. Eviction Filings per 100 (eviction_filings_per100) and Life Expectancy (life_expectancy) did not have updated data and are the same data shown in the Year 1 report.

Population and demographic data are from US Census American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates, aggregated up from census tract or block group to CSA. Year 1 data are from 2020, year 2 data are from 2022.

Poverty Data (200% FPL) are from LA County ISD-eGIS Demographics. Year 1 data are from 2021, Year 2 are from 2022.

The 2023-2025 report includes several new indicators that are calculated as the percent of countywide population by race that resides in a geographic area of interest. Population for these indicators is estimated based on intersection with census block group centroids. These indicators are:

About this dataset

Context

The dataset tabulates the population of Los Angeles County by race. It includes the population of Los Angeles County across racial categories (excluding ethnicity) as identified by the Census Bureau. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population distribution of Los Angeles County across relevant racial categories.

Key observations

The percent distribution of Los Angeles County population by race (across all racial categories recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau): 43.73% are white, 7.94% are Black or African American, 0.99% are American Indian and Alaska Native, 14.76% are Asian, 0.24% are Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander, 21.98% are some other race and 10.36% are multiracial.

In 2023, there were an estimated ******* white homeless people in the United States, the most out of any ethnicity. In comparison, there were around ******* Black or African American homeless people in the U.S. How homelessness is counted The actual number of homeless individuals in the U.S. is difficult to measure. The Department of Housing and Urban Development uses point-in-time estimates, where employees and volunteers count both sheltered and unsheltered homeless people during the last 10 days of January. However, it is very likely that the actual number of homeless individuals is much higher than the estimates, which makes it difficult to say just how many homeless there are in the United States. Unsheltered homeless in the United States California is well-known in the U.S. for having a high homeless population, and Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego all have high proportions of unsheltered homeless people. While in many states, the Department of Housing and Urban Development says that there are more sheltered homeless people than unsheltered, this estimate is most likely in relation to the method of estimation.
