The global heat-treated softwood market is experiencing robust growth, driven by increasing demand for durable and aesthetically pleasing wood products in construction, landscaping, and decking. The market's resilience stems from the inherent advantages of heat-treated softwood: enhanced dimensional stability, improved resistance to decay and insect infestation, and a richer, darker color that appeals to consumers. While precise market sizing data is unavailable, a reasonable estimate based on industry reports and observed growth in related sectors suggests a current market value (2025) of approximately $800 million. Considering a plausible CAGR of 7% (a conservative estimate considering the growth potential), the market is projected to reach approximately $1.2 billion by 2033. Key drivers include the growing preference for sustainable and eco-friendly building materials, coupled with the rising popularity of outdoor living spaces and associated landscaping projects. The market is segmented geographically, with North America and Europe currently holding significant shares, while Asia-Pacific presents a considerable growth opportunity. Leading companies such as Oy Lunawood, Thermory, and Stora Enso are shaping the market through technological advancements and expansion into new regions. However, restraints include fluctuating raw material prices and potential challenges associated with scaling production to meet the growing demand. The future of the heat-treated softwood market appears bright, with continued innovation expected to further enhance product performance and expand its applications. Increased adoption of sustainable forestry practices and advancements in heat treatment technologies will play a crucial role in driving market growth. The rising awareness of the environmental benefits of using sustainably sourced wood, combined with its long-term cost-effectiveness compared to alternative materials, ensures sustained consumer demand. Regional variations in growth will likely reflect factors such as building regulations, consumer preferences, and the availability of raw materials. Strategic partnerships, acquisitions, and product diversification will be crucial for market players to remain competitive and capture a greater market share in the coming decade.

The dataset includes results of laboratory analyses of 247 wood samples collected without bark from 24 live trees and 52 fallen logs of eight tree species: Acer platanoides, Betula pendula, Fraxinus excelsior, Picea abies, Populus tremula, Quercus robur, Tilia cordata, and Ulmus glabra. The dataset contains the following characteristics of wood samples: (1) bulk density (kg m-3) calculated by dividing the dry mass (at 60ºC for 96 h) by the fresh volume of a sample; (2) pH value measured with an electrode in the aqueous supernatant (0.5 g milled wood sample mixed with demineralized water 1:25); (3) concentrations of C and N (%) determined with a CHN analyser, and (4) concentration of Al, Ca, K, Cu, Mg, Mn, P, and Zn (mg kg-1) defined with ICP-OES. For each wood sample, the stage of decomposition is indicated; it varies from the initial class 0 (living trees) and then from the least decomposed class 1 to the most decomposed class 5. For fallen logs and standing trees, diameter at 1.3 m from the trunk base is given. For logs, the total length and mean stage of decomposition, weighted by the length of longitudinal fragments at different decay stages, are also presented. The logs were formed as a result of a mass windthrow occurred in a mesic broad-leaved forest in the strict Nature Reserve "Kaluzhskie Zaseki" in June 2006. The samples were collected in 2020-2022. The data are published as part of the RSF Project No. 22-24-01063 (https://rscf.ru/en/project/22-24-01063/) and analyzed in the articles Khanina et al., 2023 (https://doi.org/10.31857/S0024114823040034 https://doi.org/10.1016/j.foreco.2023.121275, https://journals.tsu.ru/biology/&journal_page=archive&id=2381&article_id=51970).

The purpose of this dataset is to help localize and classify different defects that are often found on wood planks used in manufacturing, or other wood products. Wood will often have knots, cracks, or holes in it, all of which inform the quality and condition of the wood.
This class contains cracks in the wood. It specifically does not contain cracks that occur in knots.
This class contains holes in wood. The two major kinds of holes are: the hole a termite or nail may leave behind, small and concentrated; or a hole that has the same dark color as a crack but just doesn't go anywhere, instead having a circular shape. These holes can be very small, so look carefully!
This is a knot that has a crack in it. It doesn't matter if the knot is dead or alive; if it has a crack in it, it's a knot with crack.
This knot belonged to a branch that died before the tree was cut down. Dead knots typically have strong discoloration around at least some part of their boundary, indicating that its growth with the tree was poor. Often this discoloration is in the form of a very dark ring around the knot. Other times, there is just a sudden and sharp contrast with the color of the rest of the wood, that isn't necessarily shaped as a ring. The discoloration is sharp and sudden. It can look like the boundary of rot.
This a knot that belonged to a living branch. These knots may be a different color from the rest of the wood, but the boundary between them and the wood is typically softer than it is for a dead knot. The knot looks like it is part of the wood, solidly attached all the way around. If the wood has grain around the knot, the grain moves smoothly around the knot. These knots can have rings, but their boundaries are soft.

This dataset focuses on identifying and classifying various defects in wood surfaces. The task is to annotate images of wood with the presence of defects such as holes, cracks, and knots. These annotations are crucial for training models to automatically detect and classify defects, aiding in quality control and grading of wood products. The classes include:
Small, circular indentations typically less significant in size compared to other hole categories. These appear as small circular dark spots on the wood.
Annotate the entire circular indentation, ensuring that the bounding box encompasses the whole area where wood is missing or dented. Do not annotate these if they are less than 5 pixels in diameter.
Linear or jagged lines that indicate a fracture in the wood. Cracks are often elongated and may vary in width along their length.
Draw bounding boxes along the entire visible length of the crack. Ensure the box encompasses any branching lines that stem from the main crack. For annotations, follow the main line of the crack, but include any splintering that is directly connected.
Dark, circular areas that appear dry and brittle, typically surrounded by rough wood grain. They may have irregular boundaries and a decayed appearance.
Mark the entire darkened, circular region, even if part of it is lighter in the interior. Include any extensions that look dry or affected by the decay, but do not extend beyond the immediate boundary of the knot.
Larger gaps or voids that might appear irregular in shape. These are sections where the wood is entirely missing and light typically passes through or displays a shadow.
Draw bounding boxes around the entire void space, even if irregular in shape. Include shadowed areas that indicate depth, but do not mark minor surface blemishes that don't have actual depth.
Healthy, circular knots that form part of the natural wood grain, usually appearing smoother and with a more uniform color than dead knots.
Enclose the entire circular area, noting the smooth transition into the wood grain. Ensure to include the knot's complete extension within the box, but do not mark surrounding grain patterns as part of the knot.
A knot that exhibits visible cracks either crossing through or radiating from the knot itself. These often show the knot encapsulated with splits.
Ensure the bounding box includes the full knot and all visible cracks radiating from it. Pay attention to cracks that intersect the knot's edge and ensure these are enclosed within the same annotation. Differentiate this from a regular crack by noting the circular central knot formation.
