    Description

A large part of the e-commerce growth worldwide comes from consumers buying products and services using mobile devices. Statista's Digital Market Insights reveals that in 2023, revenue from mobile e-commerce sales reached an estimated 1.7 trillion U.S. dollars, accounting for over half of all retail e-commerce sales. Mobile's proportion has consistently increased over time, going from 43 percent in 2018 to a projected 63 percent by 2028.

The mobile device takeover The significant rise in m-commerce sales is a testament to the increasing reliance on smartphones and tablets for online shopping. In 2023, approximately 30 percent of online shoppers globally used mobile commerce weekly, with numerous countries surpassing this figure. Mobile devices were the primary drivers of retail website traffic and transactions worldwide, accounting for nearly 80 percent of visits and 66 percent of orders.

M-commerce tough spots While mobile commerce enjoys widespread popularity and dominance in various aspects, it also faces drawbacks. Despite having a higher global add-to-cart rate than tablets and desktops, mobile phones exhibit the lowest conversion rate among all devices. Furthermore, consumers tend to prefer desktop computers for larger expenses. As of the end of 2023, the average value of online shopping orders on desktops was approximately 159 U.S. dollars, compared to 103 dollars on mobile phones.

    Description

Ethical clearance: 2020FOBREC806 The lack of a dependable framework for using mobile commerce to manage brick-and-mortar retailer stakeholders' priorities continues to be a concern for conventional business leaders, who continue to struggle to incorporate productivity-enhancing technologies into their businesses. Even so, conventional retailers expect mobile commerce to enable them to respond to continuous uncertainty and unpredictable changes in a dynamic business environment, accommodate new consumer experiences, boost sales of products/services and achieve competitive advantage. Given the above, this study aims to explore the use of a framework for mobile commerce in brick-and-mortar retailers. The main objective is to investigate the underlying factors that are requisite for the use of a framework for mobile commerce in brick-and-mortar retailers. Thus, the study integrated the Technology-Organisation-Environment framework and the Task-Technology Fit model as the lens to better explore the magnitude of the problem. The study combined both the positivist and interpretive paradigms and followed a cross-sectional study design. Both the structured questionnaire and the semi-structured interview as survey instruments were considered appropriate for the collection of both qualitative and quantitative data from brick-and-mortar business managers/owners and mobile commerce business personnel. Descriptive analysis, Structural Equation Modeling analysis and content analysis were performed. Thus, triangulation between qualitative data and quantitative data was used to ensure concurrent validity. The general framework proposed by the study provides a comprehensive structural design within the alignment of brick-and-mortar retailer operations and mobile commerce practices. It may help conventional businesses to understand and identify the requisite factors in the adoption and use of m-commerce and assist business supporters in the process of technological innovation transfer.

Mobile retail e-commerce sales in India were estimated to be valued at nearly ** billion U.S. dollars by 2020. This was a significant growth since 2015, yet not surprising considering the penetration rates of smartphones and mobile internet in the country.

      India emerging digitally

With the drastic growth in the number of mobile internet users since the inception of Digital India and the rise of Reliance’s Jio, Indians were able to catch up to other major economies in participating in in-store mobile checkouts with retailers’ applications. Additionally, the rise of mobile wallets and the potential to buy practically anything online increases the convenience of achieving that via a mobile phone. Naturally, the largest share of mobile consumers buying online come from younger generations, millennials specifically .

Competition among retailers and their mobile apps

Flipkart, one of India’s leading online sellers, is in close competition with Amazon. As early as March 2015, the company blocked access to their website via mobile devices, requiring app downloads instead. This was implemented in the following months with Myntra, a fashion retailer and standalone subsidiary of the former.

In India, mobile and online retail purchasing was highest during the weeks leading up to Deepavali – the Indian festival of lights. Online shopping has become increasingly popular with each year during this period, when the ecommerce ecosystem undergoes a sort of sales bonanza. Data revealed a surge in retail app and web usage three weeks preceding the festival, likely from the convenience of scrolling through products at the palm of your hand, rather than using a desktop or PC, saving time and still ensuring the same quality of purchase.

    Description

The mobile commerce platform market is experiencing robust growth, driven by the increasing adoption of smartphones and the rising preference for mobile shopping among consumers globally. The market, estimated at $200 billion in 2025, is projected to achieve a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 15% from 2025 to 2033, reaching approximately $650 billion by 2033. This expansion is fueled by several key factors. Firstly, the continuous improvement in mobile internet infrastructure and the proliferation of affordable smartphones, particularly in emerging markets, are significantly expanding the potential user base. Secondly, the ongoing development of sophisticated mobile commerce platforms, offering seamless user experiences, enhanced security features, and personalized recommendations, is driving adoption among both consumers and businesses. Furthermore, the increasing integration of mobile commerce with social media platforms and the rise of mobile-first marketing strategies are contributing to this growth trajectory. The market is segmented by business size (small, medium, large) and platform type (cloud-based, on-premises), with cloud-based solutions experiencing higher adoption due to their scalability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of implementation. North America currently holds a significant market share, followed by Europe and Asia-Pacific, with the latter poised for substantial growth in the coming years due to increasing smartphone penetration and rising internet usage. However, the market also faces certain challenges. Concerns regarding data security and privacy, the need for robust customer support systems, and the high initial investment costs for businesses adopting these platforms are acting as restraints. Despite these constraints, the long-term outlook remains positive, fueled by continuous technological advancements and the evolving shopping habits of consumers who increasingly prefer the convenience and accessibility of mobile commerce. The competitive landscape is characterized by a mix of established players, such as Netsuite, Salesforce, and Oracle, and emerging innovative companies like Shopify and BigCommerce, catering to various business needs and offering diverse functionalities. This dynamic environment will continue to drive innovation and further propel the market's growth in the coming years.

The top countries for mobile commerce

The quick development of the online shopping market has allowed buyers, retailers, and manufacturers to break down physical distances between one another on an unprecedented level. With smartphones being so prevalent around the world, this, of course encompasses mobile commerce. In the United Kingdom, nearly seven in ten shoppers made online purchases with their smartphones in 2022. Globally, South Korean consumers took the lead when it came to frequent m-commerce purchases that year, with 44 percent of their internet users making purchases via mobile on a weekly basis.

How much to spend and where to spend it

Throughout all regions, desktops generally had the highest average online order value (AOV) for purchases, when compared to mobile devices. In the U.S. mobile phones had an AOV of about 112 U.S. dollars, while in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, the mobile AOV was around 95 dollars. For U.S. Americans, when it came to which singular app consumers could be most likely to spend this money on, the Amazon app came out on top. The renowned e-commerce giant’s mobile app had nearly 35 million downloads in 2022. The SHEIN app ranked second with almost 27 million.
