EU exports

In 2023, Germany was the main export partner of Turkey, reaching an export value of about 21 billion U.S. dollars that year. Among the leading countries importing from Turkey, there were some of the biggest countries in the European Union, such as Italy, Spain, and France. When it comes to the goods exported from Turkey to the whole European Union, motor cars and motor vehicles took the lead, with an export value of over six billion euros in 2022.

How do exports affect the Turkish economy?

Between 2013 and 2022, the import value of goods and services to Turkey exceeded the export value, as the country recorded negative values in terms of foreign trade balance each year. In 2022, the foreign balance amounted to minus 109.5 billion U.S. dollars, which was the highest trade deficit of the country over this period. The share of exports in the country’s gross domestic product mainly grew from 2015 to 2022 and reached over 28 percent as of 2022. In comparison, the ratio of exports to GDP in Turkey corresponded to 17.4 percent in 2015.

In 2022, the top five export partner countries of Turkey included Germany, the United States, Iraq, the United Kingdom, and Italy. Total exports from Turkey to Germany amounted to over 21 billion U.S. dollars in 2022, making Germany the leading country for Turkish exports. It was followed by the United States with nearly 16.7 billion U.S. dollars and Iraq with 13.8 billion U.S. dollars.

Over the observed period from 2014 to 2023, Turkey recorded the highest export value in 2023, amounting to over 255.4 billion U.S. dollars in total. Germany was the number one export partner of Turkey in the whole period and recorded an export value of 21 billion U.S. dollars in 2023. Additionally, the U.S. and Iraq became the second and third leading export partners of Turkey, registering approximately 14.8 and 12.8 billion U.S. dollars in export value, respectively.

In 2023, vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock, and parts and accessories thereof were the main products exported from Turkey, with trade value amounting to almost 31 billion U.S. dollars. Additionally, nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery, and mechanical appliances became the second most exported product group with an export value of 25.2 billion U.S. dollars in the same year.

In 2023, the category of motor cars and motor vehicles ranked first among goods imported to the European Union from Turkey, with nearly eight billion euros in trade value. Additionally, motor vehicle parts became the second most exported product category from Turkey to the EU with an export value of 4.3 billion euros. In terms of main exported commodities from Turkey to the rest of the world, vehicles other than railway or tramway rolling stock ranked first.
