    Description

The aim of this study is to analyse the role played by E. maritimum in the dune pollination network of the Balearic Islands, where there is an intense anthropogenic impact in its habitat. For this purpose, two populations located in the North and South of Mallorca were chosen, in which diurnal transects were carried out to observe and capture pollinators on 15 plant species during the anthesis period of E. maritimum. The flowering period of 10 plant species flowering at the same period than E. maritimum was analysed to identify periods of competition First sampling area was located in Son Serra de Marina (SS, 39.7309N, 3.2382E), in the North of the island. We carried out three 50m linear transects along the seashore. Transects were randomly located at a minimum of 100 m from each other in order to enhance the chances of a fair sampling of most of the flora. In both areas, vegetation, and so transects, followed a clear sequence from the seashore inland. Areas were sampled for 10 we...

    Description

Field elm (Ulmus minor) is a riparian tree that grows in rare, small populations scattered along temporary watercourses in the Balearic Islands, nowadays mostly covered with Mediterranean vegetation. Agriculture and farming on the fertile land along the periodically flooded plains have reduced the elm populations to sparse tree lines along the creek beds. The presence of field elm in this very anthropic landscape has led some authors to consider it as an introduced species in the Balearics. However, pollen data suggest these elms may be the remains of larger populations experiencing continuous population shrinkage during the Holocene, and hence be native to the isles. In this paper, we apply genetic markers to assess whether field elm is or is not indigenous to the Balearic Islands. We compare the genetic variation in nine nuclear microsatellites of six Balearic populations (three in each of the largest islands, Majorca and Minorca) with that of three natural Iberian populations located in two regions, one geologically (Baetic mountains, SE Iberia) and another historically (Catalonia, NE Iberia) related to the islands. Principal coordinates analysis and Bayesian clustering methods reveal a strong genetic differentiation of the Balearic populations from the Iberian ones, and even among islands, which support their native origin. Genotypic variation in the islands is very low and clonal reproduction is very high compared with the mainland, as it is frequently observed in populations of clonal species where sexual reproduction is limited. We discuss the practical implications of these findings for the conservation of elm genetic resources of these findings.

In 2023, Andalusia, Catalonia, and Madrid were the autonomous communities with the highest number of deaths due to homicide in Spain, with 70, 68, and 33 deaths, respectively. These are also the most populated regions in the country and some of the ones most affected by crime. The number of deaths throughout Spain due to this type of aggression amounted to 309 that year, following a downward trend observed in recent years. Violent crime in Spain The country’s homicide rate has also seen a decrease, dropping from 0.9 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants in 2010 to 0.7 homicides per 100,000 population in 2022. In fact, Spain is one of the safest countries in Europe in terms of violent crime. In comparison, Latvia, the country with the highest homicide rate in the region, reached a rate of four cases per 100,000 inhabitants that year. Crime in Spain The most common type of crime in Spain is by far theft, with approximately 670,000 cases reported in 2023. Computer fraud and damage follow, with around 430,000 and 210,000 cases. Among the communities with the highest crime rate in the country are some urban regions and popular tourist destinations such as the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, and the Community of Madrid, while more rural regions tend to be less affected by crime.
