    Description
    About this dataset

    Context

The dataset tabulates the La Palma population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of La Palma across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.

    Key observations

In 2023, the population of La Palma was 15,029, a 1.14% decrease year-by-year from 2022. Previously, in 2022, La Palma population was 15,203, a decline of 1.22% compared to a population of 15,390 in 2021. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2023, population of La Palma decreased by 501. In this period, the peak population was 15,926 in the year 2003. The numbers suggest that the population has already reached its peak and is showing a trend of decline. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP).

    Description

As recorded by the source, Moroccans ranked as the foreign nationality with more residents in Spain in 2023, closely followed by Romanians. After years of losing its foreign population, Spain’s immigration figures started to pick up in 2015, with the number of people that moved to the Mediterranean country surpassing the number of foreigners that decided to leave.

A matter of balance The net migration rate of Spain changed its course mainly due to the great inflow of foreigners that move to reside in the Mediterranean country. Spain’s immigration flow slowed down after the 2008 financial crisis, albeit the number of foreigners that opted to change their residence saw a significant growth in the last years. In 2022, Colombians ranked first as the foreign nationality that most relocated to Spain, distantly followed by Moroccans and Ukranians.

Spain does not have the highest number of immigrants in Europe In recent years, the European Union confronted a rising number of refugees arriving from the Middle East. Migration figures show that Germany accommodated approximately 15 million foreign-born citizens, ranking it as the country that most hosted immigrants in Europe in 2022. By comparison, Spain’s foreign population stood slightly over seven million, positioning the Western Mediterranean country third on the European list of foreign-born population. Unfortunately, thousands of persons have died ore gone missing trying to reach Spanish territory, as more and more irregular migrants opt to use dangerous maritime routes to arrive at Southern Europe from Africa's coasts.

    Description

In 2022, the number of international tourists visiting the Balearic Islands surpassed 13 million, exhibiting a full recovery from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic's impact on inbound tourism. In 2020, inbound tourism numbers to the Mediterranean archipelago had plummeted below the two-million mark, after a decade of uninterrupted growth. Comprised of four main islands and a combined population of around 1.2 million people, this Spanish autonomous community is a popular holiday retreat for many Europeans.

    Sun and beach tourism

The Balearic Islands are famous for their sunny weather and stunning beaches with crystal-clear waters and white sand. In recent years, the average stay of international overnight visitors has been around a week, while the average spending for the entire trip has stayed above one thousand euros.

Contribution of tourism to the Balearic economy

In addition to the foreign visitors, this Spanish insular territory also receives more than two million domestic tourist arrivals each year, except during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in 2020. In that year, the contribution of the tourism sector to the Balearics’ gross domestic product (GDP) had fallen dramatically; and despite the growth of 95 percent in 2021, the share still did not reach the pre-pandemic level of more than 40 percent. The region earned close to 8.4 billion euros from tourism in 2021.

    Description

The aim of this study is to analyse the role played by E. maritimum in the dune pollination network of the Balearic Islands, where there is an intense anthropogenic impact in its habitat. For this purpose, two populations located in the North and South of Mallorca were chosen, in which diurnal transects were carried out to observe and capture pollinators on 15 plant species during the anthesis period of E. maritimum. The flowering period of 10 plant species flowering at the same period than E. maritimum was analysed to identify periods of competition First sampling area was located in Son Serra de Marina (SS, 39.7309N, 3.2382E), in the North of the island. Â We carried out three 50m linear transects along the seashore. Transects were randomly located at a minimum of 100 m from each other in order to enhance the chances of a fair sampling of most of the flora. In both areas, vegetation, and so transects, followed a clear sequence from the seashore inland. Areas were sampled for 10 weeks, ...
