    Description

Manchester United had an average attendance of only 526 for their home games in the 2020/21 season - this significant drop in attendance can be explained by the fact that many of the fixtures during this season were played behind closed doors as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Premier League bounced back strongest of all European soccer leagues in the 2021/22 season, reaching an average of close to 40 thousand spectators per match in the league.

    The Theatre of Dreams

Manchester United play their homes games at the largest stadium in the English Premier League: Old Trafford. The venue has a capacity of around 76,000 for soccer games, meaning the stadium is around 99 percent full for each home fixture. Manchester United have won an English record 20-top division titles, but were last crowned champions of England in 2012/13 – the club’s longest run without a league title since the English Premier League was formed in 1992/93. The average attendance at Old Trafford fell despite the cheapest matchday ticket for Manchester United being a competitively priced 31 British pounds in the 2019/20 season; the recent performances of the team may be one reason why some supporters were not tempted through the turnstiles.

    Glory, glory Man United

In financial terms, the club continues to grow regardless of recent on-field failings. The total revenue of Manchester United increased to around 796 million U.S. dollars in 2019, helped by annual rises in sponsorship revenue. Despite a relatively short league title drought, the club can still attract global partners and sign lucrative contracts because sponsors want to be associated with a brand that was ranked the sixth most valuable soccer club worldwide in 2020 – of the soccer teams on the list, only Spanish sides Real Madrid and Barcelona had a greater value.

    Description

The global football clubs market, valued at $913.92 million in 2025, is projected to experience robust growth, exceeding a 5% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) through 2033. This expansion is fueled by several key drivers. The increasing popularity of football globally, particularly in emerging markets in Asia and Latin America, is significantly boosting viewership and engagement, leading to higher revenue streams from broadcasting rights, sponsorships, and merchandise sales. The strategic investments by clubs in digital platforms and content creation to enhance fan engagement are also contributing to market growth. Furthermore, the lucrative nature of high-profile player transfers and the continuous expansion of global leagues, like the Premier League, La Liga, and others, are creating new opportunities for revenue generation. The market segmentation reveals the dominance of revenue streams from broadcasting rights and sponsorship deals, highlighting the increasing commercialization of the sport. While the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1 represent the major revenue generating leagues, other clubs worldwide are also witnessing growth, albeit at a smaller scale. Competition within the market is fierce, with top-tier clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester United, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich consistently leading the revenue generation. However, the market is not solely defined by these giants; successful mid-tier clubs are adopting innovative strategies to improve their financial standings, fostering a dynamic and competitive market. Potential restraints include economic downturns impacting sponsorship deals and broadcasting revenues, as well as regulatory changes and geopolitical factors. Nevertheless, the long-term prospects for the football clubs market remain exceptionally positive, driven by increasing globalization, technological advancements, and the enduring global passion for football. The market's continued growth will likely be shaped by strategic partnerships, digital innovation, and the ability of clubs to leverage their brand value effectively in a rapidly evolving media landscape. Recent developments include: September 2023: The Los Angeles Football Club announced the launch of LAFC Gold, a loyalty club designed to recognize LAFC’s most devoted supporters and fans with a host of unprecedented benefits. LAFC Gold is an innovative initiative that recognizes and acknowledges fans’ commitment to meaningful benefits and experiences, including merchandise discounts, partner promotions, premium experiences, and more, wherever they are around the globe., June 2022: PUMA, the global sports company, and Lega Serie launched a new football to mark the beginning of their partnership.. Key drivers for this market are: Active Participation. Potential restraints include: Active Participation. Notable trends are: Rising Active Participation in Football Leagues.

    Description

Over the five years through 2024-25, sports clubs' revenue is expected to inch down at a compound annual rate of 0.3% to £16.2 billion. This is primarily due to COVID-19 causing revenue to plunge by 21.3% in 2020-21. Despite this setback, the industry has rebounded, thanks to the growing popularity of the Premier League and increasing match-day revenue. Premier League football clubs are spearheading this growth, whose substantial investments have elevated the league's reputation and quality. The league's success in Europe, securing three Champions League titles since 2018-19, has also bolstered its reputation, spurring further sponsorship deals and revenue growth. The new Champions League format in 2024-25, which guarantees more games, has offered revenue another boost through higher match-day revenue. Although this has only impacted the biggest sports club, it should also have a knock-on effect on industry revenue. The surge in interest and success in women's sports has been a key driver of the industry's expansion in recent years. The strong performance of England women's national football team in the 2022 Euros (winners) and 2023 World Cup (runners-up) has intensified interest in women's football, increasing Women's Super League viewership and attendance supporting revenue. Consequently, revenue is expected to swell by 1.7% in 2024-25. Despite the strong revenue streams of large clubs, profitability is weak, with many of the larger clubs running on losses as they prioritise results over financial gains. Larger clubs stay viable by securing loans thanks to their size, while smaller clubs depend on donations and funding to continue operating. Over the five years through 2029-30, revenue is projected to expand at a compound annual rate of 2.2% to £18.1 billion. The new £6.7 billion broadcasting Premier League, which is set to begin from 2025-26, will increase revenue for many of the sports clubs in the Premier League. Women's football will continue to grow, propelling revenue. The new men's Champions League format will also continue to spark growth for top clubs, increasing the number of games being played and offering a fifth English club the chance to qualify from the qualifying round in the 2025-26 season. Increased investment from the government will also contribute to growth for smaller clubs over the next five years. For example, an additional £9 million from the government has been allocated to UK Sport to support British athletes in preparation for the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
