    Description

    Abstract

The study was conducted in Serbia between October 2008 and February 2009 as part of the first round of The Management, Organization and Innovation Survey. Data from 135 manufacturing companies with 50 to 5,000 full-time employees was analyzed.

The survey topics include detailed information about a company and its management practices - production performance indicators, production target, ways employees are promoted/dealt with when underperforming. The study also focuses on organizational matters, innovation, spending on research and development, production outsourcing to other countries, competition, and workforce composition.

    Analysis unit

The primary sampling unit of the study is the establishment. An establishment is a physical location where business is carried out and where industrial operations take place or services are provided. A firm may be composed of one or more establishments. For example, a brewery may have several bottling plants and several establishments for distribution. For the purposes of this survey an establishment is defined as a separate production unit, regardless of whether or not it has its own financial statements separate from those of the firm, and whether it has it own management and control over payroll. So the bottling plant of a brewery would be counted as an establishment.

    Universe

The survey universe was defined as manufacturing establishments with at least fifty, but less than 5,000, full-time employees.

    Kind of data

    Sample survey data [ssd]

    Sampling procedure

Random sampling was used in the study. For all MOI countries, except Russia, there was a requirement that all regions must be covered and that the percentage of the sample in each region was required to be equal to at least one half of the percentage of the sample frame population in each region.

In most countries the sample frame used was an extract from the Orbis database of Bureau van Dijk, which was provided to the Consultant by the EBRD. The sample frame contained details of company names, location, company size (number of employees), company performance measures and contact details. The sample frame downloaded from Orbis was cleaned by the EBRD through the addition of regional variables, updating addresses and phone numbers of companies.

Examination of the Orbis sample frames showed their geographic distributions to be wide with many locations, a large number of which had only a small number of records. Each establishment was selected with two substitutes that can be used if it proves impossible to conduct an interview at the first establishment. In practice selection was confined to locations with the most records in the sample frame, so the sample frame was filtered to just the cities with the most establishments.

The quality of the frame was assessed at the onset of the project. The frame proved to be useful though it showed positive rates of non-eligibility, repetition, non-existent units, etc. These problems are typical of establishment surveys. For Serbia, the percentage of confirmed non-eligible units as a proportion of the total number of contacts to complete the survey was 26.7% (82 out of 307 establishments).

    Mode of data collection

    Face-to-face [f2f]

    Research instrument

Two different versions of the questionnaire were used. Questionnaire A was used when interviewing establishments that are part of multiestablishment firms, while Questionnaire B was used when interviewing single-establishment firms. Questionnaire A incorporates all questions from Questionnaire B, the only difference is in the reference point, which is the so-called national firm in the first part of Questionnaire A and firm in Questionnaire B. Second part of the questionnaire refers to the interviewed establishment only in both Questionnaire A and Questionnaire B. Each variation of the questionnaire is identified by the index variable, a0.

    Response rate

Item non-response was addressed by two strategies: - For sensitive questions that may generate negative reactions from the respondent, such as ownership information, enumerators were instructed to collect the refusal to respond as (-8). - Establishments with incomplete information were re-contacted in order to complete this information, whenever necessary. However, there were clear cases of low response.

Survey non-response was addressed by maximising efforts to contact establishments that were initially selected for interviews. Up to 15 attempts (but at least 4 attempts) were made to contact an establishment for interview at different times/days of the week before a replacement establishment (with similar characteristics) was suggested for interview. Survey non-response did occur, but substitutions were made in order to potentially achieve the goals.

Additional information about sampling, response rates and survey implementation can be found in "MOI Survey Report on Methodology and Observations 2009" in "Technical Documents" folder.

The German chemical company BASF was ranked number one in the ranking of the world's leading chemical companies based on revenue, generating a revenue of approximately 68.03 billion U.S. dollars in 2024. Revenue of the top chemical companies worldwide Chemical companies produce and develop industrial chemicals through the conversion of raw materials –organic and inorganic - into a wide variety of products. Chemical production is classified into two separate categories. There are specialty batch manufacturers that produce more expensive chemicals that are less commonly used within the chemical market. These performance chemicals are often produced by smaller manufacturers. On the other hand, commodity manufacturers tend to produce a large volume of basic and inexpensive compounds. The production of organic polymers for plastics, fibers, and elastomers is a rapidly growing sector of the chemical industry. Leading chemical manufacturing countries The chemical manufacturing industry in the United States is quite prominent, with companies such as Dow, DuPont, and LyondellBasell Industries. The chemical sector in Europe is also very prominent, as demonstrated by the fact that it represents a great proportion of their manufacturing trade surplus. Europe (and the European Union) is one of the largest chemical trading regions in the world. With Germany accounting for the largest share of total EU chemical revenue. Three of Germany’s chemical companies are considered some of the largest in the world. German companies BASF and Bayer are consistently among the largest earning chemical companies in the world. BASF operates on a global scale and maintains its segmental operations in chemicals, materials, surface technologies, nutrition and care, industrial solutions, and agricultural solutions. With headquarters around the world, Bayer is known for marketing heroin in the past and branding aspirin.

Abstract copyright UK Data Service and data collection copyright owner.

The Business Structure Database (BSD) contains a small number of variables for almost all business organisations in the UK. The BSD is derived primarily from the Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR), which is a live register of data collected by HM Revenue and Customs via VAT and Pay As You Earn (PAYE) records. The IDBR data are complimented with data from ONS business surveys. If a business is liable for VAT (turnover exceeds the VAT threshold) and/or has at least one member of staff registered for the PAYE tax collection system, then the business will appear on the IDBR (and hence in the BSD). In 2004 it was estimated that the businesses listed on the IDBR accounted for almost 99 per cent of economic activity in the UK. Only very small businesses, such as the self-employed were not found on the IDBR.

The IDBR is frequently updated, and contains confidential information that cannot be accessed by non-civil servants without special permission. However, the ONS Virtual Micro-data Laboratory (VML) created and developed the BSD, which is a 'snapshot' in time of the IDBR, in order to provide a version of the IDBR for research use, taking full account of changes in ownership and restructuring of businesses. The 'snapshot' is taken around April, and the captured point-in-time data are supplied to the VML by the following September. The reporting period is generally the financial year. For example, the 2000 BSD file is produced in September 2000, using data captured from the IDBR in April 2000. The data will reflect the financial year of April 1999 to March 2000. However, the ONS may, during this time, update the IDBR with data on companies from its own business surveys, such as the Annual Business Survey (SN 7451).

The data are divided into 'enterprises' and 'local units'. An enterprise is the overall business organisation. A local unit is a 'plant', such as a factory, shop, branch, etc. In some cases, an enterprise will only have one local unit, and in other cases (such as a bank or supermarket), an enterprise will own many local units.

For each company, data are available on employment, turnover, foreign ownership, and industrial activity based on Standard Industrial Classification (SIC)92, SIC 2003 or SIC 2007. Year of 'birth' (company start-up date) and 'death' (termination date) are also included, as well as postcodes for both enterprises and their local units. Previously only pseudo-anonymised postcodes were available but now all postcodes are real.

The ONS is continually developing the BSD, and so researchers are strongly recommended to read all documentation pertaining to this dataset before using the data.

    Linking to Other Business Studies
These data contain IDBR reference numbers. These are anonymous but unique reference numbers assigned to business organisations. Their inclusion allows researchers to combine different business survey sources together. Researchers may consider applying for other business data to assist their research.

    Latest Edition Information
For the sixteenth edition (March 2024), data files and a variable catalogue document for 2023 have been added.

    Main Topics:

The following variables are available for enterprises and local units:
    • employment (and employees)
    • turnover
    • Standard Industrial Classification (1992, 2003 and 2007 classifications are available)
    • legal status (e.g. sole proprietor, partnership, public corporation, non-profit organisation etc)
    • foreign ownership
    • birth (company start date)
    • death (termination date of trading)
    • various geographical variables
'Employment' includes business owners, whereas 'employees' measures the number of staff, excluding owners.

Observations for enterprises also include a variable for ownership if the enterprise is part of a large group of companies.

Local units have an additional ‘death code’ variable, which serves as an indicator as to why the plant closed (e.g. as a result of a merger). It should also be noted that there is no turnover information for individual plants. This is because the ONS does not collect financial information at the plant level, which is notoriously difficult, especially for manufacturing plants where often no financial transactions are processed.

The birth and death variables are particularly useful for research, although it should be noted that for businesses that began trading before 1973, their birth date will be set to 1973. This is the year that VAT was introduced in the UK, and hence the first point in time for VAT registration for these companies. Companies that began trading since 1973 have their ‘real’ date of birth listed.

This listing also includes home-based businesses that participated in the 2022 employment survey. What is a NAIC code? The North American Industrial Classification (NAIC) coding system is a hierarchical classification system developed in Canada, Mexico and the United States. It was developed to allow for the comparison of business and employment information across a variety of industry categories. The NAICS has a hierarchical structure, designed as follows: Two-digits = sector (e.g., 31-33 contain the Manufacturing sectors) Three-digits = subsector (e.g., 336 = Transportation Equipment Manufacturing) Four-digits = industry group (e.g., 3361 = Motor Vehicle Manufacturing) Five-digits = industry (e.g., 33611 = Automobile and Light Duty Motor Vehicle Manufacturing) For more information on the NAIC coding system click here How do I add or update my business information in the York Region Business Directory? Description

The Business Structure Database is managed by the Secure Data Service (SDS) and can only be accessed through secure conditions. The ‘domestic use’ input-output matrix, contains domestic trade flows describing intermediate demand between Standard-Industrial-Classification (SIC) coded sectors. This was obtained from the ONS.

GRIT (‘Geospatial Restructuring of Industrial Trade’) is an ESRC-funded project in the School of Geography at the University of Leeds. An energy revolution must take place if the worst effects of climate change are to be avoided. Even without the impact this may have (eg through carbon pricing), fuel costs have a very uncertain future. GRIT has two aims:

create a fine-grained picture of the current spatial structure of the UK economy

consider how changing fuel prices could alter that structure over the long term. GRIT examines the web of connections between businesses in the UK to identify sectors and locations facing the greatest changes.

GRIT will work with a unique dataset: the Business Structure Database contains information for nearly every UK business, including location and sector classification. This will be linked to sectoral trade flow data. These two sources offer an opportunity to map the current spatial distribution of economic activity in the UK and to think about how that distribution may change in the future. GRIT combines this data-driven approach with a plan to engage with organisations directly affected. GRIT will work closely with a small number of organisations and engage others through the project website.
