    Description

    Context

I created these files and analysis as part of working on a case study for the Google Data Analyst certificate.

Question investigated: Do annual members and casual riders use Cyclistic bikes differently? Why do we want to know?: Knowing bike usage/behavior by rider type will allow the Marketing, Analytics, and Executive team stakeholders to design, assess, and approve appropriate strategies that drive profitability.

    Content

I used the script noted below to clean the files and then added some additional steps to create the visualizations to complete my analysis. The additional steps are noted in corresponding R Markdown file for this data set.

    Acknowledgements

Files: most recent 1 year of data available, Divvy_Trips_2019_Q2.csv, Divvy_Trips_2019_Q3.csv, Divvy_Trips_2019_Q4.csv, Divvy_Trips_2020_Q1.csv Source: Downloaded from https://divvy-tripdata.s3.amazonaws.com/index.html

Data cleaning script: followed this script to clean and merge files https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gUs7-pu4iCHH3PTtkC1pMvHfmyQGu0hQBG5wvZOzZkA/copy

Note: Combined data set has 3,876,042 rows, so you will likely need to run R analysis on your computer (e.g., R Console) rather than in the cloud (e.g., RStudio Cloud)

    Inspiration

This was my first attempt to conduct an analysis in R and create the R Markdown file. As you might guess, it was an eye-opening experience, with both exciting discoveries and aggravating moments.

One thing I have not yet been able to figure out is how to add a legend to the map. I was able to get a legend to appear on a separate (empty) map, but not on the map you will see here.

I am also interested to see what others did with this analysis - what were the findings and insights you found?

    Description

This dataset depicts the boundaries of the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM's) National Monuments (NMs) and National Conservation Areas (NCAs) in Arizona as part of the National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) data standards. The NLCS NM NCA dataset also depicts similar land designations such as Cooperative Management and Protection Areas, Forest Reserves, and Outstanding Natural areas. The NLCS NM NCA dataset is in progress as of April 30, 2019. Only the Gila Box Riparian NCA has completed the process of legal description, map creation, certification, and submittal to Congress. The remaining NMs and NCAs are awaiting the draft of legal descriptions. As legal descriptions are finalized and certified, the NLCS dataset may require updating to ensure that the spatial footprints of the NM and NCA boundary data match their respective legal descriptions. Once the boundaries are confirmed, no further changes to the NM/NCA boundary data should be made. Boundary changes can only be made through an amendment to the legal description and direct notification to Congress. The Antiquities Act of 1906 grants the President authority to designate national monuments in order to protect “objects of historic or scientific interest.” NCAs and similarly designated lands are designated by Congress to conserve, protect, enhance, and manage public lands for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations. In June 2000, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) responded to growing concern over the loss of open space by creating the NLCS. The NLCS brings into a single system some of the BLM's premier designations. By putting these lands into an organized system, the BLM hopes to increase public awareness of the scientific, cultural, educational, ecological, and other values of these NM/NCA boundaries. The Public Law (P.L.) 101-628 established Gila Box Riparian NCA; P.L. 106-538 established the Las Cienegas NCA (also Sonoita Valley Acquisition Planning District), and P.L. 100-696 established San Pedro Riparian NCA. Each of these laws required the BLM to file boundary legal descriptions and maps to Congress for each NCA. As of April 30, 2019, only the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area has completed legal description, map depiction, certification, and submission to Congress. All other NM/NCA have gone through review by Arizona field offices. Draft maps have been completed and are awaiting legal descriptions to be drafted with the exception of the Grand Canyon-Parashant NM. All proposed boundaries are included in this dataset. When legal descriptions are finalized and certified, minor updates may be necessary to ensure that the geospatial depiction of the NM/NCA boundary data matches the legal descriptions, after which no further changes to the geospatial NM/NCA boundary data should be made. The standards, format and language for the legal descriptions and boundary maps were developed during regular meetings of the NLCS Coordinator, geospatial specialists and the Cadastral Surveyors regarding Arizona NLCS data. Guidance was provided from Congressional required maps and legal boundary descriptions for the NLCS Designation Manual 6120 (March, 2010). Established through Presidential Proclamation, there is no requirement for BLM to file boundary legal descriptions or maps with Congress for the National Monument. However, the NLCS Coordinator and Cadastral Survey Chief decided that it was prudent to extend the boundary process to NMs.

    Description

Final approved map by the 2020 California Citizens Redistricting Commission for California's United States Congressional Districts; the authoritative and official delineations of California's United States Congressional Districts drawn during the 2020 redistricting cycle. The Citizens Redistricting Commission for the State of California has created statewide district maps for the State Assembly, State Senate, State Board of Equalization, and United States Congress in accordance, with the provisions of Article XXI of the California Constitution. The Commission has approved the final maps and certified them to the Secretary of State.Line drawing criteria included population equality as required by the U.S. Constitution, the Federal Voting Rights Act, geographic contiguity, geographic integrity, geographic compactness, and nesting. Geography was defined by U.S. Census Block geometry. Each of the 52 Congressional districts apportioned to California have an ideal population of 760,066, and the Commission adhered to federal constitutional mandates by requiring a district population deviation of no more than +/- one person. These districts also posed some of the Commission’s biggest challenges, and, because of strict population equality requirements, resulted in many more splits of counties, cities, neighborhoods, and communities of interest compared to State Assembly or Senate plans.

    Description

Final approved map by the 2020 California Citizens Redistricting Commission for the California State Senate; the authoritative and official delineations of the California State Senate drawn during the 2020 redistricting cycle. Each of the 40 Senate districts has an ideal population of nearly one million people and represents the largest state legislative districts in the nation. In consideration of population equality, the Commission chose to limit the population deviation as close to zero percent as practicable. Per the California Constitution, the Commission strived to nest two Assembly districts where practicable. However, higher ranking criteria made this difficult in practice. While the size of the Senate districts allowed the Commission to recognize broadly shared interests, these interests did not always overlap exactly with the interests of smaller communities recognized in the related Assembly districts. Based on the large number of people in each district, there were a variety of different interests that were balanced and included.
