The features in this layer represent the five-digit ZIP Code areas that are used by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver mail more effectively. This layer provides ZIP Code, postal district name, population, and area for the ZIP Code areas in California.

1. Zip code boundaries change, in ways small and large - these are not a stable analysis unit. Data you received keyed to zip codes may have used an earlier and very different boundary for your zip codes of interest.
2. Historically, the United States Postal Service has not published zip code boundaries, and instead, boundary datasets are compiled by third party vendors from address data. That means that the boundary data are not authoritative, and any data you have keyed to zip codes may use a different, vendor-specific method for generating boundaries from the data here.
3. Zip codes are designed to optimize mail delivery, not social, environmental, or demographic characteristics. Analysis using zip codes is subject to create issues with the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem that will bias any results because your units of analysis aren't designed for the data being studied.

The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (ZCTAs) are approximate area representations of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) ZIP Code service areas that the Census Bureau creates to present statistical data for each decennial census. Blocks that do not contain addresses but are surrounded by a single ZCTA (enclaves) are assigned to the surrounding ZCTA. Because the Census Bureau only uses the most frequently occurring ZIP Code to assign blocks, a ZCTA may not exist for every USPS ZIP Code. Some ZIP Codes may not have a matching ZCTA because too few addresses were associated with the specific ZIP Code or the ZIP Code was not the most frequently occurring ZIP Code within any of the blocks where it exists. The ZCTA boundaries in this release are those delineated following the 2020 Census.

This coverage can be used for basic applications such as viewing, querying, and map output production, or to provide a basemap to support graphical overlays and analyses of geospatial data.

This zip code layer was constructed by Nevada County GIS from voter registration rolls and Assessor Mailing Addresses. It is the best available data, but boundaries are not precise. Zip Codes 95712 (Chicago Park) and 95924 (Cedar Ridge) are for the US Post Office and PO boxes only. In Truckee, there is a 96160 Zip Code that is for PO Boxes only. This zip code is not included in this layer because the Truckee Post Office itself is zip 96161.

The first digit of a five-digit ZIP Code divides the United States into 10 large groups of states numbered from 0 in the Northeast to 9 in the far West. This dataset contains counts of deaths for California residents by ZIP Code based on information entered on death certificates. Final counts are derived from static data and include out-of-state deaths of California residents. The data tables include deaths of residents of California by ZIP Code of residence (by residence). The data are reported as totals, as well as stratified by age and gender. Deaths due to all causes (ALL) and selected underlying cause of death categories are provided. See temporal coverage for more information on which combinations are available for which years.

The cause of death categories are based solely on the underlying cause of death as coded by the International Classification of Diseases. The underlying cause of death is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as "the disease or injury which initiated the train of events leading directly to death, or the circumstances of the accident or violence which produced the fatal injury." It is a single value assigned to each death based on the details as entered on the death certificate. When more than one cause is listed, the order in which they are listed can affect which cause is coded as the underlying cause. This means that similar events could be coded with different underlying causes of death depending on variations in how they were entered. Consequently, while underlying cause of death provides a convenient comparison between cause of death categories, it may not capture the full impact of each cause of death as it does not always take into account all conditions contributing to the death.

Overview The PCCF+ is a SAS control program and set of associated datasets derived from the PCCF, a 2021 postal code population weight file, the Geographic Attribute File, Health Region boundary files, and other supplementary data. PCCF+ automatically assigns a range of Statistics Canada standard geographic areas and other geographic identifiers based on postal codes. PCCF+ differs from the PCCF in that it: Uses population-weighted random allocation for many postal codes that link to more than one geographic area. Options are available for institutional postal codes. Procedures are included to link partial postal codes to geographic identifiers where possible. Problem records and diagnostics are provided in the program output, along with reference information for possible solutions. The geographic coordinates, which represent the standard geostatistical areas linked to each postal code on the PCCF, are commonly used to map the distribution of data for spatial analysis (e.g., clients, activities). In April 1983, the Geography Division released the first version of the PCCF, which linked postal codes to 1981 census geographic areas and included geographic coordinates. PCCF+ was first created using the 1986 census and has been updated regularly with population weight files calculated for each census from 1991 through 2021. Purpose of PCCF+ The purpose of the PCCF+ is to provide a link between six-character postal codes produced by the Canada Post Corporation (CPC), standard 2021 Census geographic areas (such as dissemination areas, census subdivisions, and census tracts) produced by Statistics Canada, and supplementary administrative areas and neighbourhood income quintiles. Postal codes do not respect census geographic boundaries and so may be linked to more than one standard geographic area, or assigned to more than one set of coordinates. Therefore, one postal code may be represented by more than one record. The PCCF product, produced by Statistics Canada, provides links between postal codes and all recorded matches to census geography. PCCF+ uses the PCCF but provides additional functionality in that it uses a population-weighted matching process for some residential postal codes where more than one geographic code is possible. PCCF+ also provides routines for institutional postal codes and for historic postal codes. The PCCF+ Version 8B includes a population-weighting file calculated from the 2021 Census population counts Neighbourhood income quintiles and deciles have been calculated from 2021 Census population data. The routine that allowed geocoding of historical postal codes in British Columbia (V1H, V9G, prior 1998) has been removed.

Similarly, "Feat_Type" field is added and populated with water, ocean and land values. Five new data fields (FIP_CURRENT to CITYCOMM_CURRENT) are added in June 2023 updates to accommodate 2022 Santa Clarita city annexation. City/community names and FIP codes of census blocks affected by 2022 November Santa Clarita City annexation are assigned based on the location of block centroids. In June 2023 update, total of 36 blocks assigned to the City of Santa Clarita that were in Unincorporated Valencia and Castaic. Note: This data includes 3 NM ocean (FEAT_TYPE field).
