    Description

    This data set describes Neighborhood Clusters that have been used for community planning and related purposes in the District of Columbia for many years. It does not represent boundaries of District of Columbia neighborhoods. Cluster boundaries were established in the early 2000s based on the professional judgment of the staff of the Office of Planning as reasonably descriptive units of the City for planning purposes. Once created, these boundaries have been maintained unchanged to facilitate comparisons over time, and have been used by many city agencies and outside analysts for this purpose. (The exception is that 7 “additional” areas were added to fill the gaps in the original dataset, which omitted areas without significant neighborhood character such as Rock Creek Park, the National Mall, and the Naval Observatory.) The District of Columbia does not have official neighborhood boundaries. The Office of Planning provides a separate data layer containing Neighborhood Labels that it uses to place neighborhood names on its maps. No formal set of standards describes which neighborhoods are included in that dataset.Whereas neighborhood boundaries can be subjective and fluid over time, these Neighborhood Clusters represent a stable set of boundaries that can be used to describe conditions within the District of Columbia over time.

    Description

    This dataset was created by the DC Office of Planning and provides a simplified representation of the neighborhoods of the District of Columbia. These boundaries are used by the Office of Planning to determine appropriate locations for placement of neighborhood names on maps. They do not reflect detailed boundary information, do not necessarily include all commonly-used neighborhood designations, do not match planimetric centerlines, and do not necessarily match Neighborhood Cluster boundaries. There is no formal set of standards that describes which neighborhoods are represented or where boundaries are placed. These informal boundaries are not appropriate for display, calculation, or reporting. Their only appropriate use is to guide the placement of text labels for DC's neighborhoods. This is an informal product used for internal mapping purposes only. It should be considered draft, will be subject to change on an irregular basis, and is not intended for publication.

    This dataset contains polygons that represent the boundaries of statistical neighborhoods as defined by the DC Department of Health (DC Health). DC Health delineates statistical neighborhoods to facilitate small-area analyses and visualization of health, economic, social, and other indicators to display and uncover disparate outcomes among populations across the city. The neighborhoods are also used to determine eligibility for some health services programs and support research by various entities within and outside of government. DC Health Planning Neighborhood boundaries follow census tract 2010 lines defined by the US Census Bureau. Each neighborhood is a group of between one and seven different, contiguous census tracts. This allows for easier comparison to Census data and calculation of rates per population (including estimates from the American Community Survey and Annual Population Estimates). These do not reflect precise neighborhood locations and do not necessarily include all commonly-used neighborhood designations. There is no formal set of standards that describes which neighborhoods are included in this dataset. Note that the District of Columbia does not have official neighborhood boundaries. Origin of boundaries: each neighborhood is a group of between one and seven different, contiguous census tracts. They were originally determined in 2015 as part of an analytical research project with technical assistance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Council for State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) to define small area estimates of life expectancy. Census tracts were grouped roughly following the Office of Planning Neighborhood Cluster boundaries, where possible, and were made just large enough to achieve standard errors of less than 2 for each neighborhood's calculation of life expectancy. The resulting neighborhoods were used in the DC Health Equity Report (2018) with updated names. HPNs were modified slightly in 2019, incorporating one census tract that was consistently suppressed due to low numbers into a neighboring HPN (Lincoln Park incorporated into Capitol Hill). Demographic information were analyzed to identify the bordering group with the most similarities to the single census tract. A second change split a neighborhood (GWU/National Mall) into two to facilitate separate analysis.

    Why This Matters

    Urban green spaces provide an array of health benefits, including protection from extreme heat, reducing stress and anxiety, and offering a place to stay physically active.

    Parks can serve as a social gathering space in neighborhoods, offering a location for residents to host events, play sports, and connect with their neighbors. This benefit can be particularly beneficial for elderly individuals as they are more likely to suffer from social isolation.

    While the District is considered a national leader in park equity today, this has not always been the case. Until 1954, many DC parks and playgrounds were segregated, either prohibiting their use by Black residents or only allowing them to be used during certain hours.

    The District Response

    The District consistently ranks well nationally for park equity, receiving a higher Trust for Public Land ParkScore®rating than any other city for four consecutive years (2021-2024). Unlike most cities in the US, District residents have access to a similar amount of park space regardless of their neighborhood’s racial demographics.

    The District Department of Transportation’s Urban Forestry Division is on track to reach a goal of tree canopy coverage for 40% of the District, promoting better air quality and cooling our neighborhoods. Residents can also request the planting of a new street tree near them.

    The Department of Parks and Recreation and the Department of General Services are modernizing and renovating parks across the District to improve park services, safety, and utilization.

    This dataset contains areal locations for Major Area Pans as established by the DC Office of Planning. Below are brief descriptions about each area. 1. Benning Road: The study area starts at the Starburst intersection, where Florida Avenue, Bladensburg Road and BenningRoad NE meet, and continues to the Maryland border at Southern Avenue, passing through Wards 5, 6 and 7 along the way. 2. Brookland/CUA Metro Station Area Plan: The boundaries for the immediate Small Area Plan study area for Brookland generally are Taylor Street to the north, 13th street to the east, Rhode Island Avenue to the South and 7th Street to Michigan Avenue to John McCormack Road to the west. 3. Deanwood Strategic Development Plan: The project area consists of Eastern Avenue to the Northeast, 55th Street NE to the East, Marvin Gaye Park to the South, and Kenilworth Avenue/CSX railway to the West. 4. Georgia Avenue - Petworth Metro Station Area Corridor Plan: Project area includes all properties fronting Georgia Avenue, from Decatur Street to Euclid Street in Ward 1; and encompasses approximately 40 blocks. The 4 neighborhood areas are defined as follows: -Upshur (Decatur Street to Shepherd Street) -Petworth-Metro (Shepherd Street to Otis Place) -Park View/Park Morton (Otis Place to Irving Street) -Pleasant Plains (Irving Street to Euclid Street) 5. Kennedy Street: Properties fronting on Kennedy from Georgia to North Capitol Street N. 6. Pennsylvania Avenue SE Land Development Plan: The study area includes all properties fronting on Pennsylvania Avenue SE from Independence Avenue SE/2nd Street SE eastward to Southern Avenue. The study area is more than three miles long and runs through parts of Wards 6, 7, and 8 in the District of Columbia. There are six sub areas located along the study area including: -Southern Avenue to Alabama Avenue (Ward 7) -Alabama Avenue to Branch Avenue (Ward 7) -Branch Avenue to 28th Street (Ward 7) -28th Street to the Sousa Bridge (Ward 8) -Sousa Bridge to 11th Street (Ward 6) -11th Street to 2nd Avenue/Independence Avenue (Ward 6) 7. Riggs Road / South Dakota Avenue: The Office of Planning will undertake a community planning process with area stakeholders (including residents, ANCs, neighborhood organizations, Council staff, businesses, property owners, institutions and government agencies) to develop a Strategic Development Plan and Revitalization strategy for the properties within Wards 4 and 5 within a ¼ mile radius surrounding the Riggs Road and South Dakota Avenue NE intersection. This includes Fort Totten Metro Station. 8. Upper Georgia Avenue Land Development Plan: Project boundaries extends from Decatur Street on the south to Eastern Avenue on the north, including properties along Georgia Avenue from one block to the east and west. 9. St. Elizabeths East Redevelopment Framework Plan: Corner of MLK SE and the alley 1 block north of Lebaum St. SE. Go southeast until Alabama Ave, SE and follow Alabama Ave to just passed the Congress Heights Metro. Head north to corner of Hebrew Cemetery boundary then northeast until Bruce St, SE. Finally, go northwest to intersect with MLK, SE just south of Pomeroy Rd, SE. 10. Anacostia Transit Area Strategic Investment Redevelopment Plan: The study area for the Anacostia Transit Area Framework Plan extends between Fort Stanton Park and Anacostia Park on the east and west, and Good Hope Road and Stevens Road SE on the north and south. 11. Convention Center Area Strategic Development Plan: Bounded by New York Avenue, Massachusetts Avenue, 12th Street, Vermont Avenue, U Street, Florida Avenue, and New Jersey Avenue. The area includes Logan Circle, French Street, Westminster Street, Blagden Alley, O Street Market, East Central, and MountVernon Square. 12. Uptown Destination District Plan (DUKE): Project boundaries Barry Place NW to the north; 6th Street NW to the east; Rhode Island Avenue to the south; and 13th Street to the west. 13. H Street Revitalization Plan: The project boundaries extend along H Street NE from North Capitol Street to 17th Street NE. (13 blocks). 14. Takoma Central District Plan: Project boundaries are defined by the area between Chestnut Street to the north, Eastern Avenue to the east, 4th 5th Streets to the west, and Aspen Laurel Streets to the south.

    A web map used for the Police Service Area Details web application.

    In addition to Police Districts, every resident lives in a Police Service Area (PSA), and every PSA has a team of police officers and officials assigned to it. Residents should get to know their PSA team members and learn how to work with them to fight crime and disorder in their neighborhoods. Each police district has between seven and nine PSAs. There are a total of 56 PSAs in the District of Columbia.

    Printable PDF versions of each district map are available on the district pages. Residents and visitors may also access the PSA Finder to easily locate a PSA and other resources within a geographic area. Just enter an address or place name and click the magnifying glass to search, or just click on the map. The results will provide the geopolitical and public safety information for the address; it will also display a map of the nearest police station(s).

    Each Police Service Area generally holds meetings once a month. To learn more about the meeting time and location in your PSA, please contact your Community Outreach Coordinator. To reach a coordinator, choose your police district from the list below. The coordinators are included as part of each district's Roster.

    Description

    The database for the Washington West 30- by 60-minute quadrangle covers an area of approximately 4,884 square kilometers (1,343 square miles) in and west of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. The eastern part of the area is highly urbanized, and more rural areas to the west are rapidly being developed. The area lies entirely within the Chesapeake Bay drainage basin and mostly within the Potomac River watershed. It contains part of the Nation's main north-south transportation corridor east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, consisting of Interstate Highway 95, U.S. Highway 1, and railroads, as well as parts of the Capital Beltway and Interstate Highway 66. Extensive Federal land holdings in addition to those in Washington, D.C., include the Marine Corps Development and Education Command at Quantico, Fort Belvoir, Vint Hill Farms Station, the Naval Ordnance Station at Indian Head, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historic Park, Great Falls Park, and Manassas National Battlefield Park. The quadrangle contains most of Washington, D.C.; part or all of Arlington, Culpeper, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William, Rappahannock, and Stafford Counties in northern Virginia; and parts of Charles, Montgomery, and Prince Georges Counties in Maryland. The Washington West quadrangle spans four geologic provinces. From west to east these provinces are the Blue Ridge province, the early Mesozoic Culpeper basin, the Piedmont province, and the Coastal Plain province. There is some overlap in ages of rocks in the Blue Ridge and Piedmont provinces. The Blue Ridge province, which occupies the western part of the quadrangle, contains metamorphic and igneous rocks of Mesoproterozoic to Early Cambrian age. Mesoproterozoic (Grenville-aged) rocks are mostly granitic gneisses, although older meta-igneous rocks are found as xenoliths. Small areas of Neoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks nonconformably overlie Mesoproterozoic rocks. Neoproterozoic granitic rocks of the Robertson River Igneous Suite intruded the Mesoproterozoic rocks. The Mesoproterozoic rocks are nonconformably overlain by Neoproterozoic metasedimentary rocks of the Fauquier and Lynchburg Groups, which in turn are overlain by metabasalt of the Catoctin Formation. The Catoctin Formation is overlain by Lower Cambrian clastic metasedimentary rocks of the Chilhowee Group. The Piedmont province is exposed in the east-central part of the map area, between overlapping sedimentary units of the Culpeper basin on the west and those of the Coastal Plain province on the east. In this area, the Piedmont province contains Neoproterozoic and lower Paleozoic metamorphosed sedimentary, volcanic, and plutonic rocks. Allochthonous mélange complexes on the western side of the Piedmont are bordered on the east by metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks of the Chopawamsic Formation, which has been interpreted as part of a volcanic arc. The mélange complexes are unconformably overlain by metasedimentary rocks of the Popes Head Formation. The Silurian and Ordovician Quantico Formation is the youngest metasedimentary unit in this part of the Piedmont (Pavlides and others, 1980). Igneous rocks include the Garrisonville Mafic Complex, transported ultramafic and mafic inclusions in mélanges, monzogranite of the Dale City pluton, and Ordovician tonalitic and granitic plutons. Jurassic diabase dikes are the youngest intrusions. The fault boundary between rocks of the Blue Ridge and Piedmont provinces is concealed beneath the Culpeper basin in this area but is exposed farther south (Mixon and others, 2000). Early Mesozoic rocks of the Culpeper basin unconformably overlie those of the Piedmont and Blue Ridge provinces in the central part of the quadrangle. The north-northeast-trending extensional basin contains Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic nonmarine sedimentary rocks. Lower Jurassic sedimentary strata are interbedded with basalt flows, and both Upper Triassic and Lower Jurassic strata are intruded by diabase of Early Jurassic age. The Bull Run Mountain fault, a major Mesozoic normal fault characterized by down-to-the-east displacement, separates rocks of the Culpeper basin from those of the Blue Ridge province on the west. On the east, the contact between rocks of the Culpeper basin and those of the Piedmont province is an unconformity which has been locally disrupted by normal faults. Sediments of the Coastal Plain province unconformably overlie rocks of the Piedmont province along the Fall Zone and occupy the eastern part of the quadrangle. Lower Cretaceous deposits of the Potomac Formation consist of fluvial-deltaic gravels, sands, silts, and clays. Discontinuous fluvial and estuarine terrace deposits of Pleistocene and middle to late Tertiary age flank the modern Potomac River valley unconformably capping these Cretaceous strata and the crystalline basement where the Cretaceous has been removed by erosion. East of the Potomac River, the Potomac Formation is onlapped and unconformably overlain by a westward thinning wedge of marine sedimentary deposits of Late Cretaceous and early and late Tertiary age. Basement rooted Coastal Plain faults of Tertiary to Quaternary age occur along the Fall Zone and this part of the inner Coastal Plain. These Coastal Plain faults have geomorphic expression that appear to influence river drainage patterns (Mixon and others, 1972; Seiders and Mixon, 1981; Fleming and others, 1994).

    Wooded Area. The dataset contains polygons representing planimetric wooded areas, created as part of the DC Geographic Information System (DC GIS) for the D.C. Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO). These features were originally captured in 1999 and updated in 2005, 2008, and 2010.     Data Note from the Census:
    Data are based on a sample and are subject to sampling variability. The degree of uncertainty for an estimate arising from sampling variability is represented through the use of a margin of error. The value shown here is the 90 percent margin of error. The margin of error can be interpreted as providing a 90 percent probability that the interval defined by the estimate minus the margin of error and the estimate plus the margin of error (the lower and upper confidence bounds) contains the true value. In addition to sampling variability, the ACS estimates are subject to nonsampling error (for a discussion of nonsampling variability, see Accuracy of the Data). The effect of nonsampling error is not represented in these tables.

    Data Processing Notes:
    • Boundaries come from the US Census TIGER geodatabases, specifically, the National Sub-State Geography Database (named tlgdb(year)a_us_substategeo.gdb). Boundaries are updated at the same time as the data updates (annually), and the boundary vintage appropriately matches the data vintage as specified by the Census. These are Census boundaries with water and/or coastlines erased for cartographic and mapping purposes. For census tracts, the water cutouts are derived from a subset of the 2020 Areal Hydrography boundaries offered by TIGER. Water bodies and rivers which are 50 million square meters or larger (mid to large sized water bodies) are erased from the tract level boundaries, as well as additional important features. For state and county boundaries, the water and coastlines are derived from the coastlines of the 2020 500k TIGER Cartographic Boundary Shapefiles. These are erased to more accurately portray the coastlines and Great Lakes. The original AWATER and ALAND fields are still available as attributes within the data table (units are square meters).
    • The States layer contains 52 records - all US states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico
    • Census tracts with no population that occur in areas of water, such as oceans, are removed from this data service (Census Tracts beginning with 99).
    • Percentages and derived counts, and associated margins of error, are calculated values (that can be identified by the "_calc_" stub in the field name), and abide by the specifications <a

    Description

    Trash day boundaries in the supercan trash collection area of Washington DC. The day boundaries are the areas where trash and recycling collection takes place on a particular day. There are several routes within each day boundary. Each crew is assigned to collect either trash or recycling in one route per day. Supercan trash collection refers to the type of trash container used by the residents for setting out trash. Supercans are 96 gallon containers that are distributed by the City to citizens in residential (less urban and therefore less dense) neighborhoods that form the outer ring portion of the City. The routes within these day boundaries are collected once per week. Recycling containers are blue 35 gallon containers that are distributed to citizens in these same areas.

    Description

    This data reflects areas with a risk of storm tide flooding from hurricanes, based on potential storm tide heights calculated by the National Weather Service's SLOSH (Sea, Lake, and Overland Surge from Hurricanes) Model. The SLOSH Basin used for mapping was Chesapeake Bay (CP5), released in 2014. This data was prepared by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District, Planning Division in January 2016. SLOSH storm tide elevations used for this mapping are based on the Maximum of Maximums (MOM) SLOSH output dataset. The MOM output elevations represent the highest calculated storm tide values based on thousands of SLOSH simulations using different combinations of approach direction, forward speed, landfall point, astronomical tide, and intensity (Category 1 through Category 4). Categories 1 through 4 refer to the Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricane intensity. This map does not reflect the expected storm tide flooding for every hurricane, or for any one particular type of hurricane. This map shows the overall footprint of the area that has some risk of storm tide flooding from hurricanes, based on the MOM output dataset.

Description

This data set describes Neighborhood Clusters that have been used for community planning and related purposes in the District of Columbia for many years. It does not represent boundaries of District of Columbia neighborhoods. Cluster boundaries were established in the early 2000s based on the professional judgment of the staff of the Office of Planning as reasonably descriptive units of the City for planning purposes. Once created, these boundaries have been maintained unchanged to facilitate comparisons over time, and have been used by many city agencies and outside analysts for this purpose. (The exception is that 7 “additional” areas were added to fill the gaps in the original dataset, which omitted areas without significant neighborhood character such as Rock Creek Park, the National Mall, and the Naval Observatory.) The District of Columbia does not have official neighborhood boundaries. The Office of Planning provides a separate data layer containing Neighborhood Labels that it uses to place neighborhood names on its maps. No formal set of standards describes which neighborhoods are included in that dataset.Whereas neighborhood boundaries can be subjective and fluid over time, these Neighborhood Clusters represent a stable set of boundaries that can be used to describe conditions within the District of Columbia over time.
