    Description

This statistic depicts organic food sales in the United States from 2005 to 2023. In 2023, organic food sales in the United States amounted to about 63.8 billion U.S. dollars.

    Organic food

Organic foods are foods that are manufactured using organic farming standards. Those agricultural standards are regulated by the department of government responsible for them and contain regulations for the cultivation of food and animal welfare. In particular, the use of chemical fertilizers, synthetic pesticides, growth hormones and antibiotics is not allowed or only partly permitted. In addition, fewer food additives are permitted for the processing of organic foods. In the United States, organic foods are certified by the National Organic Program. Products which have fulfilled the criteria are labeled with the term ‘organic’ on the food packaging.

Organic food sales have experienced tremendous growth in the last decade. For this reason, not only specialized retailers sell organic foods but also traditional supermarkets and discounters. Widely known specialized organic retailers in the United States include Whole Foods Market and Sprouts Farmers Market. Whole Foods Market is the largest specialized organic retailer in the United States with headquarters in Austin, Texas. It was founded in 1980 and operates more than 472 stores around the world.

In general, organic foods are usually offered at a higher price level than their conventional counterparts.

Among Millennials, the by now largest generation in the U.S., a sizeable share of almost 40 percent count organic food as one of their leading food priorities.

Whether or not organic foods are healthier and more nutritious compared to conventionally farmed produce is a much debated subject. Up to now, no evidence of significant differences between the two farming methods where taste or health are concerned has been established.

Consumers are also concerned about the potential health risks associated with the use of chemical fertilizers, growth hormones, and synthetic pesticides in conventional farming. These concerns have led to a preference for organic dairy products, processed food products free from synthetic preservatives, and organic beverages. The organic farming methods used in organic agriculture promote soil health, water resources, and wildlife habitats, making it a more sustainable alternative to conventional farming practices. Despite the premium pricing and shorter shelf life of organic produce, consumers are willing to pay for the health benefits and environmental sustainability it offers. The market for organic food is diverse, with demand coming from various segments including pregnant ladies, vegan culture, low-fat diet followers, and those on specialty or niche diets. Organic produce can be found in specialty stores, farmers' markets, and even mainstream supermarkets, as well as through express delivery services and online distribution channels. However, regulatory support and supply trade regulations are crucial to ensuring the authenticity and quality of organic products.

    Description

The global sales of organic food have increased between 2000 and 2023. In 2023, sales of organic food amounted to about 136.3 billion U.S. dollars, up from nearly 18 billion dollars in 2000. Organic agriculture What constitutes organic food can vary significantly depending on the country and certifier, but it often refers to crops grown without artificial pesticides, genetic modifications, or petroleum-based fertilizers. For meat, dairy, and eggs to be labelled as organic, the animals must be raised on organic feed, given adequate time outdoors, and not fed growth hormones. In 2022, there were over 96 million hectares of organic farms worldwide. In India alone there were nearly 2.5 million organic food producers, more than any other country. Organic food in the United States North America accounts for nearly half of the retail sales of organic food worldwide, making it the largest market for organic food aside from Europe, with most of that being attributed to the United States. Organic food in the United States has occupied a greater share of the total food sales every year since 2008. In 2020, about six percent of total food sales in the United States were generated by organic food.

Denmark and Switzerland had the highest per capita consumption of organic food of any country in the world in 2022. That year, the average Swiss and Danish consumer purchased around 437 and 365 euros of organic food, respectively. Luxemburg also ranked highly in terms of organic food consumption in that year.

Organic farming What constitutes food as “organic” is a subject of contention. Different organizations and certifiers have differing criteria on what counts as organic, but perhaps the broadest definition of organic food is food that has been grown without artificial fertilizers, pesticides, chemicals, or GMOs. The area of land used for organic farming has increased substantially over the last several years, amounting to over 76 million hectares worldwide in 2021, expanding by about 26 million hectares since 2015.

Organic food and U.S. consumers Organic food is readily available in many grocery stores and supermarkets across the United States. . Two of the biggest organic food categories are fresh produce and dairy. In 2021, retail sales of organic fruit and vegetables amounted to 21 billion U.S. dollars, more than any other individual food category.
