Over the period from 2014 to 2024, the number of marriages in Finland declined overall. In 2024, approximately 21,400 marriages were formed in Finland. Compared with 2014, the annual number of marriages entered has decreased by almost 5,000.

In the period from 2010 to 2020, the average age for men to get married in Finland increased by 2.1 years. As of 2020, men were on average 34.7 years old when entering into their first marriage. By comparison, the average age for women to get married was 32.6 years.

Caterers have endured a period of high revenue volatility amid the recovery of COVID-19 disruptions and subsequent inflationary and geopolitical pressures, which have affected consumer and business spending on functions and events. Evolving consumer tastes and trends, like healthier eating and vegetarianism, are driving change in the products offered by caterers. Marriage rates across Europe are dipping, leading to a diluted demand for wedding caterers. The low rates were compounded by restrictions during the COVID-19 outbreak, with many couples forced to postpone their weddings, while other private and corporate events were cancelled, leading to a low revenue base in 2020. Nevertheless, the gradual easing of restrictions in 2021 and complete removal in 2022 allowed postponed events to take place, providing a boost to revenue. As wider economic conditions affect business and consumer confidence and spending on catering, recent inflationary pressures, geopolitical tensions and trade war fears have heightened uncertainty, weakening revenue growth over the three years through 2025. With greater health consciousness and concern for the environment, demand for caterers offering healthier, locally sourced and organic options is climbing. Catering services are also now required to be more inclusive of different dietary preferences, including vegetarianism and veganism, encouraging caterers to innovate and differentiate their offerings to keep up with competitors. Revenue is forecast to swell at a compound annual rate of 10.5% to €41.9 billion over the five years through 2030. While anticipated improvement in economic conditions will boost confidence and disposable income, leading to a better climate for the catering industry, subdued marriage rates will likely continue to limit demand for wedding catering. A more optimistic economic environment may encourage consumers and businesses to hold larger, more lavish events, driving revenue growth. Caterers will face challenges from intensifying competition and ever-changing consumer preferences, hindering profit growth. As such, diversification will play a key role, with caterers needing to innovate their offerings and come up with more personalised services, while also effectively dabbling in social media usage to engage with customers and enhance their brand image to stand out from the crowd. Caterers will also be likely to invest in making their operations more sustainable and achieve efficiencies through the use of technology.

In 2022, the most common family type in Finland was a married couple without children. The number of married couples with children has decreased for several decades, while the number of married couples without children has been on the rise.

After the amendment to the Marriage Act in March 2017, many registered partners changed their partnership into a marriage and new registered partnerships can no longer be formed.

In the period from 2010 to 2020, the average age at first divorce slightly increased for both genders in Finland. In 2020, men were on average 43.4 years old and women 41.1 years old at the time of their first divorce. That year, approximately 13,500 marriages ended in divorce in Finland.

According to the 2020 UNIDOMO questionnaire, Portugal clearly led the list of European countries with the highest divorce rate per 100 marriages. With 91.5 divorces the Portuguese Republic led the list, followed by Spain and Luxembourg. All three countries boast a significantly higher share than the other European countries, each reporting a divorce rate over 80 divorces.

A different way to look at Portugal

While Portugal clearly has the most divorces per 100 marriages, looking at divorce rates per 1.000 inhabitants in other European countries alters the picture of the country as one unsettled by significant numbers of divorces. With nearly 1.7 divorces per 1,000 inhabitants Portugal has roughly the same divorce rate as Germany and the Netherlands. Interesting is furthermore that although marriages in Portugal tend to result in divorce lightly more often as in Luxembourg (80.3%), the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg experienced a 0.6 point higher divorce rate.

What about the rest of the World?

While compared with Latin American countries like Guatemala or Peru, ranked among the countries with the lowest divorce rates in the world, Luxembourg’s divorce rate seems excessive. However, when compared with divorce rates (per 1.000 inhabitants) of countries like the United States (2.7) or China (3.5) divorce rates from Luxembourg and Europe are not out of the ordinary.

In Finland, Norway, and Sweden, the number of marriages decreased from 2011 to 2021, whereas it fluctuated more in Denmark and Iceland. Moreover, following the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of marriages in all five countries dropped in 2020 and 2021, although the decrease was only minor in Norway. Sweden, which has the largest population in the region, also has the highest number of marriages, whereas Iceland, which has the lowest number of inhabitants, also has the lowest number of marriages.
