Open the Data Resource: https://cicgis.org/portal/apps/storymaps/stories/b519e88ccc8c4c4c8d4c870f64e210ed Forest conservation and tree planting are central strategies to achieve the goals laid out in the 2014 Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement and are reinforced in many parts of the Maryland legal code. To monitor forest and tree canopy cover status and progress toward its commitments, the Maryland General Assembly enacted legislation (House Bill 991) in 2021 requiring a Technical Study of Changes in Maryland’s Forest Cover and Tree Canopy. The Maryland Forest Technical Study Story Map presents the results of this study, which improves Maryland’s statewide inventory of forest and tree canopy cover, assesses near and long-term change and assesses the effectiveness of forest and tree programs operating in the state. Notably, this study makes use of a newly released, innovative, very high-resolution (1-m) land use and land cover dataset for the Chesapeake Bay watershed, used for the first time to monitor individual trees within and outside forests across Maryland. This is complemented by moderate-resolution satellite imagery, ground observations and other research to generate insights on the status of tree canopy cover in the state.

    Description

The map was developed using available parcel polygons attributed with tax assessment data as of project initiation in early 2020, Computer-Assisted Mass Appraisal (CAMA) data dated February 2020, and the Chesapeake Bay Program’s 2017/18 Land Use Land Cover data (2022 edition), subsequently referred to as “CBP LULC.” The map also incorporates land use datasets provided by county and municipal jurisdictions to the extent possible while maintaining standard statewide classification definitions and rules. The product was developed to be consistent with the 2018 National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery and CBP LULC dataset. MDP’s draft updated land use classification scheme is available as a separate document. This product is a beta release for public use and further testing. Methods for developing subsequent releases beyond this 2018 baseline will be refined based on feedback from the user community. Urban Land Uses 11 Low-density residential - Detached single-family/duplex dwelling units, yards, and associated areas. Includes generalized areas with lot sizes of less than five acres but at least one-half acre (0.2 to 2 dwelling units/acre). 12 Medium-density residential - Detached single-family/duplex, attached single-unit row housing, yards, and associated areas Includes generalized areas with lot sizes of less than one-half acre but at least one-eighth acre (2 to 8 dwelling units/acre). 13 High-density residential - Attached single-unit row housing, garden apartments, high-rise apartments/condominiums, mobile home and trailer parks, yards, and associated areas. Includes generalized areas with more than eight dwelling units per acre. This may include subsidized housing. 14 Commercial - Retail and wholesale services. Areas used primarily for the sale of products and services, including associated yards and parking areas. This category may include airports, welcome houses, telecommunication towers, and boat marinas. 15 Industrial - Manufacturing and industrial parks, including associated warehouses, storage yards, research laboratories, and parking areas. Warehouses that are returned by a commercial query should be categorized as industrial. This also includes power plants. 16 Institutional - Elementary and secondary schools, middle schools, junior and senior high schools, public and private colleges and universities, military installations (built-up areas only, including buildings and storage, training, and similar areas), churches, medical and health facilities, correctional facilities, government offices and facilities that are clearly separable from any surrounding natural or agricultural land cover, and other non-profit uses. 17 Extractive - Surface mining operations, including sand and gravel pits, quarries, coal surface mines, and deep coal mines. Status of activity (active vs. abandoned) is not distinguished. 18 Open urban land - Includes parks, open spaces, recreational areas not classified as institutional, golf courses, and cemeteries. Includes only built-up and turf-dominated areas that are clearly separable from any surrounding natural or agricultural land cover. 190 – Very Low Density Residential – Clustered residential parcels that have lot sizes less than 20 acres but at least five acres (0.2 to 0.05 dwelling units/acre) 50 – Water 80 Transportation - Transportation features include impervious roads, roadway rights-of-way, and parcels primarily containing light rail or metro stations and park-and-ride lots. 99 – Other Land - Remaining land not covered under another category. Examples include but are not limited to unbuilt lots, rural land, single-family residential parcels greater than or equal to 20 acres in size, and undeveloped portions of large parcels containing urban uses. May include undeveloped land that is either developable or constrained from further development.Note: Urban Land Use classifications encompass the entire parcel on parcels less than five acres that contain a structure as of 2018 based on the Maryland Department of Planning and Maryland State Department of Assessment and Taxation’s Computer-Assisted Mass Appraisal (CAMA) Building dataset. Elsewhere, the Chesapeake Bay Program’s 2017/18 Land Use Land Cover dataset (2022 edition) is used to delineate the extent of development on a parcel. Description

High resolution land cover dataset for Baltimore County/metro area, MD. Seven land cover classes were mapped: (1) tree canopy, (2) grass/shrub, (3) bare earth, (4) water, (5) buildings, (6) roads, and (7) other paved surfaces. The minimum mapping unit for the delineation of features was set at 104 square feet. The primary sources for this land cover layer were 2004 pan-sharpened 1m Ikonos satellite imagery, a normalized Digital Surface Model (nDSM) derived from 2006 LiDAR data, and LiDAR intensity data resulting from the 2006 acquisition. Other sources of data include the City's planimetric GIS database (building footprints and road casing polygons). The land cover classification was performed using automated object-based image analysis (OBIA) techniques in Definiens Developer/eCognition Server. No accuracy assessment was conducted, but the dataset was thoroughly reviewed at a scale of 1:2000. Over 370 corrections were made to the classification.

    Description

This dataset consists of several measures of landscape characteristics, each of which is summarized from raster data within spatial polygons. These spatial polygons represent the land area upstream of sampled stream reaches. These stream reaches were sampled by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources for the Maryland Biological Stream Survey program during survey rounds one, two, and four. Landscape characteristics summarized here are either represented by continuous or discrete raster layers which are summarized as the average value of a given characteristic (continuous data) or the area occupied by each class (discrete data). The continuous datasets summarized included percentage of area occupied by tree canopy (for the years 2011 and 2016) and urban land cover (for the years 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016); the percentage of the surficial geology made up of various chemical constituents (including aluminum oxide, calcium oxide, ferric oxide, potassium oxide, magnesium oxide, sodium oxide, nitrogen, phosphorus pentoxide, silicon dioxide, and sulfur); surficial geology physical characteristics (including hydraulic conductivity and uniaxial compressive strength); top soil characteristics (percentage of layer made up of clay, sand, and silt as well as soil K-factor/soil erodibility); topographic conditions (including elevation and topographic wetness index); annual and monthly climate conditions for the years 1994-1997,1999-2004, and 2013-2018 (average air temperature and total precipitation). The discrete datasets summarized included land cover classifications for the years 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2016; land cover change index values for the period between 2001 and 2016.

    Description

The objective of the International Satellite Land Surface Climatology Project (ISLSCP II) study that produced this data set, ISLSCP II University of Maryland Global Land Cover Classifications 1992-1993, was to create a land cover map derived from 1 kilometer Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) data using all available bands, derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and a full year of data (April 1992-March 1993). This thematic map was resampled to 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 degree grids. During this re-processing, the original University of Maryland (UMD) land cover type and fraction maps were adjusted to match the water/land fraction of the ISLSCP II land/water mask. These maps were generated for use by modelers of global biogeochemical cycles and others in need of an internally consistent, global depiction of land cover. This 1km map was also one of the Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) at-launch land cover maps. This product describes the geographic distributions of 13 classes of vegetation cover (plus water and unclassified classes) based on a modified International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) legend. The data set also provides the fraction of each of the 15 classes within the coarser resolution cells, at three spatial resolutions of 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 degrees in latitude and longitude.

    Description

The objective of this study was to create a land cover map derived from 1 kilometer AVHRR data using all available bands and derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and a full year of data (April 1992-March 1993). This thematic map was resampled to 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 degree grids for ISLSCP II. This 1km map was also one of the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) at-launch land cover maps. The data set describes the geographic distributions of 13 classes of vegetation cover (plus water and unclassified classes) based on a modified International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) legend. The data set also provides the fraction of each of the 15 classes within the coarser resolution cells. The data set is provided at three spatial resolutions of 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 degrees in latitude and longitude. We refer the reader to the reference below for more information on data processing of the original 1km data set.

    Description

2002 Anderson Level 2 land use/ land cover classification for Carroll County. Initially developed using high altitude aerial photography and satellite imagery. For 2002, land cover types were updated using 2002 aerial photography for Central Maryland. Urban land use categories were further refined using parcel information from the 2002 Edition of MDPropertyView. The minimum mapping unit for this dataset is 10 acres, the resolution is 1:63,360. This is part of a collection of 221 Baltimore Ecosystem Study metadata records that point to a geodatabase. The geodatabase is available online and is considerably large. Upon request, and under certain arrangements, it can be shipped on media, such as a usb hard drive. The geodatabase is roughly 51.4 Gb in size, consisting of 4,914 files in 160 folders. Although this metadata record and the others like it are not rich with attributes, it is nonetheless made available because the data that it represents could be indeed useful. Description

Anne Arundel County, Maryland is interested in monitoring its changing land cover for planning, zoning and environmental protection purposes. The county is under increasing development pressure and needs to maintain an accurate land cover database so it may guide development in a sustainable way from both economic and environmental perspectives. The land cover layer was designed and built as a continuation of hand-digitized layers compiled in the 1990s. The current 2023 layer was completed using primarily automated methods and high-resolution aerial imagery (3 inch resolution, leaf-off), as a comparison for cost and accuracy to the earlier automated and manually-produced datasets. This version was updated in 2023 using 4-band aerial imagery collected in the spring of 2023 by the State of Maryland.

    Description

This dataset contains digitized land use/land cover (LULC) polygons for years between 1998 and 2013 for six watersheds within and near the Clarksburg Special Protection Area located in Montgomery County, Maryland, USA. Each polygon is representative of the LULC for a specific year within 500-foot buffered watersheds. Watershed boundaries for Cabin Branch (CB), Crystal Rock (CR), Soper Branch (SB), Tributary 104 (T104), and Tributary 109 (T109) were derived using USGS topographic maps while Ten Mile Creek (TMC) was derived using Montgomery County, Maryland LiDAR data. The Habitat Digitizer Extension add-in from NOAA for ArcMap was used to customize a hierarchical classification scheme to attribute polygons delineated by visually interpreting aerial imagery and orthoimagery taken during tree leaf-off season.

    Description

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release includes geospatial datasets that were created for the analysis of Virginia and Maryland Atlantic coastal wetland changes over time. Wetland change was determined by assessing two metrics: wetland persistence and land-cover switching. Because seasonal water levels, beach width, and vegetation differences can affect change analyses, only images acquired during the spring (March, April, and May) were included in the wetland-change metrics (N=10). Land-cover switching was evaluated using Landsat images for successive spring image-acquisition dates: 1985–1989, 1989–1994, 1994–1999, 1999–2004, 2004-2009, 2009-2011, 2011-2013, 2013-2014, and 2014-2015. To evaluate land-cover switching, land-cover types defined by Bernier and others (2015) were reclassified as 1 (water), 3 (wetland), or 7 (non-wetland). These values were chosen so the results of subtracting two dates will create unique values for each scenario. For example, if a cell in 1994 is classified as land and in 1989 was wetland, the result (1994-1989 or 7-3) is 4. If the cell in 1994 is wetland and in 1989 was water (3-1) the result is 2. With this analysis, each two-date combination results in a raster that identifies wetland-land-water conversions, such that water-to-land is -6, wetland-to-land is -4, water-to-wetland is -2, wetland-to-water equals 2, land-to-wetland is 4, and land-to-water is 6.
