    Description

In undertaking this data collection, the principal investigators sought to determine (1) whether police enforcement against drug crimes, specifically heroin crimes, had any influence on the rates of nondrug crimes, and (2) what effect intensive law enforcement programs against drug dealers had on residents where those programs were operating. To achieve these objectives, data on crime rates for seven successive years were collected from police records of 30 cities in Massachusetts. Data were collected for the following offenses: murder, rape, robbery, assault, larceny, and automobile theft. The investigators also interviewed a sample of residents from 3 of those 30 cities. Residents were queried about their opinions of the most serious problem facing people today, their degree of concern about being victims of crime, and their opinions of the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies in handling drug problems.

    Description

As of September 2024, California had the most mass shootings in the United States, with 26 total shootings since 1982. The source defines a mass shooting as a shooting where three or more people were killed. Recently, a mass shooting occurred in the state of Maine on October 26, 2023, during which one of the highest number of fatalities from a mass shooting was recorded after Robert Card opened fire in a bowling alley and a bar, killing 18 and injuring 13 others. Firearms in the U.S. Mass shootings in the United States are disturbingly common. In comparison with other Western countries, there are significantly more shootings in the U.S., which some theorize is due to the relatively lax gun control laws. Gun control laws in the U.S. are dependent on the state, and the right to own a firearm is enshrined in the United States Constitution. Mass shootings The worst mass shooting in the U.S. was the Las Vegas Strip massacre in 2017, which resulted in 58 deaths and 546 injuries. 13 of the worst mass shootings in the United States have occurred since 2015 and the vast majority of these incidents in the U.S. have been carried out by shooters who are White and male.

In 2023, the District of Columbia had the highest reported violent crime rate in the United States, with 1,150.9 violent crimes per 100,000 of the population. Maine had the lowest reported violent crime rate, with 102.5 offenses per 100,000 of the population. Life in the District The District of Columbia has seen a fluctuating population over the past few decades. Its population decreased throughout the 1990s, when its crime rate was at its peak, but has been steadily recovering since then. While unemployment in the District has also been falling, it still has had a high poverty rate in recent years. The gentrification of certain areas within Washington, D.C. over the past few years has made the contrast between rich and poor even greater and is also pushing crime out into the Maryland and Virginia suburbs around the District. Law enforcement in the U.S. Crime in the U.S. is trending downwards compared to years past, despite Americans feeling that crime is a problem in their country. In addition, the number of full-time law enforcement officers in the U.S. has increased recently, who, in keeping with the lower rate of crime, have also made fewer arrests than in years past.

    Description

The global forensic science equipment market is experiencing robust growth, driven by increasing crime rates, advancements in forensic techniques, and rising government investments in law enforcement and criminal justice systems. The market, estimated at $2.5 billion in 2025, is projected to exhibit a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 7% from 2025 to 2033, reaching approximately $4.2 billion by the end of the forecast period. This growth is fueled by the adoption of sophisticated technologies like DNA analysis equipment, mass spectrometry, and digital forensic tools, which enhance the accuracy and speed of investigations. Furthermore, the increasing focus on combating terrorism and cybercrime is significantly bolstering demand for specialized forensic equipment. The market is segmented by equipment type (DNA analysis, chromatography, spectroscopy, microscopy, and others), application (DNA profiling, ballistics, toxicology, digital forensics, and others), and end-user (government agencies, private forensic laboratories, and research institutions). Competition is intense, with established players like Thermo Fisher Scientific, Agilent Technologies, and Bruker dominating the market, but smaller companies specializing in niche technologies are also making inroads. The growth trajectory is likely to be influenced by several factors. Stringent regulations and standards related to forensic evidence handling and analysis are expected to drive adoption of advanced equipment. However, the high cost of equipment, particularly advanced technologies, might hinder market expansion in some regions. Furthermore, the need for skilled professionals to operate and interpret data from this advanced equipment represents a potential bottleneck. Overcoming this challenge through robust training programs and continued investment in education and research will be crucial for sustainable growth within the sector. Future growth will also be impacted by technological advancements in areas such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, which are poised to further automate and improve forensic analysis. The integration of these technologies into existing equipment and workflows will continue to be a key driver of market expansion.

Nigeria is the fifth country in sub-Saharan Africa at risk of genocide. Worldwide, Nigeria ranked 12th as of 2024. The risk percentage of mass killing stood at 3.2 percent, dropping from 7.9 percent in the preceding year. Many different forms of violence and conflicts are often ongoing in Nigeria, mainly in the North due to the rooted presence of Boko Haram. In addition, different armed groups are operating in the country, like those in the Niger Delta and South-East Zone. Nevertheless, the source does not consider violence caused by those running conflicts and separatist movements as criteria for mass killings. Despite the high number of deaths caused by terrorism, these groups do not act against a particular group of civilians. According to the source, Nigeria's high position in the ranking is determined by criteria which include its large population of over 200 million people, its high child mortality rate, the ongoing battle-related deaths, the country's history of mass killing, and its degree of ethnic fractionalization.

    Description

We investigate the effects of job displacement, as a result of mass-layoffs, on criminal arrests using a matched employer-employee-crime dataset from Medell\'in, Colombia. Job displacement leads to immediate and persistent earnings losses, and higher probability of arrest for both the displaced worker and family members. Leveraging a banking policy-reform, we find that greater access to credit attenuates the criminal response to job loss. Impacts on arrests are pronounced for property crimes and among younger men for whom opportunities in criminal enterprises are prevalent. Taken together, our results are consistent with economic incentives contributing to criminal participation decisions after job losses.

    Description

These data were collected to evaluate the Elder Protection Project in Massachusetts, sponsored by the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office and funded by the Massachusetts Committee on Criminal Justice. The mission of the project was to train police officers to be aware of the changing demographics of the elderly population in Massachusetts and to communicate effectively and sensitively with senior adults so that officers could effectively intervene, report, and investigate instances of elder victimization, neglect, and financial exploitation. These data examine the quality of instruction given at the advanced training sessions conducted between September 1993 and May 1994 and offered in all regions of the state in coordination with local protective service agencies. Variables include the respondent's agency and job title, type of elder abuse programs offered by the agency, the respondent's estimate of the percentage of actual elder abuse reported in his/her area, and the respondent's opinion on the greatest obstacles to having elder abuse reported. Respondents rated their knowledge of elder abuse reporting laws, procedures for responding to elder abuse incidents, unique aspects of communicating with elderly people, and formal training on recognizing signs of elder abuse. Respondents that completed the two-day advanced law enforcement elder abuse training program rated the quality of the training and were also asked about issues related to elder abuse not covered in the training, names of new programs in the department or agency initiated as a result of the training, aspects of the training most useful and least useful, and suggestions regarding how the training program could be improved.

Snapshot img { margin: 10px !important; } Outlook of the global mass transit security market

Technavio’s market research analyst predicts the global mass transit security market to grow steadily at a CAGR of around 9% by 2021. One of the major drivers responsible for this growth is the increasing need for public safety. A constant rise in the crime rate and an ever-increasing number of criminal attacks has raised awareness of security among local and federal governments. For instance, in August 2015, a heavily armed man attacked commuters on a train in France. Such terror attacks are increasing worldwide, and corrective methods are being taken especially in mass transit locations such as bus stops, railway stations, airports, and marine ports. Since catastrophic attacks can lead to irreparable losses, transit security systems are helpful in monitoring and scanning people and their luggage. Also law enforcement agents are expected to take precautionary measures to avoid such incidences.

The rising number of terrorist attacks has led to an increase in the demand for chip-embedded passports, also known as e-passports. With the rising number of cross-border travelers, the need for a better passport authentication method has become a priority for authorities across the globe. E-passports are embedded with smart chips that generate a unique code for the identification of the user. These codes are difficult to decode or forge, making e-passports more reliable than traditional paper booklets. The adoption of e-passports is rapidly increasing in European countries such as Finland, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Poland, Greece, and Macedonia.

    Competitive landscape and key vendors

The mass transit security systems market is highly fragmented due to the presence of many small and large vendors. As the market is gaining traction and is expected to grow over the forecast period, many new players are entering the market. To survive this intensely competitive environment, it has become imperative for vendors to distinguish their products and services offered, through clear and unique value propositions. The market is expected to see intensified competition with an increase in product/service extensions, technological innovations, and mergers and acquisitions. Competition in this market is expected to intensify during the forecast period with the increase in development of new technologies and product lines.

Leading vendors in the market are -

    Axis Communications
    Bosch Security Systems
    NICE Systems (Qognify)
    Panasonic
    Tyco

The other prominent vendors in the mass transit security market include AngelTrax, Cisco Systems, Fortem, Genetec, Hikvision Digital Technology, IndigoVision, Intergraph, Kratos Defense and Security Solutions, and Teleste.

Segmentation by components and analysis of the mass transit security market

    Access Control
    Surveillance
    Infrastructure Security

During 2016, the infrastructure security segment dominated the mass transit security market and accounted for a major part of the overall market share. The rise in the number of criminal activities, theft, and unauthorized access to secure areas, has increased the threat to infrastructures across the globe. Moreover, the rising number of infrastructure attacks have drastically increased the awareness of people for infrastructure security; this increasing awareness level has given rise to the rapid adoption of infrastructure security systems worldwide.

Geographical segmentation and analysis of the X-band radar market

    Americas
    APAC
    EMEA

In this market study, analysts have estimated, the Americas are dominating the global mass transit security market during 2017. Since the 9/11 attack in 2001, the US authorities have taken precautionary measures to implement security systems to defend against possible terrorist attacks on parts of the ground transportation systems including subways, railroad trains, and bridges. The transportation sector is the most vulnerable to various types of threats, as millions of people in the US use mass transit systems every day and there is no fixed way to protect buses and trains from terror attacks.

As of 2025, Mississippi was the state with the highest gun violence rate per 100,000 residents in the United States, at **** percent, followed by Louisiana, at **** percent. In comparison, Massachusetts had a gun violence rate of *** percent, the lowest out of all the states. The importance of gun laws Gun laws in the United States vary from state to state, which has been found to affect the differing rates of gun violence throughout the country. Fewer people die by gun violence in states where gun safety laws have been passed, while gun violence rates remain high in states where gun usage is easily permitted and even encouraged. In addition, some states suffer from high rates of gun violence despite having strong gun safety laws due to gun trafficking, as traffickers can distribute firearms illegally past state lines. The right to bear arms Despite evidence from other countries demonstrating that strict gun control measures reduce rates of gun violence, the United States has remained reluctant to enact gun control laws. This can largely be attributed to the Second Amendment of the Constitution, which states that citizens have the right to bear arms. Consequently, gun control has become a highly partisan issue in the U.S., with ** percent of Democrats believing that it was more important to limit gun ownership while ** percent of Republicans felt that it was more important to protect the right of Americans to own guns.

    Description

California led the way in gun safety in the United States as of January 2025, with a composite score of 90.5 based on the presence of 50 key gun safety policies. Massachusetts followed, with a score of 86.5, while Illinois rounded out the top three with a score of 85.5. Illinois joins the no-assault weapons club In 2023, Illinois came in seventh place for gun law strength; by 2024, this ranking rose to third, signifying that the state holds some of the strongest gun safety laws nationwide. However, this swift rise up the ranks also suggests that Illinois is still taking action against gun violence, particularly after seven people were killed and dozens were injured in a mass shooting in Chicago during a Fourth of July parade in 2022. In recent years, Illinois has consistently improved state legislation on gun safety and has enacted multiple measures to prevent further harm from firearms, including a statewide ban on assault weapons which was approved in January 2023. The Midwestern state joined eight other states, as well as Washington, D.C., which prohibits military-style weapons. Permissive open carry states dominate the bottom of the class Receiving less than five points each, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Idaho represent the lowest composite score for gun law strength nationwide. Arkansas, Mississippi, and Idaho are among the 25 U.S. states that do not require any permit to carry concealed guns in public, and are permissive open carry states as well. Moreover, these states do not require a permit or a background check to purchase a handgun and also neglect to necessitate any firearm safety training before making the purchase. Such gun safety laws are considered crucial to ensure that firearms are handled properly and do not cause anyone harm. However, it is also important to note that countries with strong safety measures may still experience high rates of gun violence due to illegal gun trafficking. As a result, taking legal action may not fully address all gun-related violence in the area, especially if there remains an illicit way for people to obtain a gun without restriction.
