The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. Economic places used to tabulate Economic Census data vary from places used to tabulate data from the decennial census, the American Community Survey and other demographic surveys. In addition to incorporated places and census designated places (CDPs), economic places include, minor civil divisions (MCDs) in the twelve strong MCD states, and balances of MCDs or counties. An incorporated place, CDP, MCD, or balance of MCD qualifies as an economic place if it contains 2,500 or more people according to the 2010 Decennial Census, or 2,500 or more jobs according to data from the 2006-2010 5-year ACS period estimates, or is a new or significantly revised place since the 2010 Census and has an estimated population of 2,500 or greater. The Economic Census place boundaries are as of January 1, 2012.

    Measurement technique
The data presented in this dataset is derived from the latest U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 2017-2021 5-Year Estimates. To portray the median household income within each racial category idetified by the US Census Bureau, we conducted an initial analysis and categorization of the data. Subsequently, we adjusted these figures for inflation using the Consumer Price Index retroactive series via current methods (R-CPI-U-RS). It is important to note that the median household income estimates exclusively represent the identified racial categories and do not incorporate any ethnicity classifications. Households are categorized, and median incomes are reported based on the self-identified race of the head of the household. For additional information about these estimations, please contact us via email at research@neilsberg.com

    Description

Commercial fishery interests and other extractive industries typically dominate discussions for environmental decision-making for the oceans and coasts. These industries can claim millions of dollars in benefits to local communities by simply adding up their sales. But there are lots of other coastal activities with less visible economic impacts. How can the economic benefits of marine stewardship and conservation activities be estimated? The authors used donations to coastal and marine civil society organizations, and volunteer efforts, to provide a conservative estimate of the economic benefits provided to the state.
