In 2010, the Census Bureau used the Census Block Group data to designate the urban boundaries by following the Census Bureau maintained road segments called TIGER. The Office of Transportation Planning, in cooperation with the regional planning agencies, adjusted the boundaries to follow the Road Inventory street segments, municipal boundaries, railroads, or water bodies. This polygon datalayer represents the final version of the adjusted urban boundaries, which is used to determine the Road Inventory official roadway functional classification.ProductionThe urban boundaries were digitized with the aid of 1:5000 road inventory, rail lines, streams, and MassGIS survey-level town boundariesStatusThis data is current as of 2013.

    Description

This layer is the most accurate representation of Massachusetts' municipal (city and town) boundaries; this representation is based on the legislatively approved record of municipal boundaries.

This political boundary datalayer has been created from latitude and longitude coordinates found in the 68-volume Harbor and Lands Commission Town Boundary Atlas. This Atlas series, and updates since it was published, describes the legal boundary for each of the 351 municipalities in Massachusetts. These coordinates were recorded from surveys of the location of each boundary marker around the periphery of each community. Each survey was tied into higher order monumented survey control points. The Atlases also include detailed descriptions of each community's boundary and location maps for each of the original boundary marker locations. The original surveys were conducted in the 1890s. The Atlas series was published in the early 1900s and has since been updated by the Survey Section of the Massachusetts Highway Department (now The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) - Highway Division) with changes as they are approved by the legislature.

This hosted feature layer, with "Enable Sync" set, contains multi-part polygons representing inland and offshore areas, with one feature for each of the state's 351 municipalities.

    Description

The 2016 Massachusetts Small MS4 General Permit requires that Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems (MS4s) be mapped. With MS4s interconnected across properties, maps are developed by different organizations which makes it difficult to determine where stormwater runoff is collecting and how stormwater infrastructure is managed. Through interviews and geospatial data analysis, we developed recommendations for facilitating the collaboration and integration of geospatial data between Central Massachusetts Regional Stormwater Coalition communities and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

A TDI District is a geographic area that is a contiguous neighborhood, characterized by a primary land use (e.g. downtown main street, residential, light industrial) but defined by a walkable, dense, mixed-use physical environment (five-minute walking radius) framed by recent public or private investments. The TDI District includes "hinge" areas identified by the TDI Partnerships (e.g. blocks, intersections, gateways) that have had flat activity or blight, and/or sites and buildings that are underutilized despite proximate investments. The goal of the program is to concentrate resources, efforts, and investments in a ompact area in order to create a critical mass of activity, build momentum, and inspire additional investments by neighboring landowners, local entrepreneurs, and businesses that will lead to additional private development. "TDI Districts in Development" are the 10 TDI Districts selected by MassDevelopment’s short-listing process during an open competition for all Gateway Cities in October-December 2014. Called the Call for TDI Districts, this process provided MassDevelopment with a 'Needs Assessment' for all 26 Gateway Cities. This information was used by the TDI Team to develop specific and tailored scopes of work for the 10 Districts in Development, as well as technical assistance workshops. The 10 Districts in Development are receiving:Enhanced MassDevelopment supportCustomized technical assistance to complement prior planning/assistance work and catalyze further redevelopmentFirst priority for potential TDI Equity InvestmentsThree of these districts have received TDI FellowsMassDevelopment will continue to support redevelopment activities in other areas of Gateway Cities through its other programs and will continue to support redevelopment activities throughout the Commonwealth.(Description from http://www.massdevelopment.com/what-we-offer/key-initiatives/gateway-cities/)

    Description

2020 Census tracts are small, relatively permanent statistical subdivisions of a county or equivalent entity, and are reviewed and updated by local participants prior to each decennial census as part of the Census Bureau’s Participant Statistical Areas Program (PSAP). The primary purpose of census tracts is to provide a stable set of geographic units for the presentation of decennial census data.Census tracts generally have a total population size between 1,200 and 8,000 people with an optimum size of 4,000 people. The spatial size of census tracts varies widely depending on the density of settlement. Ideally, census tract boundaries remain stable over time to facilitate statistical comparisons from census to census. However, physical changes in street patterns caused by highway construction, new development, and so forth, may require boundary revisions. In addition, significant changes in population may result in splitting or combining census tracts. State and county boundaries always are census tract boundaries in the standard census geographic hierarchy, but tracts can cross the same kinds of boundaries that block groups can. Census tract numbers have up to a 4-character basic number and may have an optional 2-character suffix. The census tract numbers (used as names) eliminate any leading zeroes and append a suffix only if required. The 6-digit census tract codes, however, include leading zeroes and have an implied decimal point for the suffix. Census tract codes (000100 to 998999) are unique within a county or equivalent area.
