TwitterThis dataset is a map of land use and vegetation for the Island of Maui, Hawaii, circa 2010. This dataset is a modified version of the U.S. Geological Survey LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation Type map (LANDFIRE.HI_110EVT, Refresh 2008) for the Island of Maui, Hawaii. The LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation Type map was modified to create this map of land use and vegetation for use in a water-budget model. Modifications included converting the LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation Type map from a raster to a shapefile format, assigning land-use names, and adding golf-course and crop boundaries.

TwitterThis dataset describes land cover and vegetation for the island of Maui, Hawaii, 2017, hereinafter the 2017 land-cover map. The 2017 land-cover map is a modified version of the 2010 land-cover map included in the geospatial dataset titled "Mean annual water-budget components for the Island of Maui, Hawaii, for average climate conditions, 1978-2007 rainfall and 2010 land cover (version 2.0)" by Johnson (2017). The 2010 land-cover map was generated by intersecting (merging) multiple spatial datasets that characterize the spatial distribution of rainfall, cloud-water (or fog) interception, irrigation, reference evapotranspiration, direct runoff, soil type, and land cover. Land-cover designations in the 2010 land-cover map were derived mainly from the U.S. Geological Survey LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation Type map (LANDFIRE.HI_110EVT, Refresh 2008) for the island of Maui. The 2017 land-cover map retains the merged structure of the 2010 land-cover map but includes modifications mainly related to agricultural land use since the release of the 2010 land-cover map. Modifications to the 2010 land-cover map included updating the land cover and vegetation designations, and the polygon boundaries in the 2010 land-cover map to reflect (1) the cessation of sugarcane cultivation by Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company in December 2016, and (2) the agricultural land-use information described in the Statewide Agricultural Land Use Baseline 2015 map by Melrose and others (2016). These modifications affected about 10 percent of the total area in the 2010 land-cover map. The 2017 land-cover map also distinguishes between (1) forested areas that are within the fog-interception zone, assumed to be at elevations of 2,000 feet and higher on Maui, and (2) forested areas that are below the fog-interception zone. The same distinction was included in the analysis of Johnson and others (2018) and in the spatial structure of the 2010 land-cover map, but was omitted from the land-cover names in the attribute table of the 2010 land-cover map.

TwitterWhile there have been many maps produced that depict vegetation for the state of Hawai‘i only a few of these display land cover for all of the main Hawaiian Islands, and most of those that were created before the year 2000 have very generalized units or are somewhat inaccurate as a result of more recent land use changes or due to poor resolution (both spatial and spectral) in the imagery that was used to produce the map. Some of the more detailed and accurate maps include the Hawai‘i GAP Analysis (HI-GAP) Land Cover map (Gon et al. 2006), the NOAA C-CAP Land Cover map (NOAA National Ocean Service Coastal Services Center 2012), and the more recently released Hawai‘i LANDFIRE EVT Land Cover map (U.S. Geological Survey 2009). However, all of these maps as originally produced were not considered to be detailed enough, current enough, or had other classification issues that would not allow them to be used as the primary base for the Hawai‘i Carbon Assessment. For the Hawai‘i Carbon Assessment we integrated components from several of these previously mentioned land cover and land use mapping efforts and combined them into a single new land cover map (CAH Land Cover) that was further updated using very-high-resolution imagery. The hierarchical classification system of the CAH Land Cover map allows for grouping the mapped units into different configurations, ranging from very detailed plant communities reflecting current conditions to very generalized major land cover units and biomes that represent land use and potential vegetation zones, respectively. The CAH Land Cover classification is hierarchical with forty-eight CAH Detailed Land Cover units which can be grouped into twenty-seven CAH General Land Cover units, thirteen CAH Biome units, and seven CAH Major Land Cover units (Appendix 1). The CAH Detailed Land Cover units generally correspond to the rUSNVC Association level, the CAH General Land Cover units are related to the rUSNVC Group level, and the CAH Biome units connect to the rUSNVC Subclass level.

The USGS through the Land Cover Institute serves as a facilitator for land cover and land use science, applications, and production functions. The institute assists in the availability and technical support of land cover data sets through increasing public and scientific awareness of the importance of land cover science.

TwitterThis data set contains up to nine types of digital elevation data: 1-1 degree blocks, 2-1 degree x 3 degree mosaic of elevation (latitude/longitude coordinate system), 3-1 degree x 3 degree mosaic of slope, 4-1 degree x 3 degree mosaic of aspect (latitude/longitude coordinate system), 5-1 degree x 3 degree mosaic of filtered elevation (5 x 5 filter), 6-1 degree x 3 degree mosaic of elevation (UTM registered), 7-1 degree x 3 degree mosaic of slope (UTM registered), 8-1 degree x 3 degree mosaic of aspect (UTM registered), 9-1 degree x 3 degree mosaic of shaded relief (latitude/longitude coordinate system). Data coverage is from 1982 to present with work ongoing. Data source is 1:250,000 scale Defense Mapping Agency Digital Terrain Series. The data set currently contains 966 records with estimated growth of 5-15 records per year. Storage required varies by selection on area size. Data are available on: 9-track, 800 bpi, 1600 bpi, 6250 bpi, unlabeled, unblocked, or BCD tape. Subsets on the main file and custom formats as well as limited documentation is available.
Data is organized by 7 1/2 ' or 15 ' quads. This data is intended to be used
for land cover analysis, wildlife refuge studies, drainage analysis, and land
use planning.

TwitterThis digital data set of Canada (Northwest Territories) contains land cover classifications derived from Landsat MSS data. It can be keyed on a Canadian 1:250,000 quadrangle basis. Spatial referencing is by 50 meter grid cells. The data source is Landsat MSS data (no DEM data contained). There are 5 records and storage of them varies by storage required and storage medium and selected area. The file structure is sequential. Data are available on: 9-track, 800 bpi, 1600 bpi, 6250 bpi, unlabeled, unblocked, BCD, fixed record length tape and 8' floppy disk. Subsets and custom formats are available; limited documentation is also available. The data is organized by 7 1/2 ' or 15 ' quads. General area covered: Northwest Territories in Canada.

TwitterA vegetation/land cover raster digital data set for the entire National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska (NPR-A) was generated from Landsat multispectral data sets. Included are eleven categories of vegetation and land cover which are derived from all or portions of 10 Landsat MSS scenes. The data set covers all or part of thirteen 1:250,000-scale topographic quadrangles. Data are stored in 50 meter pixels and registered to a UTM base. A full NPR-A mosaic as well as the 1:250,000 topographic series. Data are available in two forms: a digital mosaic of (1) the entire NPR-A coverage, split into two pieces each and registered to a separate UTM zone, or (2) for each 1:250,000-scale topo quadrangle area within the NPR-A. This file is too large to remain online. It is stored on magnetic tape at Moffett Field, CA.
