Context
The dataset tabulates the Maui County population over the last 20 plus years. It lists the population for each year, along with the year on year change in population, as well as the change in percentage terms for each year. The dataset can be utilized to understand the population change of Maui County across the last two decades. For example, using this dataset, we can identify if the population is declining or increasing. If there is a change, when the population peaked, or if it is still growing and has not reached its peak. We can also compare the trend with the overall trend of United States population over the same period of time.
Key observations
In 2023, the population of Maui County was 164,183, a 0.11% decrease year-by-year from 2022. Previously, in 2022, Maui County population was 164,359, a decline of 0.27% compared to a population of 164,797 in 2021. Over the last 20 plus years, between 2000 and 2023, population of Maui County increased by 35,390. In this period, the peak population was 167,682 in the year 2019. The numbers suggest that the population has already reached its peak and is showing a trend of decline. Source: U.S. Census Bureau Population Estimates Program (PEP).

Genetic diversity levels, effective population size estimates, and population structure of the endangered Hawaiian hoary bat (Lasiurus semotus, also known as Aeorestes semotus) were examined across the islands of Hawai‘i, Maui, O‘ahu, and Kaua‘i using eighteen nuclear microsatellite loci and one mitochondrial gene from 339 individuals collected between 1988 and 2020. The study extracted DNA for population genetic analyses from tissue samples, collected from live bats captured as part of ongoing field studies or under rehabilitation care, from bat carcasses collected by local federal and state wildlife agencies and wind energy facilities, and from dried skin specimens at the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum. A region of the mitochondrial CO1 gene was sequenced in 321 individuals and eighteen nuclear microsatellite loci were amplified from 298 individuals. This data release contains three data files: (1) microsatellite allele fragment size data, (2) mitochondrial DNA CO1 sequences, and ...

The dataset presents the median household income across different racial categories in Maui County. It portrays the median household income of the head of household across racial categories (excluding ethnicity) as identified by the Census Bureau. The dataset can be utilized to gain insights into economic disparities and trends and explore the variations in median houshold income for diverse racial categories.
Key observations
Based on our analysis of the distribution of Maui County population by race & ethnicity, the population is predominantly White. This particular racial category constitutes the majority, accounting for 30.98% of the total residents in Maui County. Notably, the median household income for White households is $92,016. Interestingly, despite the White population being the most populous, it is worth noting that Black or African American households actually reports the highest median household income, with a median income of $160,876. This reveals that, while Whites may be the most numerous in Maui County, Black or African American households experience greater economic prosperity in terms of median household income.

The TIGER/Line shapefiles and related database files (.dbf) are an extract of selected geographic and cartographic information from the U.S. Census Bureau's Master Address File / Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (MAF/TIGER) Database (MTDB). The MTDB represents a seamless national file with no overlaps or gaps between parts, however, each TIGER/Line shapefile is designed to stand alone as an independent data set, or they can be combined to cover the entire nation. The Feature Names Relationship File (FEATNAMES.dbf) contains a record for each feature name and any attributes associated with it. Each feature name can be linked to the corresponding edges that make up that feature in the All Lines Shapefile (EDGES.shp), where applicable to the corresponding address range or ranges in the Address Ranges Relationship File (ADDR.dbf), or to both files. Although this file includes feature names for all linear features, not just road features, the primary purpose of this relationship file is to identify all street names associated with each address range. An edge can have several feature names; an address range located on an edge can be associated with one or any combination of the available feature names (an address range can be linked to multiple feature names). The address range is identified by the address range identifier (ARID) attribute, which can be used to link to the Address Ranges Relationship File (ADDR.dbf). The linear feature is identified by the linear feature identifier (LINEARID) attribute, which can be used to relate the address range back to the name attributes of the feature in the Feature Names Relationship File or to the feature record in the Primary Roads, Primary and Secondary Roads, or All Roads Shapefiles. The edge to which a feature name applies can be determined by linking the feature name record to the All Lines Shapefile (EDGES.shp) using the permanent edge identifier (TLID) attribute. The address range identifier(s) (ARID) for a specific linear feature can be found by using the linear feature identifier (LINEARID) from the Feature Names Relationship File (FEATNAMES.dbf) through the Address Range / Feature Name Relationship File (ADDRFN.dbf).
Face refers to the areal (polygon) topological primitives that make up MTDB. A face is bounded by one or more edges; its boundary includes only the edges that separate it from other faces, not any interior edges contained within the area of the face. The Topological Faces Shapefile contains the attributes of each topological primitive face. Each face has a unique topological face identifier (TFID) value. Each face in the shapefile includes the key geographic area codes for all geographic areas for which the Census Bureau tabulates data for both the 2020 Census and the annual estimates and surveys. The geometries of each of these geographic areas can then be built by dissolving the face geometries on the appropriate key geographic area codes in the Topological Faces Shapefile.
